South Sudan's short-lived moment of hope
Hope For The Future: As South Sudan tumbles into another crisis, this short-lived moment of hope becomes even more heartbreaking. For more information and downloads visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=56282 Darfur may dominate the headlines but in Southern Sudan, the story is more positive. After a 21 year civil war, peace seems to be returning to the region and refugees are coming home. The peace deal agreed between the SPLA and government gives the South greater autonomy. Now, millions of displaced people are returning. "They're our people. They have a right to be here," reasons Vice President of Southern Sudan, Dr Machar. But tensions between the North and South still abound. According to the agreement, the South was supposed to receive 50% of all oil revenues. But some claim this is not happening. "We have received very little revenue", states Machar. Militias, allegedly armed by the government, are still creating terror in the South. Despite this, people like Martha are optimistic. "I'm very happy because I've come home." ABC Australia: Ref-3071 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. There is international concern that South Sudan - formed in 2011 when it declared independence from the north - could be on the verge of a civil war. Gerard Araud, France's Ambassador to the UN, told reporters: "You have a political crisis and you have a powder keg, which is the ethnic question. So the political crisis could lead to a general political civil war if we don't solve very quickly the political crisis through dialogue." The UN says hundreds of people have been killed since violence erupted last week - when the South Sudanese President Salva Kiir accused his ex-deputy of a failed coup. South Sudan's permanent war: the longest conflict in Africa
The Longest War: Sudan's civil war raged for over two decades. This film gives incredible insight into its bloody and violent history. For more information and downloads visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=56025 This film chronicles Sudan's decades-long civil war, a violent mix of colonial legacies, religious tensions, and new found oil wealth. Sudan's civil war, which raged from the 1980s until a peace deal was brokered in the early 2000s, marks the longest war ever to take place on the African continent. Dr. Hassan al-Turabi, who served as intellectual mentor of the Sudanese regime for much of the war, states that "We have never known slavery," although many in the south claimed that the north launched regular slave raids into their territory. "There were times when the situation seemed quite hopeless," remarks Nhial Deng, former SPLM Secretary of Foreign Affairs, on the fitful negotiations that finally led to a peace treaty in 2005. Persecuted Christians - South Sudan: The plight of the Southern Sudanese Christians living in Northern Sudan For more information and downloads visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=57704 Christians in Northern Sudan face systematic, institutionalised discrimination. Tired of being constantly persecuted, they're hoping to establish their own state in the South. "In the North, we are not allowed to display the crucifix", states nun Hanan Juan. "If we do, the Muslims curse and spit at us". Christians are banned from speaking in their tribal dialects and have difficulty finding work. Rather than remain in Khartoum, thousands of Christians are returning to their destroyed villages in the South. There, at least they can practice their faith freely. UN warns deadly violence spreading to other regions in South Sudan
The UN chief is warning that violence is spreading in South Sudan as fighting between rival army factions continues unabated. Ban Ki-moon says he's deeply concerned about the situation in the country and that the crisis should be dealt with through dialog. Meanwhile, a UN official says at least 19 people are killed in fresh clashes in Bor, the capital of Jonglei state. The army now says it has lost control of the city. Tensions are also rising in other part of the country. South Sudan has been witnessing deadly violence after President Salva Kiir accused former vice president Riek Machar of trying to launch a coup. Machar who was sacked in July has denied the accusations. Based on U-N figures, up to 500 people have been killed and 800 others wounded since the violence broke out on Sunday.- published: 19 Dec 2013
