A blistering winter blizzard covered large swaths of the Northeast U.S. in snow Thursday, canceling flights, shutting down highways and prompting schools to say they\'d be closed Friday.

More than 100 million people — almost one-third of the U.S. population — was in the path of a storm that started battering the Midwest and the East Coast with snow early Thursday. By late Thursday night, the National Weather Service said 21 in. of snow had fallen in a town just north of Boston. About 18 in. fell on parts of upstate New York, and New York City was bracing for heavy snowfall overnight and into Friday morning.

Today, after two weeks of fighting in South Sudan that is believed to have killed more than 1,000 people, representatives from both the government and rebel forces met in Ethiopia to discuss the possibility of peace.

But back in South Sudan, the fighting continued.

Both sides hope to gain territory to strengthen their position at the bargaining table. Rebels captured the city of Bor days ago; now the Sudan People\'s Liberation Army (SPLA) is trying to win it back. Bor is 125 slow, painful miles from the capital city of Juba—a trip made far quicker by helicopter. And so VICE flew to the front lines with the SPLA.

Fighting as militants defend their positions in Fallujah, Iraq

  • Updated: 06 Jan 2014
Subscribe to ITN News: http://goo.gl/zRYiYn Al Qaeda-linked militants and tribal fighters who have taken over parts of Fallujah, Iraq, have pledged to continue fighting Iraqi government. An unnamed commander of the anti-government Fallujah military council stated their aims on camera: "The revolutionaries of Fallujah tribes are resolved to punish those, the covetous, who are linked to the sectarian government." Al Qaeda's Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have been steadily tightening its grip in the vast Anbar province in recent months in a bid to create a Sunni Muslim state straddling the frontier with Syria. But last week's capture of positions in nearby Ramadi and large parts of Fallujah was the first time in years that Sunni insurgents have taken ground and held their positions for days. Iraqi government forces battling an al Qaeda offensive near the Syrian border launched an air strike on Ramadi city on Sunday killing 25 Islamist militants, according to local officials. However, in Fallujah, ISIL's task is being made made easier by disgruntled tribesmen who have joined its fight against the government. Report by Mark Morris. Rebels captured the city of Bor days ago; now the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) is trying to win it back. Bor is 125 slow, painful miles from the capital city of Juba—a trip made far quicker by helicopter. And so VICE flew to the front lines with the SPLA.
