The Real Doctor Evil: Kim Jong Il's North Korea
Free for a limited time only: The secret life of the Former North Korea dictator! For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=17934 North Korea was identified as part of the axis of evil by George Bush. Taking an archive-based trip through North Korea's recent history, we find out it's probably a fair assessment. 'The Real Dr Evil' explores the rise of Kim Jong-il after his father, Kim II- sung's, death. His father, who is referred to as 'Great Leader' by North Korea, was a highly praised and well-respected leader -the founder of North Korea and commander of the fifth largest standing army in the world. Following the death of Kim II- sung, Kim Jong- il was left to fulfil the position of his father, however many doubted he had the right skills to follow in his footsteps. He was seen as a black sheep as rarely taken seriously. Everyone felt that Kim Jong- il would struggle to keep up to his father's standards. Were they right? 'The Real Dr Evil' follows the fascinating journey of Kim Jong- il -- from his childhood experiences, through his education, to his controversial leadership. When the great economic collapse of the mid-90s struck, Jong-il left many of his citizens to suffer. But as many began to lose hope, Jung-il began approaching many western countries for help. Many perceived this distress signal positively, others did not. Old Street Films/Rob Lemkin - Ref 2512- published: 17 Dec 2013

North Korean travel experts have slammed the BBC for putting local guides at risk, saying the country would hold them responsible for the actions of the journalists who posed as LSE students on a tour of the country. And two tour guides speaking to HuffPost UK said it was relatively easy for anyone to visit the country, and even obtain a journalist visa. The London School of Economics has expressed fury at BBC journalists who went undercover on a student trip to North Korea, claiming the corporation recklessly endangered students. The BBC claims the students were informed of the risks, necessary to take to get into the country. Huff Post UK- published: 15 Apr 2013

North Korean Camps - North Korea
November 2008 The only escapee of North Koreas most brutal prison camp has lived to tell us a story of unspeakable horror. Starved of food and common humanity, Shin proves that gulags are still a tragic reality. We were always hungry. Shins most vivid memory of his life in the camp is the constant hunger he felt, food made me escape, even if it was going to cost me my life. The only thing that interested me was the food. Before his escape three years ago, he didnt even know that a world existed beyond the barbed wires. Until then, his life had been one of torture, hard labour and complete isolation. My mother was supposed to inform on me and me on her. He believed she deserved her fate as he witnessed her execution. I blamed her. I had no real feelings as a kid. Shin didnt know love, only violence. Once the guards beat a little girl on the head so hard, she died the next day. He eventually escaped through a gap in a high-voltage fence. His charred legs still bear the scars. As horrible as it is, Shins story is not unique. Wang, himself a former prisoner, is a prominent writer on the subject. He believes that oppression in North Korea will keep increasing: The brutality of the system has grown to the point where Kim Jong Il now fears that he will suffer the same fate as Caucescu of Romania. He simply wants to kill all his enemies.- published: 24 Sep 2013

North Korean Motorcycle Diaries
North Korean Motorcycle Diaries
For the past decade, New Zealanders Joanne and Gareth Morgan have been living the semiretired lifestyle of their dreams, traveling around the world on motorcycles alongside a few of their closest friends. They've traversed all seven continents on their bikes, with routes as varied as Venice to Beijing, Florida to northern Alaska, and South Africa to London, just to name a few. Gareth funds his own trips, many of which he uses to pursue philanthropic endeavors, particularly in the social-investment space. He is able to do so with money he's made as an economist and investment manager—one who has earned the reputation for criticizing unethical practices in New Zealand's financial-services industry. In late August, the Morgans embarked on their most ambitious journey yet, at least physically. The real journey began years ago, when they decided they wanted to ride the Baekdudaegan, a mountain range that stretches the length of North and South Korea's shared peninsula. After countless hours of negotiation and coordination with both governments, they were granted permission. It was, the Morgans believe, the first time anyone's ever traveled through both countries like that since the partitioning of Korea in 1945. By making the trip they hoped to demonstrate how Koreans can come together over what they have in common. To symbolize this, the Morgans took some stones from Paektu, a holy mountain in the North, and brought them to Hallasan, a similarly sacred peak in the South. Joanne and Gareth shot the entirety of their trip, the footage from which they have graciously allowed us to cut into a short film that will premiere on VICE.com this month. In some ways, the footage makes the Korean coast look alternately like California, China, and Cuba. It's a beautiful view few foreigners have seen, and even if planning the road trip straight through the Demilitarized Zone required working within parameters set by the highly choreographed and restricted confines of North-South Korean diplomacy, this was a journey worth documenting from start to finish. Pyongyang Pressure Cooker - Inside Kim Jong Un's North Korea
What do the people of North Korea really think? Does the West give them a bad press? This report tries to find out. North Korea has always created a carefully choreographed image of itself, but have the Western media also created a false picture of life there? With rare access, this report tries to answer that question. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65838&bid;=2 "They want to be more open. But they have been let down too many times by overseas journalists", says Ray Ferguson, of the Australia-North Korea Friendship Association. He claims that the regime is making real efforts to reach out. But heavy restrictions are still placed on journalists filming there. And a quick interview with a member of the public shows the pressure to tow the official line. "The U.S. imperialist invaders, we must drive them out!" Asking the guide whether people are "pretending" provokes the anxious response: "Don't use that word!" But Ray remains hopeful of change: "At least if you're engaging it creates a groundwork for better relations..". SBS- published: 16 Sep 2013

