A soldering iron is a hand tool used in soldering. It supplies heat to melt solder so that it can flow into the joint between two workpieces.
A soldering iron is composed of a heated metal tip and an insulated handle. Heating is often achieved electrically, by passing an electric current (supplied through an electrical cord or battery cables) through a resistive heating element. Cordless irons can be heated by combustion of gas stored in a small tank, often using a catalytic heater rather than a flame. Simple irons less commonly used than in the past were simply a large copper bit on a handle, heated in a flame.
Soldering irons are most often used for installation, repairs, and limited production work in electronics assembly. High-volume production lines use other soldering methods. Large irons may be used for soldering joints in sheet metal objects. Less common uses include pyrography (burning designs into wood) and plastic welding.
For electrical and electronics work, a low-power iron, a power rating between 15 and 35 watts, is used. Higher ratings are available, but do not run at higher temperature; instead there is more heat available for making soldered connections to things with large thermal capacity, for example, a metal chassis. Some irons are temperature-controlled, running at a fixed temperature in the same way as a soldering station, with higher power available for joints with large heat capacity. Simple irons run at an uncontrolled temperature determined by thermal equilibrium; when heating something large their temperature drops a little, possibly too much to melt solder.
Iron is a chemical element with symbol Fe (from Latin: ferrum) and atomic number 26. It is a metal in the first transition series. It is by mass the most common element on Earth, forming much of Earth's outer and inner core. It is the fourth most common element in the Earth's crust. Its abundance in rocky planets like Earth is due to its abundant production by fusion in high-mass stars, where the production of nickel-56 (which decays to the most common isotope of iron) is the last nuclear fusion reaction that is exothermic. Consequently, radioactive nickel is the last element to be produced before the violent collapse of a supernova scatters precursor radionuclide of iron into space.
Like other group 8 elements, iron exists in a wide range of oxidation states, −2 to +6, although +2 and +3 are the most common. Elemental iron occurs in meteoroids and other low oxygen environments, but is reactive to oxygen and water. Fresh iron surfaces appear lustrous silvery-gray, but oxidize in normal air to give hydrated iron oxides, commonly known as rust. Unlike many other metals which form passivating oxide layers, iron oxides occupy more volume than the metal and thus flake off, exposing fresh surfaces for corrosion.

The soldering equipment on eBay is actually very usable. I test a cheap generic 936 soldering station in this video, including a look inside the unit and at the PCB, and exploration of the actual iron. One of the nicest things about these soldering stations is the ready availability of cheap parts from the internal PCBs to the complete irons and a wide selection of tips/bits. If you buy one of these soldering stations with a UK plug, make sure you check if it has a solid metal earth pin. If it has a plastic sleeve on the pin cut the plug off and replace it with a good quality one. The sleeve can prevent a proper earth connection in the socket. What is the best soldering iron to buy? Should you spend a lot of money or will a cheap one do the job. If you are mainly repairing audio plugs and leads this video will help you make the decision. One manufacturer gave these suggestions. A 15 watt iron will suit circuit board, micro components and thin wires. A 25 watt iron is good for general audio parts and cables. A 40 watt iron is suited to more automotive size cables and parts. To keep it simple a 25 or 40 watt soldering iron is more than adequate for most basic audio lead repairs. You can use higher wattage irons as long as the tip of the iron is not too large. These large irons don’t have a place in an audio tech’s tool box. I was looking for soldering bits on ebay and saw this very cheap iron that obviously wasn't grounded. So I bought one for us to take a look inside. Sorry for the rude jump-cut in the middle of the video that soiled all the juicy teardown goodness. The iPad decided to curtail the recording due to low memory, which is reasonable enough. Although there would be a lot more memory for video if it wasn't filled with no-choice "apps". You can toss Big Clive a dollar for coffee and cookies at https://www.patreon.com/bigclive I'm not going to provide a link to the iron, since the lack of a ground connection makes it a bit shady for electronic work.

Equip yourself with the power to build circuits that last. Soldering is surprisingly simple once you know some basic techniques and understand how it works.
Portable soldering irons are a remarkably handy tool. They heat up quicker than their plug-in cousins, and most portable Soldering Irons offer a hot blower action. It's good for shriveling heat shrink tubing and for solder reflow, but it's too hot for softening adhesives. Leave that to a heat gun. These irons burn the same butane used to refill lighters, available at grocery, hardware, and liquor stores for a couple bucks. Due to shipping regulations, new irons are shipped empty.
