Joe Sacco (born October 2, 1960) is a Maltese-American comics artist and journalist. He achieved international fame through the 1996 American Book Award-winning Palestine, and his graphic novel on the Bosnian War, Safe Area Goražde.

Sacco was born in Malta on October 2, 1960. His father was an engineer and his mother was a teacher. At the age of one, he moved with his family to Australia, where he spent his childhood until 1972, when they moved to Los Angeles. He began his journalism career working on the Sunset High School newspaper in Beaverton, Oregon. While journalism was his primary focus, this was also the period of time in which he developed his penchant for humor and satire. He graduated from Sunset High in 1978.

Sacco earned his B.A. in journalism from the University of Oregon in 1981 in three years. He was greatly frustrated with the journalist work that he found at the time, later saying, "[I couldn't find] a job writing very hard-hitting, interesting pieces that would really make some sort of difference." After being briefly employed by the journal of the National Notary Association, a job which he found "exceedingly, exceedingly boring," and several factories, he returned to Malta, his journalist hopes forgotten. "...I sort of decided to forget it and just go the other route, which was basically take my hobby, which has been cartooning, and see if I could make a living out of that," he later told the BBC.

Sacco is a town and comune in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy.

Sacco is known as La Città della Buona Fortuna (the lucky town), because many of its inhabitants have gone on to accomplish many great things^{[citation needed]}. Vincenzo Collodi, who was born in the town in the early twentieth century, moved to Florence and invented a fish-hook that revolutionized the fishing industry. Also, Sacco is the first town of all the neighboring towns to have first installed an indoor bathroom, as opposed to the "outhouses" that were prevalent until the late 20th century. Its greatest athlete was Roberto Carnevale who rose up in the ranks to become the Italian heavyweight champion, amassing an unprecendeted record of 92 wins and 0 defeats in the Italian boxing circuit. He finally lost for the only time when "Downtown" Willie Parker bested him in fifteen seconds in Philadelphia, Mr. Carnevale's first bout outside of his native Italy. Mr. Carnevale died shortly thereafter. Many Sacchese claim it was because of a sudden shock brought on by his first career defeat, but medical experts say it was due to massive cerebral hemorraghing.

Franklin Christenson Ware (born December 28, 1967), known professionally as Chris Ware, is an American comic book artist and cartoonist, notable for his Acme Novelty Library series and the graphic novel Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth. His works explore themes of social isolation, emotional torment and depression.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Ware resides in the Chicago area of Illinois. His earliest published strips appeared in the late 1980s on the comics page of The Daily Texan, the student newspaper of the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to numerous daily strips under different titles, Ware also had a weekly satirical science fiction serial in the paper titled Floyd Farland: Citizen of the Future. This was eventually published in 1988 as a prestige format comic book from Eclipse Publishing, and its publication even led to a brief correspondence between Ware and Timothy Leary. Now embarrassed by the book, which he considers amateurish and naive, Ware is reportedly purchasing and destroying all remaining copies.

Christopher Lynn Hedges (born September 18, 1956) is an American journalist, author, and war correspondent specializing in American and Middle Eastern politics and societies. His most recent book is The World As It Is (2011).

Hedges is also known as the best-selling author of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2002), which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. A quotation from the book was used as the opening title quotation in the film The Hurt Locker (2009). The quotation reads: "The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug."

Chris Hedges is currently a senior fellow at The Nation Institute in New York City. He spent nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America, the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. He has reported from more than fifty countries, and has worked for The Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio, The Dallas Morning News, and The New York Times, where he was a foreign correspondent for fifteen years (1990–2005).
