Consuelo Velázquez (August 21, 1916–January 22, 2005) (popularly also known as Consuelito Velázquez) was a Mexican concert pianist, songwriter and recording artist.

According to her obituary, she was 88 years old when she died. Most music resources, however, list her birth date as August 29, 1924, in Ciudad Guzmán, state of Jalisco, Mexico.

Velázquez was the songwriter and lyricist of many Latin standard songs, such as ''Amar y vivir'', ''Verdad amarga'', ''Franqueza'', ''Que seas feliz'', ''Cachito'', ''Enamorada'' and, most notably, the enduring 1940s-era standard ''Bésame mucho'', a romantic ballad which was soon recorded by artists around the globe, making it an international hit.

Velázquez, who is said to have begun playing the piano at the age of four, started her professional career as a classical music concert pianist, performing at Palacio de Bellas Artes and ''XEQ Radio'', but later became a singer and recording artist. According to Velázquez herself, she was strongly influenced by Spanish composer Enrique Granados.

Velázquez also was elected to the Mexican Congress, served as president for ''SACM'' (Society of Authors and Composers of Mexico), and was vice-president of ''CISAC'' (International Confederation of Authors and Composers Societies). She died of respiratory problems in Mexico City. Velázquez had been in hospital since she suffered a fall in November 2004.

Gloria Lasso (25 November 1922 – 4 December 2005) was a Spanish-born singer, long based in France. In the fifties, she was one of the major competitors to Dalida.

Born as Rosa María Coscolin in Vilafranca del Penedès, Catalonia, she achieved a degree of fame and success in the 1950s and 1960s, with songs such as ''Amour, castagnettes et tango'' (1955), ''Etranger au paradis'' (1956, a French version of ''Stranger in paradise'' by Tony Bennett), ''Buenas noches mi amor'' (1957) and ''Bon voyage'' (1958).

Eventually superseded by Dalida, she moved to Mexico, but attempted a come back in France in 1985 at the Paris Olympia. She was reportedly married six (6) times.

She died from a myocardial infarction, aged 83, at her Cuernavaca, Mexico home.

Pablo Milanés Arias (born in Bayamo, Cuba on February 24, 1943) is a Cuban singer-songwriter and guitar player. He studied at a conservatory in Havana. He is considered one of the founders of the Cuban nueva trova, along with Silvio Rodríguez and Noel Nicola. He is a pianist and guitarist whose Brazilian-like melodies set him apart from the raw style of Silvio Rodríguez.

Biography

Once aligned with the government, Milanés has since distanced himself from the official line, to the point of, during the seventies, being sent to a reeducation prison; he has since taken a more discreet line, even occupying political posts in times of greater political freedoms. In the current persecutory environment, he keeps himself mostly quiet, but still avoids participating in pro-government campaigns; but on January 26, 2006, he signed a petition supporting Puerto Rico's independence from the United States of America.

A number of artists have performed with him; among them Silvio Rodríguez, Joaquín Sabina, Ana Belén, Lilia Vera, Joan Manuel Serrat, Víctor Manuel, Compay Segundo, Raul Torres and Chucho Valdés stand out.

Among his songs, "Yolanda", "Yo me quedo", "Amo a esta isla", "Yo pisaré las calles nuevamente", "Para Vivir", and "El breve espacio en que no estás" are especially well-known.

Joseph Raymond Conniff (November 6, 1916 – October 12, 2002) was an American bandleader and arranger best known for his Ray Conniff Singers during the 1960s.

Biography

Conniff was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and learned to play the trombone from his father. He studied music arranging from a course book. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II (where he worked under Walter Schumann), he joined the Artie Shaw big band and wrote many arrangements for him. After his stint with Shaw he was then hired by Mitch Miller, then head of A&R; at Columbia Records, as their home arranger, working with several artists including Rosemary Clooney, Marty Robbins, Frankie Laine, Johnny Mathis, Guy Mitchell and Johnnie Ray. He wrote a top 10 arrangement for Don Cherry's "Band of Gold" in 1955, a single that sold more than a million copies.

Among the hit singles he backed with his orchestra (and eventually with a male chorus) were "Yes Tonight Josephine" and "Just Walkin' in the Rain" by Johnnie Ray; "Chances Are" and "It's Not for Me to Say" by Johnny Mathis; "A White Sport Coat" and "The Hanging Tree" by Marty Robbins; "Moonlight Gambler" by Frankie Laine; "Up Above My Head," a duet by Frankie Laine and Johnnie Ray; and "Pet Me, Poppa" by Rosemary Clooney. He also backed up the albums ''Tony'' by Tony Bennett, ''Blue Swing'' by Eileen Rodgers, ''Swingin' for Two'' by Don Cherry, and half the tracks of ''The Big Beat'' by Johnnie Ray.

In these early years he also produced similar-sounding records for Columbia's Epic label under the name of Jay Raye (which stands for "Joseph Raymond") amongst them a backing album and singles with Somethin' Smith and the Redheads, an American male vocal group.

Between 1957 and 1968, Conniff had 28 albums in the American Top 40, the most famous one being ''Somewhere My Love'' (1966). He topped the album list in Britain in 1969 with ''His Orchestra, His Chorus, His Singers, His Sound'', an album which was originally published to promote his European tour (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) in 1969. He also was the first American popular artist to record in Russia—in 1974 he recorded ''Ray Conniff in Moscow'' with the help of a local choir. His later albums like ''Exclusivamente Latino'', ''Amor Amor'' and ''Latinisimo'' made him very popular in Latin-American countries, even more so after performing in the Viña del Mar International Song Festival. In Brazil and Chile he was treated like a young pop superstar in the 1980s and 1990s when he was in his 70s and 80s. He even played live with his orchestra and eight-person chorus in large football stadiums as well as in Viña del Mar.

