Intro to Philosophy: Plato, the Symposium (part 1)
In this class session from my Fall 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we start our study of Plato's master-work, the Symposium. We get as far into it as the first two speeches on Love, by Phaedrus and Pausanius. Prior to that, we examine the meaning of "symposium", discuss how the characters got there and why they are giving speeches about Love, set out the narrative structure of the dialogue, and discuss male-male love relations amongst the Ancient Greeks. The video was recorded on a new camera, and I've not yet got the hang of it, so unfortunately, a portion on the right side of the blackboard is cut off here. All of the audio remains, however, and most of what I put on the chalkboard. Handouts for the class sessions on the Symposium are available on my Academia.edu profile here: http://www.academia.edu/4435051/Platos_Symposium_Handouts- published: 06 Sep 2013

Intro to Philosophy: Plato, the Symposium (part 2)
In this lecture/discussion session from my Fall 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we continue our study of Plato's Symposium, turning our attention now to the middle three speeches -- by Eryximachus (the doctor), Aristophanes (the coming playwright), and Agathon (the tragic playwright and the host of the party). By examining their speeches, we get to explore a physical focused account of Love as harmony between elements, a funny fable that reveals a deep truth about human desire, and a well-constructed rhetorical address essentially identifying Love with the Good and the Beautiful (the Greek kalon kai agathon) Handouts on each of the speeches and the Symposium itself are available in the Teaching Documents section of my Academica.edu profile, here: http://reasonio.academia.edu/GregorySadler/Teaching-Documents- published: 11 Sep 2013

Intro to Philosophy: Plato, the Symposium (part 3)
We finish our 3-session examination of Plato's Symposium by examining the last two speeches, focusing primarily on Socrates' speech -- which turns out not to be a speech at all, but dialectical questioning of Agathon, and recounting a set of dialectical conversations with the philosopher of Love, Diotima. Alcibiades' speech praises not Love, but rather Socrates( who Alcibiades is in love with) and discusses his the difference between his inner character and external appearance. Two key Platonic doctrines about Love are discussed in Socrates' recounted conversations with Diotima -- the ladder of Love, by which we ascend from bodies ultimately to the very source and epitome of beauty itself; and the notion of Love as a desire to bring to birth in the beautiful, and thereby participate in immortality- published: 14 Sep 2013

Ducked and Covered: A Survival Guide to the Post Apocalypse
Ducked and Covered: A Survival Guide to the Post Apocalypse is an instructional public information film designed to assist the general population with surviving life in Australia after a nuclear war. Produced by the Australian Board of Civil Defense during the early 1980s, this previously unseen, dusty print was uncovered deep within a university film archive.
Broken into four chapters, the film guides wary survivors through the trials that will await them in the post apocalypse. From post-apocalyptic fashion and unique uses for surplus human skulls, to becoming a local warlord and avoiding radioactive mutants, there is something for all dwellers of the wastelands. With its dry methodical narration, brooding synthesizer, minimalist animation and erroneous guidance, Ducked and Covered is a dark humored parody/loving homage to the late cold war era, early 1980’s public information films, as well as a reminder… OF WHAT STILL COULD BE.

why the lucky stiff (or _why) is a computer programmer. His best known work may be Why's (poignant) Guide to Ruby, a book which teaches the Ruby programming language with stories; its eclectic style has been compared to a "collaboration between Stanislaw Lem and Edward Lear". Chapter 3 of this Guide was republished in The Best Software Writing I, edited by Joel Spolsky.
Most recently, Why has focused his efforts on the problem of how to better teach programming, and how to make programming more appealing to young people. His latest project, Hackety Hack, is a Ruby-based environment used to teach programming to children. His most vocal critics describe him as "a fledgling freelance professor, should one adhere to the most fraudulent of definitions." His biographical information, matter of point, is riddled with accolades which are clearly either lifted or falsified in order to cast him in a good light -- let's say 40 watts of violet."
