Music educator Richard Gill argues the case for igniting the imagination through music and for making our own music. In this talk, he leads the TEDxSydney audience through some surprising illustrations of the relationship between music and our imagination. Richard Gill has been Music Director of the Victorian Opera Company since its inception in 2006. He has also been Artistic Director of OzOpera, Artistic Director/Chief Conductor of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and Adviser for the Musica Viva in Schools Program. Currently the Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony's Education Program, Richard has frequently conducted for Opera Australia and OzOpera, Meet the Music (SSO), Discovery concerts (Sydney Sinfonia); Ears Wide Open (MSO), and Canberra, Queensland and Tasmanian symphony orchestras. Richard's many accolades include an Order of Australia Medal, the Bernard Heinze Award, an Honorary Doctorate from the Edith Cowan University of Western Australia, Hon. Doc. We invite you to visit us in person, for a concert, recital, rehearsal, or to meet our faculty and students. Music plays a large role in student life at Concordia, as an area of study and a mode of expression. The music curriculum includes courses in music theory and composition, history and literature, church music, music education, vocal and instrumental techniques, conducting, private lessons in voice, piano, organ, harpsichord, guitar and all band and orchestra instruments, plus a full range of ensembles. The faculty includes some of the finest artist-teachers in the Twin Cities. The Buetow Music Center features a 500-seat auditorium; three rehearsal rooms for choir, band, and chamber ensembles; 16 private practice rooms; four organ practice rooms; two electronic MIDI labs, including SMARTMUSIC technology; 16 faculty offices/studios; and a three-manual concert organ designed by Hermann Schlicker.Concordia became an all-Steinway piano school in 2002. The Atken Armenian Foundation (AAF) was created in 2009 soon after the passing of Dr. Atken Armenian - Armenian-Canadian educator, humanitarian and lover of music who spent the last 14 years of his life in Armenia. Our mission is to continue his charitable work in Armenia, the most cherished being to create opportunities for students, families and musicians in need. He helped hundreds of individuals in Armenia and has a permanent place in the memory of many. The Foundation's mission is to establish children's choirs and thus provide musical education to under-privileged children. In the process, we seek to discover, encourage and give financial assistance to exceptional talent in the regions of Armenia. Board members include professional musicians and proven music administrators. Progress is monitored closely and the results already show. Our goal is to set up sustainable / enduring programs in all the regions of Armenia, including Artsakh. Two programs are already running in the Kotayk and Vayots Dzor regions (this video shows the choir from the latter). By hiring professional choir masters - two to date - we provide a music education to whole communities. For this we need long term commitments from donors.
