Tiny house pioneer Jay Shafer: thinking beyond trailer parks
Tiny house pioneer Jay Shafer: thinking beyond trailer parks
In 1997, Jay Shafer built a tiny house on wheels that shunned trailer park conventions and attempted to mimic a classic gabled home. This act of design rebellion- coupled with Shafer's challenge to building codes (first in Iowa City and later in California) and his co-founding of the Small House Society- helped launch a movement. He named his first tiny house "Tumbleweed" and when he began designing and building small homes for others he named his company Tumbleweed Tiny House Company. Appearing on major TV shows and in most magazines, he became the poster boy for the Small House Movement. In 2012, he split with his Tumbleweed company and founded Four Lights Tiny House Company to focus more on design and on his plans for a tiny house village. His new homes are what he calls "unitized"; they can be more tailored to an individual's needs. "It's kind of like LEGO meets IKEA and they make a porn movie together". Houses can be ordered with kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms moved about as you choose and with optional loft or bumpouts for an extra bed or office space. He hopes his tiny house village - still in the planning phase - will offer people a way around building codes. He hopes it will be mostly his designs, but is open to anyone who wants to bring a well-designed tiny house (homes, not RVs) to his planned community based in Sonoma, California. He forgets and refers to it as a trailer park, but he says it's really a "village of tiny houses". The working title is "Napoleon Complex" with the byline "cohousing for the antisocial". Debt/car-free tiny house couple: simple living + resilience
Six years ago, Tammy Strobel was unhappy- "I was commuting 2 hours a day, going to a job I hated, overweight, unhappy, kind of middle class plight". Then she watched a youtube video featuring Dee Williams and her tiny home- a moment she calls her "turning point"- and she began to dream about less. Prior to downsizing Tammy and her husband, Logan Smith, were living in a two-bedroom apartment, driving two cars, commuting long distances and $30,000 in debt, but they were hesitant change the status quo. "Initially, we resisted the idea of moving into a smaller one-bedroom apartment because we were more concerned about appearances and space for guests than for our financial well-being. We decided something needed to change once we realized our debt was causing us so much stress." Tammy and Logan began with small steps. They sold one car and moved into a one bedroom apartment. Next it was a 400 square foot home. Today they are car-free and living in a 128-square-foot home on wheels (designed by Dee Williams' company PAD). Along the way, the couple shed weight, stress, debt and the unhappiness they felt being tied to jobs they didn't enjoy. Today, Tammy is a full-time blogger/photographer/teacher. Tammy recently published a book titled "You Can Buy Happiness (and It's Cheap)", but she explains that it's not exactly happiness that she pursues, but resilience. "Jobs move, people lose jobs, people die," she explains, "So how can you structure your life so that you're more flexible and embrace the good stuff even when loss makes it really really difficult?" One of the biggest side effects of living in a small, mortgage-free home on wheels is the freedom to move, something that has served them well in the past year. When Tammy's father had a stroke, unfettered by home or car loans, Tammy was able to be with him during the last months of his life. When Logan lost his job (it was transferred to Boston), they were able to pick up their home and move from Portland to Northern California to be closer to family. For their first move, they attached their tiny, wheeled home to the back of a pickup truck and drove the 400 miles from Portland to Logan's family cattle ranch in Montague, California (in exchange for free rent they put in "workshare" hours). Within the year, they moved again to be closer to Tammy's mother: this time they parked in her yard in Red Bluff, CA. Again within the same year, they moved to a more permanent home in Chico (their college town and still close enough to family) where they pay $500 in rent for an empty lot and hookups (it was previously occupied by a mobile home). "Even though the past year has been a lot of upheaval with moving the house, like it's harder than you think to move the tiny house and stressful and all that, but I'm really grateful for that because we've had that flexibility to really be there for family", explains Tammy. Her father's death "was part of the reason we decided to move back home just to be closer to family and really focus on that because that's what matters, you only get one shot." Tiny Blog Prototype (HD)
More thoughts based on comments below: I agree that the moving image would be distracting, the original idea was to lock a pic as the background (like the first example in the video). The moving video/streaming felt creepy, but new and different in a fun way. I wanted to include it as an idea. The theme I really like here is exposing the environment of the blogger. I don't think this would make sense for large corporate blogs, but it could be a fun modern take/throwback to the days of personal publishing sites like LiveJournal etc. Thanks for watching.- published: 15 Dec 2013

