William Boyd 'asked Daniel Craig's advice' for new James Bond book Solo
William Boyd 'asked Daniel Craig's advice' for new James Bond book Solo William Boyd has revealed he asked Daniel Craig's advice before writing the new James Bond novel - but admitted he would cast Daniel Day-Lewis as his ideal 007. The writer, whose book Solo is published on September 26, is the latest in a long line of novelists to continue the adventures of the spy first created by Ian Fleming. Boyd said he approached the story, which sees 007 embroiled in a civil war in 1969 Africa, as a fan of both the books and films. He said: "The thing is with the literary Bond, as opposed to the cinematic Bond, is that he's a very complex character. I mean he is a cool, capable, guy and he's a very successful operative but what makes him fascinating for readers is the darker side of him, he's troubled, he makes mistakes, and I think that three dimensional portrait of him you get in the novels explains why he's not just some cardboard caricature spy, he's a real living, breathing, interesting individual." Boyd, who has written screenplays for films starring three Bond actors - Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan and Craig - said he had "discussions" with the current 007 about whether he should write the book. He said: "I knew he was going to say yes." The writer, whose novel Restless was adapted for television last year, said it was "highly unlikely" Solo would be made for the cinema. He said: "It is set in 1969 and the Bond films are always set in the present day. They'll never make a retro Bond, I suppose they can take my plot and update it but then it would be different and because it's set in the 1960s it gives it a particular flavour." Boyd, who has written his personal recipe for the perfect dry martini into the book, added: "If there was to be an actor to play my James Bond, I'd choose another actor who has also been in a film of mine and who I also know and who is also called Daniel - Daniel Day-Lewis - because I think Daniel Day-Lewis actually resembles the Bond that Fleming describes."- published: 25 Sep 2013

He was one of the leading American chess players during the 1950s and 1960s, and a contemporary of Bobby Fischer, whom he coached from the time Fischer was aged 11½ through the World Chess Championship 1972. Lombardy led the U.S. Student Team to Gold in the 1960 World Student Team Championship in Leningrad.[1] He was the only World Junior Champion to win with a perfect score. Fischer was scheduled to play a match against Spassky for the World Chess Championship 1972. However, Fischer had a falling out with Larry Evans, who had been Fischer's second in his successful matches against Bent Larsen and Tigran Petrosian. At the last minute, Fischer called upon Lombardy to help him with the match. Although Lombardy was still a priest, he was allowed to take time off from the priesthood to go to Reykjavík, Iceland to serve as the official second to Fischer during the World Chess Championship 1972, between Fischer and Spassky.[40] Lombardy says of the event:[41] Suffice to say, I was the only person on the intimate inside during that Match of the Century...let me point out that there were 14 adjourned games. Bobby [Fischer] and I worked together on those adjourned positions without making a single technical error!... For little renumeration, I dedicated my services in the Icelandic capital to guarantee that Bobby followed through[42] and finished the match victoriously. The assertion that Lombardy was essential to keeping Fischer in the match seems to be confirmed by other chess writers and persons in attendance.[43] [Event "Toronto"] [Site "Toronto"] [Date "1957.08.??"] [EventDate "?"] [Round "?"] [Result "0-1"] [White "Mathias Gerusel"] [Black "William James Lombardy"] [ECO "E33"] [WhiteElo "?"] [BlackElo "?"] [PlyCount "36"] 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qc2 Nc6 5.Nf3 d5 6.a3 Bxc3+ 7.Qxc3 Ne4 8.Qc2 e5 9.dxe5 Bf5 10.Qa4 O-O 11.Be3 d4 12.Rd1 dxe3 13.Rxd8 exf2 14.Kd1 Rfxd8+ 15.Kc1 a6 16.Qb3 Nc5 17.Qc3 Na5 18.e4 Nab3+ 0-1 [Event "Manila"] [Site "Manila PHI"] [Date "1973.11.03"] [EventDate "1973.10.16"] [Round "13"] [Result "1-0"] [White "William James Lombardy"] [Black "Miguel A Quinteros"] [ECO "B98"] [WhiteElo "?"] [BlackElo "?"] [PlyCount "47"] 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bg5 e6 7.f4 Be7 8.Qf3 h6 9.Bh4 Qc7 10.O-O-O Nbd7 11.Be2 Rb8 12.Qg3 Rg8 13.Rhf1 b5 14.Nxe6 fxe6 15.Qg6+ Kd8 16.e5 dxe5 17.f5 exf5 18.Bxf6 Bxf6 19.Nd5 Qc6 20.Rxf5 Rf8 21.Bg4 Rb6 22.Rxf6 gxf6 23.Qg7 Rb7 24.Qe7# 1-0 [Event "Reykjavik (Iceland)"] [Site "Reykjavik (Iceland)"] [Date "1978.??.??"] [EventDate "?"] [Round "?"] [Result "1-0"] [White "William James Lombardy"] [Black "Lev Polugaevsky"] [ECO "A17"] [WhiteElo "?"] [BlackElo "?"] [PlyCount "69"] 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 e6 3.Nf3 Bb4 4.Qc2 c5 5.a3 Ba5 6.g3 Nc6 7.Bg2 O-O 8.O-O Qe7 9.d3 h6 10.e3 d6 11.b3 Bd7 12.Bb2 Rab8 13.d4 cxd4 14.exd4 Rfc8 15.b4 Bd8 16.Rfe1 Qf8 17.Qd3 Ne7 18.Nd2 b6 19.Nb3 a5 20.d5 e5 21.Nb5 Ne8 22.Rac1 axb4 23.axb4 Rb7 24.Nd2 Ng6 25.h4 f5 26.Ra1 e4 27.Qb3 Bf6 28.Na7 Bxb2 29.Qxb2 Rcc7 30.Nc6 Bxc6 31.dxc6 Rxc6 32.Nxe4 fxe4 33.Bxe4 Ne7 34.Ra8 Rcc7 35.Bg6 1-0 [Event "US Championship 1957/58"] [Site "New York USA"] [Date "1958.01.07"] [EventDate "1957.12.17"] [Round "13"] [Result "0-1"] [White "Samuel Reshevsky"] [Black "William James Lombardy"] [ECO "E99"] [WhiteElo "?"] [BlackElo "?"] [PlyCount "80"] 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Be2 O-O 6.Nf3 e5 7.O-O Nc6 8.d5 Ne7 9.Ne1 Nd7 10.Nd3 f5 11.f3 f4 12.Bd2 g5 13.Rc1 Ng6 14.Nb5 a6 15.Na3 Nf6 16.c5 g4 17.cxd6 cxd6 18.Nc4 g3 19.h3 Bxh3 20.gxh3 Qd7 21.Nf2 gxf2+ 22.Kh2 Qe7 23.Rxf2 Nh5 24.Bb4 Rad8 25.Qd3 Nh4 26.Rg1 Ng3 27.Bf1 Rf6 28.Rc2 Rg6 29.Be1 Bh6 30.Nb6 Kh8 31.Bg2 Rdg8 32.Rc8 Bf8 33.Rc2 Qg7 34.Na8 Qh6 35.Bf1 Nxf1+ 36.Rxf1 Qg7 37.Qe2 Rg2+ 38.Qxg2 Nxg2 39.Rg1 Nxe1 40.Rxg7 Bxg7 0-1 [Event "Lone Pine"] [Site "Lone Pine, CA USA"] [Date "1977.03.23"] [EventDate "1977.03.20"] [Round "4"] [Result "0-1"] [White "John A Grefe"] [Black "William James Lombardy"] [ECO "B77"] [WhiteElo "?"] [BlackElo "?"] [PlyCount "60"] 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 Nc6 8.Qd2 O-O 9.Bc4 Bd7 10.h4 Rc8 11.Bb3 Ne5 12.O-O-O h5 13.g4 Nc4 14.Bxc4 Rxc4 15.gxh5 Nxh5 16.Rdg1 e6 17.Nde2 Qf6 18.Bg5 Qxf3 19.Rf1 Qg2 20.Qxd6 Bxc3 21.Nxc3 Rxc3 22.bxc3 Ba4 23.Qh2 Qxe4 24.Rd1 Bc6 25.Rhf1 Qc4 26.Bh6 Rc8 27.Qf2 e5 28.Qe3 Qxa2 29.Qxe5 Ba4 30.Qe4 Qa1+ 0-1- published: 30 Oct 2013

As A Man Thinketh-James Allen-Full Audio Book
James Allen (November 28, 1864 -- January 24, 1912) was a British philosophical writer known for his inspirational books and poetry and as a pioneer of the self-help movement. His best known work, As a Man Thinketh, has been mass-produced since its publication in 1902. It has been a source of inspiration to motivational and self-help authors. Born in Leicester, England, into a working-class family, Allen was the elder of two brothers. His mother could neither read nor write while his father, William, was a factory knitter. In 1879 following a downturn in the textile trade of central England, Allen's father traveled alone to America to find work and establish a new home for the family. Within two days of arriving his father was pronounced dead at New York City Hospital, believed to be a case of robbery and murder. At age fifteen, with the family now facing economic disaster, Allen was forced to leave school and find work. For much of the 1890s, Allen worked as a private secretary and stationer in several British manufacturing firms. In 1893 Allen moved to London where he met Lily Louisa Oram who he then wed in 1895. In 1898 Allen found an occupation in which he could showcase his spiritual and social interests as a writer for the magazine The Herald of the Golden Age. At this time, Allen entered a creative period where he then published his first book of many books, From Poverty to Power (1901). In 1902 Allen began to publish his own spiritual magazine, The Light of Reason, later retitled The Epoch. In 1902 Allen published his third and most famous book As a Man Thinketh. Loosely based on the biblical proverb, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he," the small work eventually became read around the world and brought Allen posthumous fame as one of the pioneering figures of modern inspirational thought. The book's minor audience allowed Allen to quit his secretarial work and pursue his writing and editing career. In 1903, the Allen family retired to the town of Ilfracombe where Allen would spend the rest of his life. Continuing to publish the Epoch, Allen produced more than one book per year until his death in 1912. There he wrote for nine years, producing 19 works. Following his death in 1912, his wife continued publishing the magazine under the name The Epoch. Lily Allen summarized her husband's literary mission in the preface to one of his posthumously published manuscripts, Foundation Stones to Happiness and Success saying:"He never wrote theories, or for the sake of writing; but he wrote when he had a message, and it became a message only when he had lived it out in his own life, and knew that it was good. Thus he wrote facts, which he had proven by practice."
