Fergus Ewing (born 23 September 1957) is the Scottish Government's Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism and the Scottish National Party (SNP) Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Inverness and Nairn.

He is the son of the veteran Scottish Nationalist Winnie Ewing (his father was also an SNP councillor) and has long been active in the SNP. Educated at Loretto, in Musselburgh, he studied law at the University of Glasgow where he was a member of the Glasgow University Scottish Nationalist Association. His late wife, Margaret Ewing, was the MSP for the neighbouring constituency of Moray until her death in March 2006. His sister, Annabelle Ewing, was the MP for Perth until the 2005 election.

He was elected to represent Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber in the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and he held on to the seat in 2003 and 2007. He, with his mother Winnie Ewing, abstained from the vote to abolish section 2A via the Ethical Standards in Public Life etc. (Scotland) Act 2000 but otherwise is viewed as being among the more moderate of the Scottish National Party MSPs, while his opposition to an outright ban on fox hunting also marked him out from many of his party colleagues. After the SNP's victory at the 2007 Scottish Parliament Election, Ewing was appointed as the Minister for Community Safety. After the SNP victory at the 2011 Scottish Parliament Election, he was appointed as the Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism, succeeding Jim Mather who had stood down as an MSP.

John Vincent "Vince" Cable (born 9 May 1943) is a British Liberal Democrat politician and economist who is currently the Business Secretary in the coalition cabinet of David Cameron. He has been Member of Parliament for Twickenham since 1997.

Cable studied economics at university and became an economic advisor to the Kenyan government in 1966. He was an advisor to the British government and to the Commonwealth Secretary-General in the 1970s and 1980s. Later, he served as Chief Economist for the oil company Shell from 1995 to 1997. In 1970s, Cable was active in the Labour Party and became a Glasgow councillor. However in 1982, he joined the Social Democratic Party which would later join the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats, and he unsuccessfully contested seats in the elections of 1983 (York), 1987 (York) and 1992 (Twickenham) until being elected as the MP for the London constituency of Twickenham in the 1997 general election.

Cable was the Liberal Democrats' senior economic spokesperson from 2003 to May 2010. He was elected Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Commons in March 2006, and following Sir Menzies Campbell's resignation, he was Acting Leader for two months—from October 2007 until the election of Nick Clegg. He resigned from his position as Deputy Leader in May 2010.
