There may be no more an enduring sound that has spanned the long, diverse history of popular music than the blues shuffle. Born from the boogie-woogie sounds of jazz piano in the very early 20th century, the swinging shuffle groove is built from an insistent and repetitive forward-leaning rhythm that is generally written in 12/8 meter—wherein four consecutive beats are each subdivided into three evenly spaced eighth notes—and comprises a repeating quarter-note/eighth-note rhythm that sounds like "da—da, da—da, da—da, da—da." In this edition of In Deep, we'll unravel the guitar artistry of three masters of the blues shuffle: Chicago's Jimmy Reed and Muddy Waters, and Texas' Lightnin' Hopkins.

Specifically, I'll focus on a familiar vamp known as the "i-IV (one-four) Dorian vamp," which is found in classic rock songs as well as jazz, funk and R&B; tunes. This name describes a chord movement that's based on the Dorian mode and goes from the "one minor" chord (i), or "one minor-seven" (i7), to "four major" (IV). A famous example of a i-IV Dorian vamp is the verse accompaniment in the Pink Floyd classic "Breathe," which goes Em7 to A, one chord per bar, at a laid-back tempo. (Neil Young's "Down by the River" uses this same vamp.)

As a guitarist who grew up exploring a wide variety of musical styles, I have always been inspired by the sounds of other stringed instruments, such as the pedal steel, fiddle, mandolin and banjo, and the ways such instruments foster, due to their different tunings, distinctly non-guitar-like ways of playing melodies or chords. I'm especially intrigued by the five-string banjo because of its bright tone and percussive quality and the way it naturally lends itself to playing rolling, syncopated arpeggio patterns, like those prominently featured in bluegrass music. Great banjo players, like the innovative and technically brilliant Béla Fleck, have shown the world what's possible with the instrument and how, in the right hands, it can be used to play a lot more than just traditional folk- and bluegrass-style licks, as his highly eclectic, progressive style showcases.

Two of my favorite metal guitar players, Marty Friedman and James Murphy, have distinguished themselves with their incorporation of such exotic scales into their solos. The scales I've been discussing thus far find their roots in Arabian and Japanese music, and I'd like to continue this month with a look at another Arabian scale, Arabian pentatonic minor. As its name implies, Arabian pentatonic minor is, like the standard minor pentatonic scale, a five-tone scale (penta means five and tonic means tone), but it offers a slight twist.

As in the previous columns, I'll demonstrate how to move diagonally across the fretboard to connect scale positions, an approach that I employ to a great extent to play melodic phrases and solos. Let's start with a series of phrases that are all based on the E Aeolian mode, or E natural minor scale (E Fs G A B C D). FIGURE 1 details a series of three different three-note phrases, each played in a three-notes-per-string pattern and starting with the index finger. I begin in seventh position and play through the first six notes of E Aeolian. In bar 2, I shift up to ninth position and play a six-note pattern that begins on the fifth degree of E Aeolian, B, sounding the notes B C D E Fs G. Finally, I move up to 11th position to play a six-note pattern beginning on the second, or ninth, Fs, sounding the notes Fs G A B C D. The high D at the end of the phrase is useful, because it can easily be bent up one whole step to the E root. By connecting all three patterns this way, I am moving up the fretboard in a diagonal path that covers a lot of range.
