Turkey has dismissed 350 police officers in Ankara over a corruption scandal that has shaken the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey\'s private Dogan News Agency said on Tuesday that the police officers, including heads of major departments, were fired overnight for their alleged role in a high-profile corruption investigation into the government.

Today, after two weeks of fighting in South Sudan that is believed to have killed more than 1,000 people, representatives from both the government and rebel forces met in Ethiopia to discuss the possibility of peace.

But back in South Sudan, the fighting continued.

Both sides hope to gain territory to strengthen their position at the bargaining table. Rebels captured the city of Bor days ago; now the Sudan People\'s Liberation Army (SPLA) is trying to win it back. Bor is 125 slow, painful miles from the capital city of Juba—a trip made far quicker by helicopter. And so VICE flew to the front lines with the SPLA.

The Bangladeshi prime minister has called her party\'s victory in the Sunday\'s blood-soaked election legitimate, blaming her rivals for the unprecedented violence on the polling day.

Voter turnout was reportedly poor, with just over 20 percent taking part. The country\'s main opposition party, which had boycotted the elections, has termed the vote a scandalous farce. The ruling party had bagged the majority of the three-hundred seats in parliament before the election. Meanwhile, the deadly violence, which erupted across the country on Sunday, claimed more lives.

There were fears that Islamic militants loyal to ousted President Mohamed Mursi would target them claiming they played a large role in the protests which lead up to his removal. But worshippers are resting their hopes for the future in the adoption of Egypt's new constitution which criminalises discrimination. " We thank God on this day which made all of us united, the state has made this day an official holiday for all Egyptians, Christmas comes this year at the beginning of a new phase in the history of our beloved Egypt, in the implementation of the constitution," said Archpriest: Saleeb Matta Sawiris. However nothing was left to chance with metal detectors placed at church entrances after a wave of attacks blamed on Islamists which have left dozens of churches destroyed. Although they claimed that they came from election and people should have no rights to overthrow them, millions of massive Thai people disagreed and were out on the streets risking their lives as they could not stand them to corrupt the country anymore. Whether the peaceful protests of millions of people can overthrow a shameless government is remained to be seen. Subscribe to ITN News: http://goo.gl/zRYiYn Al Qaeda-linked militants and tribal fighters who have taken over parts of Fallujah, Iraq, have pledged to continue fighting Iraqi government. An unnamed commander of the anti-government Fallujah military council stated their aims on camera: "The revolutionaries of Fallujah tribes are resolved to punish those, the covetous, who are linked to the sectarian government." Al Qaeda's Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have been steadily tightening its grip in the vast Anbar province in recent months in a bid to create a Sunni Muslim state straddling the frontier with Syria. But last week's capture of positions in nearby Ramadi and large parts of Fallujah was the first time in years that Sunni insurgents have taken ground and held their positions for days. Iraqi government forces battling an al Qaeda offensive near the Syrian border launched an air strike on Ramadi city on Sunday killing 25 Islamist militants, according to local officials. However, in Fallujah, ISIL's task is being made made easier by disgruntled tribesmen who have joined its fight against the government. Report by Mark Morris. • Updated: 07 Jan 2014
Turkey has dismissed 350 police officers in Ankara over a corruption scandal that has shaken the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Turkey's private Dogan News Agency said on Tuesday that the police officers, including heads of major departments, were fired overnight for their alleged role in a high-profile corruption investigation into the government. It also said that the officers were sacked by a government decree issued at midnight. Heads of financial crimes, anti-smuggling, cyber crime and organized crime units were among the fired officers. The report added that the decree appointed replacements for 250 of the dismissed officers. On January 4, Erdogan described the scandal as a "plot" against the country's "future and stability", saying that foreign-backed elements in Turkey are planning to oust his government. Erdogan's plot charges are in response to the inquiry that led to the arrests of government officials and prominent businessmen close to the government on December 17. On December 25, 2013, Erdogan announced a major cabinet reshuffle replacing 10 ministers including the economy, interior, and environment ministers, who had resigned from their posts after their sons were arrested in the scandal. The scandal has also affected the country's economy with the currency, lira, at record lows against the dollar and the value of shares tumbling on the Istanbul stock exchange this week. Erdogan has accused US-based cleric, Fethullah Gulen, of instigating the corruption investigation. Gulen is an influential figure in Turkey and reportedly has many followers in some arms of the country's state apparatus such as the judiciary, the police and secret services. Gulen has denied any involvement in Turkey's recent political crisis.

Millions of Americans have hunkered down in anticipation of a record-setting "polar vortex" expected to bring dangerously low temperatures to much of the United States. The rotating pool of cold, dense air was forecast to affect more than half of the continental US throughout Sunday and into Monday and Tuesday, with wind-chill warnings stretching from Montana to Alabama. Rebels captured the city of Bor days ago; now the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) is trying to win it back. Bor is 125 slow, painful miles from the capital city of Juba—a trip made far quicker by helicopter. And so VICE flew to the front lines with the SPLA. AFTER North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un declared his uncle to be "despicable human scum, worse than a dog," details of his execution have emerged. The details were disclosed in a report, where unlike previous executions of political prisoners which were carried out by firing squads with machine guns, Jang Song Thaek was stripped naked and thrown into a cage, along with his five closest aides, the Straits Times reports. "Then 120 hounds, starved for three days, were allowed to prey on them until they were completely eaten up. This is called "quan jue", or execution by dogs."

The Bangladeshi prime minister has called her party's victory in the Sunday's blood-soaked election legitimate, blaming her rivals for the unprecedented violence on the polling day. Voter turnout was reportedly poor, with just over 20 percent taking part. The country's main opposition party, which had boycotted the elections, has termed the vote a scandalous farce. The ruling party had bagged the majority of the three-hundred seats in parliament before the election. Meanwhile, the deadly violence, which erupted across the country on Sunday, claimed more lives.
