The famous Bersaglieri cyclists of the Italian Army - 1915
Military bicycles Bianchi and Fiat. The Bersaglieri (Marksmen in English) are a corps of the Italian Army originally created by General Alessandro La Marmora on 18 June 1836 to serve in the Piedmontese Army, later to become the Royal Italian Army. They have always been a high-mobility light infantry unit, and can still be recognized by the distinctive wide brimmed hat that they wear (only in dress uniform in modern times), decorated with black capercaillie feathers. The feathers are usually applied to their combat helmets. Another distinctive trait of the Bersaglieri is the fast jog pace they keep on parades, instead of marching.

Satan's Rhapsody-1915-Nino Oxilia- One of the finest stylish silent movies made in Italy
Satan's Rhapsody (It. "Rapsodia Satanica"), 1915, is a beautiful film directed by Nino Oxilia . Nino Oxilia was born on November 13, 1889 in Turin, Piedmont, Italy as Angelo Agostino Adolfo Oxilia. He was a director and writer, known for Satan's Rhapsody (1920), Addio giovinezza! (1913) and Die Fürstin von Monte Cabello (1914). He died on November 18, 1917 in Monte Grappa, Veneto, Italy, (died before his time during the World War I). This is his most successful oeuvre, a film that belongs to those stylish melodramas made in Italy in the early silent days that gave prestige to the unique style of the film productions of that European country. The film has a romantic atmosphere that fascinates immediately; delicate scenery and careful indoor settings as well as superb cinematography by Giorgio Ricci. Let us not forget that part of the oeuvre was hand-coloured and that fact gives to the film a special sense of decadent and unreal feeling that fits perfectly with the story. Prologue (the best part -- the runtime of the movie is 40 min): The ageing Italian aristocrat, Dame Alba d' Oltrevita ( Dame Lyda Borelli ) would like to find a second youth. Dame Alba discovers a particular and special solution for her beauty problems: a pact with the devil. Mephisto ( Ugo Bazzini ) accepts but in exchange forbids her to fall in love ever, but this it seems doesn't matter to our Italian aristocrat because she is again young and beautiful. Lyda Borelli (22 March 1884 -- 2 June 1959) was an Italian actress of cinema and theatre. She was born in Genoa, and died in Rome. Her career in theatre started when she was a child, acting on stage with Paola Pezzaglia in the french drama I due derelitti. Ugo Bazzini ... Mephisto Giovanni Cini ... Sergio Lyda Borelli ... The Invaders-1912-Francis Ford and Thomas H. Ince-A fine western, a classical silent film
"The Invaders" is a 1912 American silent Western film directed by Francis Ford and Thomas H. Ince. Ince was an American silent film actor, director, screenwriter and producer of more than 100 films and pioneering studio mogul. Known as the "Father of the Western", he invented many mechanisms of professional movie production, introducing early Hollywood to the "assembly line" system of film making. He wrote the screenplay for The Italian (1915), and directed Civilization (1916), both films selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry. He was a partner with D.W. Griffith and Mack Sennett in the Triangle Motion Picture Company, and built his own studios in Culver City, which later became the legendary home of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Ince is also known for his death aboard the yacht of William Randolph Hearst; officially he died of heart trouble, but Hollywood rumor of the time suggested he had been shot by Hearst in a dispute over actress Marion Davies. Francis Ford (born Francis Feeney, August 14, 1881 -- September 5, 1953) was a prolific film actor, writer, and director. He was the mentor and elder brother of film director John Ford. He also appeared in many of John Ford's movies, including Young Mr. Lincoln and The Quiet Man. Ford acted in over 400 films altogether, with many of his early credits poorly-documented and likely lost. Ambitious and prolific, in Ford's early work he cast himself as George Armstrong Custer, Sherlock Holmes (with his younger brother as Dr. Watson), and Abraham Lincoln, a role which he specialized in. By 1912 Ford was directing alongside Thomas Ince. It rapidly became clear that Ince was routinely taking credit for Ford's work, so Ford moved to Universal in early 1913. His 1913 Lucille Love, Girl of Mystery was Universal's first serial, and the first of a string of very popular serials starring Ford's collaborator and lover Grace Cunard. The 1915 serial The Broken Coin was expanded from 15 to 22 episodes by popular demand, probably the height of Ford's career. In 1917 Ford founded a short-lived independent company, Fordart Films, which released the 1918 Berlin via America with Phil Kelly, and briefly opened his own studio at Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street. At the same time Ford mentored his younger brother, collaborating frequently as writers, directors, and actors in each other's projects; but as early as 1917, it was clear that John's star was on the rise. Frank's directorial style remained suitable for serials, but failed to evolve. Ford's final known directoral credit is for the 1928 The Call of the Heart, a 50-minute vehicle for "Dynamite the Devil Dog". The Ford brothers were, at the best of times, critical of each other, and sometimes sharply antagonistic. Ford wrote an unpublished memoir in 1934 called "Up and Down the Ladder" which is "filled with bitter and sometimes heartrending complaints about how old-timers who had helped create the industry had been shunted aside by younger men." From the late 1920s, and for the next two decades, Ford sustained a career as a grizzled character actor and bit player. He is often uncredited, as in his appearance in James Whale's 1931 Frankenstein. Among his most memorable roles was that of the demented old man in The Ox-Bow Incident (1943). Glacier Melt Reveals Corpses of WWI Soldiers
Glacial melting in the Italian Alps continues to uncover the corpses of fallen World War 1 soldiers. Glacial melting in the Italian Alps continues to uncover the corpses of fallen World War 1 soldiers. The troops that are emerging in the northern village of Peio were special forces who fought in the White War, a high-altitude faceoff between the Italians and the Austrians around 1915. Those who fought there were familiar with the area, and in many cases with one another, be they enemies or comrades. Given the extreme mountain weather, specialized weapons and war strategies were developed, but in the end most lives were claimed by the punishing environment itself. In the past several years, evidence of their battles in the form of letters, diaries, and other personal items has been emerging from the ice. More recently, the bodies of those who perished have begun to surface. Many have been found mummified by the ice and have since been moved to proper burial grounds. Along the way they stop at the lab of a forensic anthropologist in Vicenza in hopes that their identities can be discovered. Most often, they end up in unmarked graves. What remains of their legacy, including love letters, machine instructions, and newspaper clippings, is displayed in Peio's war museum.- published: 15 Jan 2014