Conniff commented, "One time I was recording an album with Mitch Miller - we had a big band and a small choir. I decided to have the choir sing along with the big band using wordless lyrics. The women were doubled with the trumpets and the men were doubled with the trombones. In the booth Mitch was totally surprised and excited at how well it worked." Because of the success of his backings Mitch Miller and the new sound Conniff created Miller allowed him to make his own record, and this became the successful '''S Wonderful'', a collection of standards that were recorded with an orchestra and a wordless singing chorus (four men, four women). He released many more albums in the same vein, including ''Dance The Bop'' (1957) (a story follows about that album), ''S Marvelous'' (1957, gold album), ''S Awful Nice'' (1958), ''Concert in Rhythm'' (1958, gold album), ''Hollywood in Rhythm'' (1958), ''Broadway in Rhythm'' (1959), and ''Concert in Rhythm, Volume II'' (1959, gold album). The 1957 album ''Dance the Bop'' was an experiment by one of the brass at Columbia to cash in on a conceived dance step creation, but Ray didn't like it from the outset, and when it sold poorly, Ray had it pulled off the market.

The Ray Conniff Singers

In 1959 he started The Ray Conniff Singers (12 women and 13 men) and released the album ''It's the Talk of the Town''. This group brought him the biggest hit he ever had in his career: ''Somewhere My Love'' (1966). The title track of the album was written to the music of "Lara's Theme" from the film ''Doctor Zhivago'', and was a top 10 single in the US. The album also reached the US top 20 and went platinum, and Conniff won a Grammy. The single and album reached high positions in the international charts (a.o. Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Japan) as well. Also extraordinarily successful was the first of four Christmas albums by the Singers, ''Christmas with Conniff'' (1959). Nearly 50 years after its release, in 2004, Conniff was posthumously awarded with a platinum album/CD. Other well-known releases by the Singers included ''Ray Conniff's Hawaiian album'' (1967), featuring the hit song "Pearly Shells"; and ''Bridge Over Troubled Water'' (1970), which included Coniff's original composition "Someone", and remakes of such hits as "All I Have to do is Dream", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", and "Something".

Musically different highlights in Conniff's career are two albums he produced in cooperation with Billy Butterfield, an old friend from earlier swing days. ''Conniff Meets Butterfield'' (1959) featured Butterfield's solo trumpet and a small rhythm group; ''Just Kiddin' Around'' (after a Conniff original composition from the 1940s), released 1963, featured additional trombone solos by Ray himself. Both albums are pure light jazz and did not feature any vocals.

Later years

Conniff recorded in New York from 1955 through 1961 and mainly in Los Angeles from 1962 through 2000. Later in the 1960s he produced an average of two instrumental and one vocal album a year.

Conniff was a quiet, modest sympathetic artist. He sold about 70 million albums worldwide, and continued recording and performing until his death in 2002.

He died in Escondido, California, and is interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. His grave marker bears a musical score with the first four notes of "Somewhere My Love." Conniff was survived by his wife, Vera; a daughter, Tamara Conniff; son, Jimmy Conniff; and three grandchildren.

Legacy

In 2004, a memorial two-CD compilation set, ''The Essential Ray Conniff'', was released, featuring many rare and previously unreleased tracks. ''The Singles Collection, Vol. 1'' was released on the Collectables label in 2005 and ''The Singles Collection, Vol. 2'' was released in 2007. These collections also feature rare singles and previously unissued tracks.

His music is also featured prominently in the movie ''There's Something About Mary''.

Lola Beltrán (March 7, 1932 – March 24, 1996) was a Mexican film actress and one of the most acclaimed Mexican ranchera singers, nicknamed Lola la Grande ("Lola the Great").

Biography

In her native town of Rosario, Beltrán completed secretarial studies while she participated in singing competitions. She then moved to Mexico City, never to return to Rosario, working as a secretary at Mexico's number-one radio station, XEW, where she was professionally discovered by radio announcer Raul Mendivil.

She was married to matador and film actor Alfredo Leal and had two children with him: a daughter, singer María Elena Leal, and son José Leal. She entered the world of film in 1954 in ''El Tesoro de la Muerte''. After appearing in dozens of films, most of them musicals, she obtained a starring role in the telenovela ''Mi rival'' with Saby Kamalich. From 1976 to 1984 she also hosted the musical shows ''Noches Tapatías'' and ''El Estudio de Lola Beltrán'' respectively.

Beltrán is still considered one of the most successful ranchera artists of all time. She gave concerts before various world leaders: President Charles de Gaulle of France, the leader of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito, Soviet minister Andrei Gromyko, Premier of the Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev, King of Spain Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia, Queen Elizabeth II, American Presidents Dwight D. She was the first ranchera singer to perform at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts), the premier opera house and concert hall in Mexico. She also sang in the Olympia Music Hall in Paris, the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow and the Conservatory of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) in the former Soviet Union.

Beltrán was honored in 1995 with her inclusion into a series of commemorative postage stamps, issued by her native Mexico, honoring 'Popular Idols of Radio'. This was done in recognition of her lifetime achievement in the realm of popular music and her success in spreading an appreciation of Mexican culture throughout the world.

Death

Soon after recording ''Disco del Siglo'' (English: ''Album of the Century'') with Lucha Villa and Amalia Mendoza "La Tariácuri" (produced by Juan Gabriel) she died of a massive pulmonary embolism at Ángeles Hospital in Mexico City. Her body lay on display in the rotunda of the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City in order to give her countrymen a chance to say goodbye. Only the most acclaimed artists, recording artists, poets, writers and actors are accorded this honor.
