M*League Division 1

The M*League, "M" for Marianas, is the top level football competition of the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association. It was an invitational league in the Northern Mariana Islands. The league has operated since 2005 and grew to include eight teams in the 2010 competition. On 2 August 2012 the competition was re-branded as the M*League following the suit of many other AFC national competitions.

In 2008, eight teams played in the league: In September 2012 the NMIFA officially launched a two tier completion. It was announced that in the inaugural season there would 5 teams in Division 1 and 4 teams in Division 2.

Malaysian League

The Malaysian League or also known as M-League (Liga Malaysia or Liga-M in Malay) is a terminology used to described the association football league in Malaysia. The terminology was mainly used to describe the league associated within Malaysian football league system.

History

Origin

The concept of an annual competition between the states in Malaysia goes back more than 95 years. In 1967 the Malaya Cup was replaced by the Malaysia Cup but the essentially amateur ethos continued until the Malaysian football league was introduced by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) in 1979 as a 'halfway house' towards full professional status.

Era of Malaysian League (1979-1989)

This football league competition involving the representative sides of the state football associations was first held in Malaysia in 1979. When it began, it was intended primarily as a qualifying tournament for the final knock-out stages of the Malaysia Cup. It was not until 1982 that a League Cup was introduced to recognise the winners of the preliminary stage as the league champions. Over the years, the league competition has gained important stature in its own right.

Malaysia Super League

Malaysia Super League (Liga Super Malaysia in Malay) most of the times referred as the Malaysian Super League is a professional football league and current top-tier league in Malaysian football league system. It operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Malaysia Premier League. It is also the football league with the highest average stadium attendance in South East Asia.

Malaysia Super League is contested by 12 clubs. Seasons run from February to October. The season starts in early February and lasts until late October, with a Ramadan break for a month. Teams play 22 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away), totalling 132 matches in the season. Most games are played on Saturdays, with a few games played during weekdays.

The competition was formed in 2004 following the decision by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to privatise the league, but it was not fully privatised. As a result, MSL Sendirian Berhad (or MSL Proprietary Limited) was created to oversee the marketing aspects of the league. In 2015, Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP) was created in the course of privatisation of the Malaysian football league system. The partnership saw all 24 teams of Malaysia Super League and Malaysia Premier League including FAM as the Managing Partner and MP & Silva as a special partner (FAM's global media and commercial advisor) to become stakeholders in the company. FMLLP owns, operates and runs five entities in Malaysian football under its jurisdiction, which include Malaysia Super League, the Malaysia Premier League, the FA Cup, the Malaysia Cup and the Charity Shield. It aims to transform and move Malaysian football forward.
