James H. "Jimmy" Martin (August 10, 1927 – May 14, 2005) was an American bluegrass musician, known as the "King of Bluegrass".
Martin was born in Sneedville, Tennessee, Jimmy Martin was raised in the hard farming life of rural East Tennessee. He grew up near Sneedville, singing in church and with friends from surrounding farms. His mother and stepfather who used to sing gospel were his first influences. When he was in his teens he bought a guitar. Martin told The Big Book of Bluegrass: "I learned the basic chords from an old hillbilly named Reuben Gibson, who lived in the hills around Sneedville, and I taught myself how to play. I heard Lester Flatt and Charlie Monroe both play runs, but I didn't try to top them. I mostly just developed them how I felt, when it came natural for a song." In his teens, he played guitar in a local string band and later appeared on radio with Tex Climer and the Blue Band Coffee Boys.
In the winter of 1949, Mac Wiseman had just left Bill Monroe's "Bluegrass Boys". Martin, who wanted to apply for the vacant post as guitarist, rode the bus into Nashville. He sneaked in backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. While picking his guitar, he was overheard by "Bluegrass Boys" banjo player Rudy Lyle who brought him forward and presented him to Monroe. Martin sang two songs with Monroe and was hired instantly.

jimmy gives a tour of his hermitage, tn homestead. he sure cussed a lot that day. this is film #1 in a series of short films about Mr. Good'n Country, quite possibly the last of the unfiltered bluegrass performers. He called it like his Sneedville, Tn eyes saw it. Remember, there are 2 kinds of tears and Jimmy has cried them both. Stay tuned for 35 more short films about Jimmy. RIP ole pal. NOTE: i have no control over the shitheaded advertisements which pop up during and before Jimmy's video. If i could I would but since i do not own the music someone has the say so. my apologies. Enjoy. PS- if you don't have anything nice to say about jimmy please refrain from letting the rest of us know. this is about celebrating a truly unique guy and if that does not sit well with your pal...
A clip from the "Pioneers of Bluegrass Music" Documentary.
Jimmy tells about his life from early hardships to fame and fortune.
The original version of the Mountain Folk radio, TV & Internet show with producer / host "East Side" Dave Kline went on the air during the summer of 1980 as "East Side Dave's Bluegrass Festival" which later evolved to the Mountain Folk Show and has been promoting bluegrass, folk, mountain and outdoor-themed acoustic music ever since. The show was one of the very first radio shows to be podcast around the world on the Internet out of Penn State University. This series of Mountain Folk Vault Interviews goes back in time to the vault of archives from the many guests who were interviewed on the show. The interviews are offered here as a contribution by the show and producer to the archive of information regarding the artists and music that the show was created to promote. The segments in t...

Honey you don't know my mind I'm lonesome all the time
Born to lose a drifter that's me
You can travel for so long then a rambler's heart goes
wrong
Baby you don't know my mind today
Heard the music of a rail slept in every old dirty jail
And life's too short for you to worry me
When I find I can't win I'll be checking out again
Baby you don't know my mind today
I've been a hobo and a tramp my soul has done been
stamped
Lord things I know I learned the hard hard way
I ain't here to judge or plea but to give my poor heart
ease
Baby you don't know my mind today
Honey you don't know my mind I'm lonesome all the time
Born to lose a drifter that's me
You say I'm sweet and kind I can love you a thousand
times
