Banned Books Week 2013
Banned Books Week 2013
Banned Books Week 2013 is celebrating more than thirty years of the freedom to read. This freedom, not only to choose what we read, but also to select from a full array of possibilities, is firmly rooted in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Although we enjoy an increasing quantity and availability of information and reading material, we must remain vigilant to ensure that access to this material is preserved; would-be censors who continue to threaten the freedom to read come from all quarters and all political persuasions. Even if well intentioned, censors try to limit the freedom of others to choose what they read, see, or hear. Sex, profanity, and racism remain the primary categories of objections, and most occur in schools and school libraries. Frequently, challenges are motivated by the desire to protect children. While the intent is commendable, this method of protection contains hazards far greater than exposure to the "evil" against which it is leveled. U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, in Texas v. Johnson, said, "If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable." Individuals may restrict what they themselves or their children read, but they must not call on governmental or public agencies to prevent others from reading or viewing that material. Censored and Banned Books: From John Steinbeck to Dr. Seuss
Censored and Banned Books: From John Steinbeck to Dr. Seuss
See our list of the most notorious book here: http://www.abebooks.com/books/controversial-banned-sensational-outrage/notorious-books.shtml The notion of banning books is both silly and rather scary. Books have been suppressed throughout the history of publishing. It's not a phenomenon limited to modern times. Hardly a week goes by without somebody challenging a book's place inside a school or a library. In 1931, China banned Alice's Adventures in Wonderland because "Animals should not use human language." Of Mice and Men was challenged in the 1950s because some people thought it would encourage euthanasia and also because it contains gritty realistic language such as God damn. To Kill A Mockingbird has upset people since the 1960s because it contains the N word. In 1989, a school district in California banned The Lorax by Dr. Seuss because it "criminalizes the foresting industry." The Harry Potter books have been banned time and again since 1996 for encouraging witchcraft. And Tango Makes Three -- a children's book about two male penguins who are given an egg to hatch -- has been banned many times since 2005 because people think it encourages homosexuality among young readers. In fact, the list of banned books annually supplied by American Library Association makes for a fantastic reading list. Many of these classic books are studied in schools and universities, and have defined modern literature. The most common reasons behind a book being banned are race, blasphemy, sex, violence, witchcraft or Satanism and political bias -- all of which are pretty interesting subjects for writers and readers. One aspect of banning anything is that it generates publicity -- and that usually helps sales. In 1985, the British government banned a tell-all memoir called Spycatcher from a former MI5 agent. The book was incredibly dull but its notoriety turned it into a bestseller. In fact, banning rarely works. Readers always find a way. What do you think of book banning? Leave your comments below. Bookmans Does Banned Books (2013)
Combining passages from challenged books read by customers and employees, this video expresses our concern about censorship. Not all inhibitors to free speech are as sensational as book banning. Censorship can be stealthy. It creeps into our lives without us recognizing what is free and what has been redacted. Special thanks to morgantj for use of the song "Silent Motions."
