A quick editorial cartoon about the intersection of self-pity, entitlement, rape, territoriality, misogyny and fear of women. You see it all over the place online in the form of Men's Rights Activists (of whom there are a few reasonable non-misogynists), Men Going Their Own Way, Pick Up Artists, and dudes touting the "Red Pill", because The Matrix is a good movie. Look any of these up if you have the stomach for it. These are extreme examples, but watered-down forms of these ideas are everywhere.
In lurking their blogs and youtube channels for a while, I've noticed that beyond the standard patriarchal chauvinism there is this deep fear of women - what they will do to me, how they will reject me, how they will use me, how they are changing society in a way that does not favor me, how they are making men into something I don't like, how they are making themselves into something I don't like, that they won't give me what I want, and that they won't give me what I think is rightfully mine. This goes beyond fear of feminism- this is fear of women at its purest. And that, to quote a puppet, leads to anger and hate. It's sad.
I am a feminist. I think there's enough ice cream to go around, but it does mean those of us with 3 scoops might have to give one or two up. Also, The Matrix is a fun movie but probably not anything you should be basing a philosophy on.

"Ask First!" was written by J. Mary Burnet & Kaleigh Trace in response to Robin Thicke's gross, unconsensual song and video "Blurred Lines."
Art is powerful and we are in awe of rad artists who write political rhymes. Writing this song and making the video is one of the ways we're doing our best to promote enthusiastic consent and sex positivity in a shitty, heteronormative, patriarchal culture that objectifies women, normalizes rape, and blames survivors for their assault because they had "blurred lines" or because something they said, did, or were wearing made their perpetrator "know they wanted it."
We don't want to have to listen to Robin Thicke tell us he knows we want it over such a damn catchy beat. We wanna dance to music that's sexy and radical.

Don Loves Roger mashes up every episode of Mad Men, re-editing it into a story about two men who once preserved concepts of manhood and masculinity but then found relief and happiness in each other, becoming a threat to the very same patriarchal system on which their power and privilege was based. Don Loves Roger gives Don an opportunity to subvert rather than sell traditional masculinity.
As artists and critical thinkers, we are so accustom to negotiating that fine line between being a fan of popular culture and being a critic of it. My practice stems from a desire to create new narratives that bridge the gap between fan and critic while simultaneously queering concepts of copyright, challenging the author/reader and owner/user binaries on which it is based.

This Guild Artist Award might be the best new archtop we've had in the shop. This guitar's peers are not other hollow body guitars but rather high-end, hand built orchestral instruments. There is a perfectly balanced acoustic quality to this instrument - both aesthetically and sonically - that can't be faked: It's the kind of feel and sound that happens only when a small team of incredibly talented luthiers hand-builds an instrument. First things first: This guitar is the epitome of what a good archtop should sound like. It's really an acoustic instrument that can be amplified rather than an electric hollow body guitar. Unplugged, this guitar is louder, woodier and more articulate than most high-end acoustic guitars. Single note lines have a way of leaping off the fretboard, just bright enough to really speak and just dark enough to have that unmistakable hollow body warmth. Chords remain clear in every register and the separation is immaculate, perfect for solo jazz playing. If you've played any of the purely acoustic archtops that Gibson built in the '40's and '50's, it's similar to that kind of sound, but louder. Plugged in, it's the same thing, just with more volume. The neck is full and round, with '50's beefiness all over it. It's comfortable in every register and has a way of disappearing when you're trying to grab chords with big reaches. The construction is immaculate - not one cut or angle could be any better. It's almost impossible to get an archtop perfect, but Guild has managed to do it. Item Details This Guild American Patriarch Artist Award has a carved solid spruce top with a carved solid flame maple back and laminated figured maple sides. Solid tops and backs give archtops a characteristic woodiness that tons of players hunt down. And since the pickup floats above the top rather than sitting in it, there's not an extra hole to compromise the vibrations of the spruce. This is one of the reasons this guitar sounds as good as it does. At 3.125" body depth and 17" lower bout length, this guitar is on the bigger side. The vintage soft "U" shape neck is a 5-piece maple/walnut combination, and it features an ebony fretboard with 20 frets and a 10" radius. The inlays are two-tone Mother of Pearl/abalone blocks. The 24.75" scale length and 1.627" nut width creates an easy, natural feel. The pickup is a DeArmond 1100 "Rhythm Chief" floating pickup, and there's only one knob - volume. This guitar is responsive enough that your fingers function as the only tone knob. There is a compensated ebony bridge, Grover Imperial Die-Cast tuners and a bone nut. Instruments like this are rare.
