WWI - Collapse of the Ottoman Empire - British imperialism - Arab nationalism
The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt. It was opened in 1869 after 10 years of construction. It enables ship transport between Europe and Asia via the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Britain viewed the Suez Canal as the "Lifeline of the Empire" because it allowed quicker access to its colonies in Asia and Africa. In 1911, Muslim intellectuals and politicians from throughout the Levant formed al-Fatat ("the Young Arab Society"), a small Arab nationalist club, in Paris. Its stated aim was "raising the level of the Arab nation to the level of modern nations." In the first few years of its existence, al-Fatat called for greater autonomy within a unified Ottoman state rather than Arab independence from the empire. Al-Fatat hosted the Arab Congress of 1913 in Paris, the purpose of which was to discuss desired reforms with other dissenting individuals from the Arab world. They also requested that Arab conscripts to the Ottoman army not be required to serve in non-Arab regions except in time of war. However, as the Ottoman authorities cracked down on the organization's activities and members, al-Fatat went underground and demanded the complete independence and unity of the Arab provinces. Nationalist individuals became more prominent during the waning years of Ottoman authority, but the idea of Arab nationalism had virtually no impact on the majority of Arabs as they considered themselves loyal subjects of the Ottoman Empire. The Sykes-Picot Agreement, officially known as the Asia Minor Agreement, was a secret agreement between the governments of the United Kingdom and France, with the assent of Russia, defining their proposed spheres of influence and control in the Middle East should the Triple Entente succeed in defeating the Ottoman Empire during World War I. The negotiation of the treaty occurred between November 1915 and March 1916. The agreement was concluded on 16 May 1916. The agreement effectively divided the Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire outside the Arabian peninsula into areas of future British and French control or influence. The terms were negotiated by the French diplomat François Georges-Picot and British Sir Mark Sykes.- published: 26 Nov 2013

Tunisians back Syria in war against Takfiri militants
Tunisians back Syria in war against Takfiri militants
The national movement to support Syrian resistance against the foreign-backed insurgency has gained momentum in Tunisia. An Arab Nationalist group has announced the formation of a new political entity that will gather all parties and associations to defend the resistance in Syria. Prominent Arab scholars and politicians have gathered in the capital Tunis to emphasize on Syria's role in defending the Muslim world against the alliance between the terrorist groups and Israel. Tunisian people also believe that the unity between Syria's leadership and people is the pushing force behind the successful campaign of the government troops. Tunisians now demand the return of Syria's Diplomatic mission to Tunis. Since the beginning of the unrest in Syria, experts have slammed West's neocolonial policy which aims to destabilize the resistance front against the Zionist project. Now that the Syrian Arab army is advancing in its war to defend the national sovereignty, Tunisians are also calling for the resumption of diplomatic ties with Damascus.- published: 30 Dec 2013
