Barak Marshall: www.facebook.com/barakmarshalldance
Rooster--a coproduction of the Suzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre and the Israeli Opera--is a dance-theatre work for 12 dancers, the opera singer Lillia Gretsova, and the actress/singer Margalit Oved. Based on the Yiddish writer I. L. Peretz's short story "Bontscha the Silent", the work begins at midnight and ends at dawn and follows the dream of the main character who struggles against his own weakness as well as the jealousies and cruelties of others in his attempt to find love.
Barak Marshall - Biography
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Barak Marshall is the son of acclaimed dancer, choreographer and musician Margalit Oved. Since his accidental entrance into dance in 1995, Barak established himself as one of Israeli dance’s most innovative and unique voices. His first work, Aunt Leah, won first prize at the Suzanne Dellal Centre’s Shades of Dance Choreography Competition. In 1998, his work Emma Goldman’s Wedding was chosen to participate in the Bagnolet International Competition in Paris where it swept the awards—winning first prize, the Prix d’Auteur, the Bonnie Byrd Award and the ADAMI Award. His company

In 1999, Barak was invited by Ohad Naharin to become the Batsheva Dance Company’s first-ever house choreographer; he created several works for both the junior and senior companies before severely breaking his leg in 2001 and leaving dance completely. In 2008, Barak the Suzanne Dellal Centre invited Barak to return to Israel to created Monger—his first work in seven years. Following success of Monger, in 2009 Barak was co-commissioned by the Suzanne Dellal Centre and the Israeli Opera to create Rooster, a work for twelve dancers, an opera singer and Margalit Oved. Both Monger and Rooster works have toured throughout Israel, Europe, Asia and the United States including performances at the Montepellier Festival, Dance Umbrella UK, Jacob’s Pillow Festival, Switzerland’s STEPS Festival as well as in China, Spain, Romania, Italy, Yugoslavia, Croatia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and South Korea. Selected Press Quotes and Reviews
"You can tune an orchestra to his voice" -- Yo Yo Ma
“Barak Marshall is a true auteur, a fully-fledged choreographer, with a powerful style and a unique voice. His work is muscular, original, fevered, carried by excellent dancers, and by an internal force and an intelligence that infuse it with eloquence that is at times arresting.” --Le Nouvel Observateur
“Barak Marshall has a mean power to communicate through dance and physical theatre. His choreography is everything we wanted it to be—compelling, engaging, punchy and innovative. The sixty minutes of this performance felt more like five and left us wanting more.” --Dance Ground UK
“The brutal grace of Barak Marshall.” --Le Progres
“Barak Marshall’s work is an absolute stunner, not because it wanders into the wide world, but for its sheer strength, recognizable character, spontaneity and youth.” --The Jerusalem Post

The Evolution of the Israeli Right: From Jabotinsky to Begin to Netanyahu
On August 23, 2012 at the Luxe Hotel Sunset in Los Angeles, Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors presented an evening devoted to exploring the historical roots of the Israeli right, from Vladimir Jabotinsky to Menachem Begin to Benjamin Netanyahu, and a discussion of its current relevance to what is happening in Israel today.
Vladimir Jabotinsky was a journalist, essayist, translator, author, novelist, orator, military leader, and head of the Revisionist Zionist movement, which attempted to return Zionism in the 1920s and 1930s to its Herzlian roots. Menachem Begin was one his principal followers, the head of Jabotinsky’s youth movement in Poland and later the leader of its military wing, the Irgun. Benjamin Netanyahu’s father was Jabotinsky’s personal secretary, and Prime Minister Netanyahu has frequently cited Jabotinsky as an influence on him in considering the current threats against Israel.
Understanding the current status of the right in Israel requires an understanding of the connections – and also the differences -- between these three historic figures. It may also provide some insights into the approach of the current Israeli government as it faces a continuing existential threat.
Our three speakers each devoted a short presentation to each of these figures, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A; with the audience.
The speakers:
Rick Richman is editor of Jewish Current Issues. His articles and posts have appeared in American Thinker, Commentary Magazine, Contentions, The Jewish Journal, The Jewish Press, The New York Sun, and PJ Media. He holds an A.B. cum laude from Harvard and a J.D. cum laude from New York University Law School.
Steven M. Goldberg is National Vice Chairman of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), the U.S. representative on the Executive Board of World Likud, a member of the Extended Executive Board of the World Zionist Organization (WZO), and Vice President of Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors. He is a partner in the Los Angeles law firm of Russ, August & Kabat, and a graduate of Harvard University and New York University School of Law.
Professor Louis Gordon holds a J.D. from Yeshiva University and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Southern California. His work has appeared in the Forward, Studies In Zionism, Midstream, Haumma, the Jerusalem Post, the Jerusalem Report, Middle East Quarterly, Tradition, and numerous other publications.
The evening will also feature an excerpt from the documentary film, Flames of Revolt: The Story of the IRGUN, which includes rare footage of those who participated in the events leading up to the re-creation of the modern State of Israel.
This presentation provided us with both historical and current relevance.
