Spyderco is a Golden, Colorado, U.S.A. based cutlery company that produces knives and knife sharpeners. Spyderco pioneered many features that are now common in folding knives, including the pocket clip, serrations, and the opening hole. Spyderco has collaborated with 30 custom knife makers, athletes, and self-defense instructors for designs and innovated the usage of 20 different blade materials.
Spyderco was founded by Sal Glesser. The first product Spyderco produced was the Portable Hand in 1976, this "spider-shaped device", which gave the company its name, was a series of angles, ball joints and alligator clips that helped people such as jewelers and hobbyists to work with small parts. Spyderco's Founder, Sal Glesser, and his wife Gail, converted an old bread delivery truck into a motor-home and traveled to shows. As they became more successful, they graduated from the bread truck to a truck and trailer. They settled in Golden in November 1978. Spyderco began producing knife sharpeners in 1978 and produced their first folding knife, the C01 Worker, in 1981. This knife was the first to feature a round hole in the blade designed for fast, one-handed and ambidextrous opening, which is now the company's trademark. Additionally, the company claims that this was the first knife to feature a pocket clip on the right side of the handle.
A blade is the portion of a tool, weapon, or machine with an edge that is designed to cut and/or puncture, stab, slash, chop, slice, thrust, or scrape surfaces or materials. A blade may be made from a flaking stone, such as flint, metal (usually steel), ceramic, or other material. Blades are one of humanity's oldest tools, and continue to be used for combat, food preparation, and other purposes.
During food preparation, knives are mainly used for slicing, chopping, and piercing.
In combat, a blade may be used to slash or puncture, and may also be thrown or otherwise propelled. The function is to sever a nerve, muscle or tendon fibers, or blood vessel to disable or kill the adversary. Severing a major blood vessel typically leads to death due to exsanguination. Shrapnel wounds via the fragments' blade-like nature.
Blades may be used to scrape, moving the blade sideways across a surface, as in an ink eraser, rather than along or through a surface.
A simple blade intended for cutting has two faces that meet at an edge. Ideally this edge would have no roundness but in practice all edges can be seen to be rounded to some degree under magnification either optically or with an electron microscope. Force is applied to the blade, either from the handle or pressing on the back of the blade. The handle or back of the blade has a large area compared to the fine edge. This concentration of applied force onto the small edge area increases the pressure exerted by the edge. It is this high pressure that allows a blade to cut through a material by breaking the bonds between the molecules/crystals/fibres/etc. in the material. This necessitates the blade being strong enough to resist breaking before the other material gives way.

The Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker can be found for about $50-60 and offers a simple, convenient way to sharpen an edge at either 30 or 40 degree angle. It uses ceramic rods that are arranged in a V-shape position so that all you need to do is to keep the edge pointed down. A simply whetstone is of course a cheaper alternative for knife sharpening but it requires a lot of practice to get the angle right consistently. Buy your Spyderco Paramilitary 2 at Blade HQ: http://shrsl.com/?~cj2t The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is a well-built, well designed knife that can withstand serious hard-use - and I've proven it. On an outing with Ben from BladeHQ, I took this knife into the cold, snowy wilderness where I did some hard cutting against numerous pine boughs, and then batoned it cross-grain into a dead tree - then also with-the-grain to split some wood. After a good deal of continuous hard use, the edge was still sharp enough to create fine shavings for a fire, and the black DLC coating on the blade was still looking very good. Great ergonomics, a super-strong lock, very tough blade steel, and really nice aesthetics all combine in one of the best, most popular knives Spyderco has ever produced. Besides all of ...
