Former Supertramp lead singer and co-founder Roger Hodgson wrote and composed this song by himself. He has talked about how when he composed it he always saw it being played with an orchestra. So, seeing it with an orchestra, we are seeing it the way the composer originally intended it. This epic is on the album "Even in the Quietest Moments." This video is a slideshow that I put together after hearing the song for the first time on the radio. It struck a chord in me and I wanted to put images to the lyrics that complimented the feelings that I personally took away from hearing it. The sequence is sort of my own travels and revelations, independent from representing Mr. Hodgson and Supertramp. But, I hope that the general idea and message of trying to walk the path of self discovery is on point. Lyrics: When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful, a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical. And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily, joyfully, playfully watching me. But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical. And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical. There are times when all the world's asleep, the questions run too deep for such a simple man. Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am. Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, liberal, fanatical, criminal. This was shot mostly on a Canon 5D Mark III, at 24fps(1080p), and all the slow motion was done at 60fps(720p). For all the static shots, those were shot with a Canon 5D Mark II. There was one POV shot in the video, that was done with a GoPro2, at 60fps. The lenses used were a Canon 16-35mm F/2.8L, and a Canon 70-200mm F/2.8L. All the daytime stuff was shot at an ISO of 100, generally at a 1/4000 of a shutter, with an aperture of F/2.8. The nighttime stuff was shot mostly at ISO 1600, F/2.8, and a shutter speed of 1/30. Roger Hodgson South America 2012 Tour http://www.rogerhodgson.com/documents/tour.html "Fools Overture" is the closing track from Supertramp's 1977 album Even in the Quietest Moments. Written and song by guitarist, keyboard player, singer and songwriter Roger Hodgson, the song tells about World War II England and the lessons learned from it. The song, which is over 10 minutes long, is a collage of progressive instrumentation and sound samples. First there are excerpts of Winston Churchill's famous June 4, 1940 House of Commons speech regarding England's involvement in World War II ("Never Surrender"), and later sounds of police cars and church bells are heard. The flageolet-sounding instrument plays an excerpt from Gustav Holst's "Venus", from his orchestral suite The Planets. There is also a reading of the first verse of William Blake's poem "And did those feet in ancient time" (more commonly known as "Jerusalem"), ended by a very short sample of the band's song "Dreamer". Its writing credits are given to Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson,Although Roger and Rick shared joint writer credit throughout their years together with Supertramp, they actually wrote separately. It is easy to tell the composer of the songs as Roger sings all the songs he wrote, and Rick sings the songs he wrote. The songs Roger sings that are often referred to as Supertramp songs are songs that Roger wrote and composed alone - that is how he creates music. Even though Roger and Rick shared writing credit, they each wrote and composed separately. Roger wrote many of the band's hits while he was still in his teens, before he even met Rick. When Roger was with Supertramp, he would make a demo of the song and bring it to the band for them to learn their parts. Supertramp as a band never wrote and composed together. There were only two songwriters for the band. The songs Roger sings lead vocals on are the ones he composed the music and lyrics for, and the songs Rick sings lead vocals on are the ones that he wrote. Cofounder of Supertramp Roger Hodgson is the writer & composer of Take the Long Way Home. Roger & Rick wrote songs separately. Basically who sings the song on the album is the one who wrote the song. Roger has written many of the biggest hit songs of Supertramp from The Logical Song , Dreamer, Give a Little Bit, It's Raining Again, Hide in Your Shell to name a few.
