Prime Minister David Cameron put forward his case for why Britain should step in: "The President of the United States, Barack Obama, he is a man who opposed the action in Iraq, no-one could in any way describe him as a president who wants to involve America in more wars in the Middle East. But he profoundly believes that an important red line has been crossed in an appalling way and that is why he supports action in this case". Cameron had originally recalled MPs to vote on an immediate military strike in Syria. After learning Labour would vote against the motion, he was forced to adapt it, saying he would wait for the report from UN inspectors before holding a second vote. Labour says it wants to see "compelling evidence" that the Assad regime was responsible for chemical warfare, and said weapons inspectors must be given more time. Labour leader, Ed Milliband told parliament: "Let them conclude their work for four days and then we will have to analyse scientifically with experts and then we will have to report to the security council for action, so the weapons inspectors are in the midst of their work and will be reporting in the next few days, that is why today could not have been the day when the house was asked to decide on military action." == (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/fr_FR/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Publication de euronews.== However Labour MPs said shortly before the debate that they would still vote against the government. It's believed up to 70 Tory MPs say they are "yet to be persuaded" by the coalition's case for military action. A second parliamentary vote on British involvement in military action will probably not happen until at least early next week, after the UN's weapons inspectors have published their report into last week's alleged "gas attack". British Parliament Grills Guardian Editor Over Snowden Leaks: 'Do You Love This Country?'
During hearings Tuesday before a British parliamentary committee, Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger defended his paper's decision to publish information obtained from leaked materials provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. A particularly difficult moment came when one MP asked Rusbridger, "Do you love this country?" MP Keith Vaz grilled Rusbridger on the specifics of how The Guardian obtained the material and what parts of it they decided to withhold from the public before turning to the bigger question of the editor's patriotism. "I love this country," he said. "Do you love this country?" "We live in a democracy and most of the people working on this story are British people who have families in this country, who love this country," Rusbridger responded, before expressing his "surprise" that he would be asked such a question as part of the hearing. "I'm slightly surprised to be asked the question but, yes, we are patriots and one of the things we are patriotic about is the nature of democracy, the nature of a free press and the fact that one can, in this country, discuss and report these things." Rusbridger also noted that The New York Times and Washington Post made "virtually identical" decisions when it came to the NSA coverage. He told the committee that he and his team spoke to 30 editors who were familiar with handling secret material and they all said they would have done the exact same thing The Guardian did.- published: 03 Dec 2013