[MV] TINY-G(타이니지) _ Miss you(보고파) Tiny-G, trying something new every album, finally came back with a new look with their third single album. The third single album "Miss You" is done by the producing team [RED ROCKET], who has been working with the famous Kim Tae-Woo, Rainbow, and In Soon-i. "Miss you" is a pop-dance song that has electronic sound mixed with strong synth sound. In Tiny-G style, the girls are talking about the person they love, and how their crushes are being ignored. They are not complaining, but speaking out that they miss the other person in a confident way. It is a additive song with a frank melody which everyone can agree to. ▶ LOENMUSIC FB : http://www.facebook.com/LOENMUSIC.official ▶ LOENMUSIC TW : https://twitter.com/LOEN_MUSIC- published: 02 Oct 2013

Sarah Jarosz: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Bluegrass' most beloved pros often play well into their 80s and 90s, so it would surprise no one if our children's children's children turn up at a Sarah Jarosz concert 70 years from now. The singer and multi-instrumentalist first surfaced as an 18-year-old wunderkind with the release of 2009's Song Up In Her Head, which generated the first of what will likely be many Grammy nominations; now a grizzled 22, she's out performing songs from her fine new third album, Build Me Up From Bones. That record forms the basis of Jarosz's recent concert at the NPR Music offices, performed with the aid of fiddler Alex Hargreaves and cellist Nathaniel Smith. All polished young pros, the three breezed in happily and knocked us out with a careful mix of technical proficiency and poppy warmth. It's an enduring combination, as this sweet little set of songs amply demonstrates. --STEPHEN THOMPSON Set List "Over The Edge" "Build Me Up From Bones" "Fuel The Fire" Credits Producers: Bob Boilen, Denise DeBelius, Stephen Thompson; Editor: Gabriella Garcia-Pardo; Audio Engineer: Kevin Wait; Videographers: Denise DeBelius, Becky Harlan, Abbey Oldham- published: 09 Dec 2013

Dessa: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Part of the Twin Cities hip-hop collective Doomtree, rapper, singer, poet and songwriter Dessa divides her time between singing and rapping, often landing on a spoken-word splitting of the difference. The week she performed this Tiny Desk Concert, she appeared at an All Songs Considered live listening party, during which she opined articulately before closing the night by singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in the style popularized by Jeff Buckley. This year, the former philosophy major released both a new album (Parts of Speech) and a chapbook of poetry called A Pound of Steam. As versatile as she is, Dessa faced down a string of challenges in getting to the Tiny Desk. Near the tail-end of a tour — during which thousands of dollars' worth of her band's gear was stolen — her voice started to give out as she battled a bad cold. (Keep an eye out for her expression of relief at the completion of "The Man I Knew" in this set.) And, of course, Dessa and her band had to come up with ways to perform three songs from Parts of Speech in such a way that the drums and guitars wouldn't drown out the unamplified voices of herself and singer Aby Wolf. Once we started recording, though, the seams never showed, let alone split: If it weren't for a bit of between-song tea-sipping, we'd have never known she was under the weather. Instead, what we got was as forceful and whip-smart as everything else Dessa sings, speaks, raps and writes. --STEPHEN THOMPSON Set List "Fighting Fish" "The Man I Knew" "The Lamb" Credits Producers: Denise DeBelius, Stephen Thompson; Audio Engineer: Kevin Wait; Videographers: Denise DeBelius, Becky Harlan, Meredith Rizzo- published: 09 Dec 2013