UN investigation uncovers horrifying truth about North Korea's human rights abuses
Breaking the Silence: The secrets of the labour camps being revealed by a UN inquiry into North Korean human rights abuses. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=66296&bid;=2 The stories of secret labour camps have long contradicted North Korea's displays of national unity. Now for the first time ever, a UN inquiry on human rights abuses hears the stories it doesn't want told. "In North Korea anyone who enters a prison is regarded as an animal", testifies Kim Song Ju, a labour camp survivor. NK denies their existence but satellite images and extremely rare footage of prisoners in a desolate landscape prove otherwise. Testimonies of defectors add horrifying detail to the picture of life and death. "In one corner of the train station there was always a pile of dead bodies", recalls former soldier Kim Joo-Il. "Many people died of starvation and were just left there." Having escaped the regime he now publishes a newspaper countering Pyongyang propaganda. Another witness at the Inquiry, who was sold into marriage in China by human traffickers only to be sent to a labour camp, believes that speaking out about the crimes "is the only way human rights in North Korea will improve". Cold Warzone: North Korea's Militarized Society
The Juche Era: An uncharted journey through the heart of isolationist North Korea. For downloads and more information visit http://www.journeyman.tv/18114/documentaries/the-juche-era.html Just what does make North Korea tick? In every sense the country and its people still see themselves at war. Isolated and ostracised for decades, everything in this quirky place is choreographed to display maximum unity and strength. Produced by Bulgarian TV this unseen film manages to travel throughout the country. It provides an enthralling and unique behind the scenes view of a country which rarely allows outsiders to see inside. Two million troops still face each other along the border between North and South Korea. 'We have enough troops and military hardware to withstand a strike from the South and to win'. Huge billboards and loudspeakers shout invective at the other side. The cruel ferocity of the Korean war left the North scarred and in a permanent state of defensive hostility. Under thousands of umbrellas in the Pyongyang rain, North Koreans endlessly practise their parades. They are showing faith in the idea of Juche, created by Kim Il- Sung. Juche means to rely on your own strength. Kim's son Kim Jong-Il succeeded him and has continued with his father's bizarre philosophies. All Koreans must take part in the colourful ceremonies which have come to define this country in foreign eyes. Every walk of life is invaded by Songun, or military orientated doctrine. At a nursery school a special syllabus imparts the spirit of survival, with constant reference to their leader. Some may progress to Man Gjun De Military School, the most elite in Pyongyang. The school turns out some of the most committed officers in the world, ready to 'strike back at anyone who attacks our country'. Half of North Korea's budget goes on military spending. It turns a handsome profit (reputedly half a billion dollars annually) exporting missiles to the Middle East. Life in Pyongyang struggles to emerge from the shadows of the great granite monoliths. Only with hidden cameras is it possible to see inside supermarkets for ordinary Koreans; 'why would you want to go in there'; the guide insistently demands to every request. Worker brigades march to work, spade in hand, glorifying their leader in song. In local stores, each person is allotted goods in a strictly controlled system: shoes, a suit, a lamp. Though the poster on the wall reads; 'We support our dear leader in producing soy milk!', the bags on the floor read UNICEF. North Korea is fed mainly by foreign humanitarian aid, a million tonnes of it each year. Citizens supplement their daily food intake by fishing in the Taedong River. In the 1990's North Koreans were starving. Today, even in the countryside, they have food. They can grow crops in their small gardens to sell at market, unofficially (it does not reflect the ideals of Juche but has quietly been allowed to develop to avoid the starvation prevalent in the 90's). But there is no escaping the ever present State: even in the fields loudspeakers call for the populace to be ready to fight and every family is called on to prepare their children for the army. During a very unusual - for a foreigner - visit to ordinary Korean homes, we find a basic but secure existence -- home grown vegetables and fish from the river stock the fridge. They might appear to have the basic essentials but the family clearly remains in the same state of denial as everyone else in this odd country. 'My greatest dream is for the Juche ideals to succeed in every part of the world', states the 27 year old daughter of the household. There are 23 million people in this atheist State with a heavily fortified 250 mile border to the South with South Korea. To the north, there is a 900 mile border with China and a short section with Russia. NK is widely recognised as the most secretive nation in the world. All North Korea is dominated by the Kim family, and today by Kim Jung-Il. The thoughts and writings of his father, Kim Il Sung control all of society and stand in direct conflict with the freedoms of the Gospel. There is widespread abuse of believers, extensive famine in rural areas, a moribund economy and zero toleration of criticism. From Christian Solidarity Worldwide.
