United States National Security Agency (NSA) | FULL VIDEO
The National Security Agency (NSA) is the main producer and manager of signals intelligence for the United States. Estimated to be one of the largest of U.S. intelligence organizations in terms of personnel and budget,[5][7] the NSA operates under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense and reports to the Director of National Intelligence. The NSA is tasked with the global monitoring, collection, decoding, translation and analysis of information and data for foreign intelligence and counterintelligence purposes, including surveillance of targeted individuals on U.S. soil. The agency is authorized to accomplish its mission through clandestine means,[8] among which is bugging electronic systems[9] and allegedly engaging in sabotage through subversive software.[10][11] The NSA is also responsible for the protection of U.S. government communications and information systems.[12] As part of the growing practice of mass surveillance in the United States, the NSA collects and stores all phone records of all American citizens.[13] Unlike the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), both of which specialize primarily in foreign human espionage, the NSA has no authority to conduct human-source intelligence gathering, although it is often portrayed so in popular culture. Instead, the NSA is entrusted with coordination and deconfliction of SIGINT components of otherwise non-SIGINT government organizations, which are prevented by law from engaging in such activities without the approval of the NSA via the Defense Secretary.[14] As part of these streamlining responsibilities, the agency has a co-located organization called the Central Security Service (CSS), which was created to facilitate cooperation between NSA and other U.S. military cryptanalysis components. Additionally, the NSA Director simultaneously serves as the Commander of the United States Cyber Command and as Chief of the Central Security Service. e predecessor of the National Security Agency was the Armed Forces Security Agency (AFSA), created on May 20, 1949.[15] This organization was originally established within the U.S. Department of Defense under the command of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.[15] The AFSA was to direct Department of Defense communications and electronic intelligence activities, except those of U.S. military intelligence units.[15] AFSA failed to achieve a centralized communications intelligence mechanism, and failed to coordinate with civilian agencies that shared its interests (the Department of State, CIA, and FBI).[15] In December 1951, President Harry S. Truman ordered a study to correct AFSA's failures. Six months later, the four members finished and issued the Brownell Report, which criticized AFSA, strengthened it and resulted in its redesignation as the National Security Agency.[16] The agency was formally established by Truman in a memorandum of October 24, 1952, that revised National Security Council Intelligence Directive (NSCID) 9.[17] Truman's memo was later declassified.[17]- published: 30 Oct 2013

National Security Agency Whistleblower William Binney on Growing State Surveillance
In his first television interview since he resigned from the National Security Agency over the its domestic surveillance program, William Binney discusses the NSA’s massive power to spy on Americans and why the FBI raided his home after he became a whistleblower. Binney was a key source for investigative journalist James Bamford’s recent exposé in Wired Magazine about how the NSA is quietly building the largest spy center in the country in Bluffdale, Utah. The Utah spy center will contain near-bottomless databases to store all forms of communication collected by the agency including private emails, cell phone calls and Google searches and other personal data.
Binney served in the NSA for over 30 years, including a time as technical director of the NSA’s World Geopolitical and Military Analysis Reporting Group. Since retiring from the NSA in 2001 he has warned that the NSA’s data-mining program has become so vast that it could “create an Orwellian state.” Today marks the first time Binney has spoken on national television about NSA surveillance.

The Teufelsberg (German for Devil's Mountain) is a hill in Berlin, in the Grunewald locality of former West Berlin. It rises about 80 metres (260 ft) above the surrounding Brandenburg plain, more precisely the north of Berlin's Grunewald Forest. It was named after the Teufelssee (i.e. Devil's lake) in its southerly vicinity.
It is an artificial hill with a curious history: It was heaped up after the Second World War from part of the rubble of Berlin, approximately 75,000,000 m3 (98,000,000 cu yd) all over the city, during the following twenty years as the city was cleared and rebuilt.
While part of the rubble from destroyed quarters in East Berlin was deposited outside the city boundary, all the debris from West Berlin had to be dumped within the western boundary.
Its origin does not in itself make Teufelsberg unique, as there are many similar man-made rubble mounds in Germany and other war-torn cities of Europe. The curiousness begins with what is buried underneath the hill: the never completed Nazi military-technical college (Wehrtechnische Fakultät) designed by Albert Speer. The Allies tried using explosives to demolish the school, but it was so sturdy that covering it with debris turned out to be easier. In June 1950 the West Berlin Magistrate decided to open a new rubble deposal on that site. The deposal was planned for 12,000,000 m3 (16,000,000 cu yd).
The US National Security Agency (NSA) built one of its largest listening stations on top of the hill, rumored to be part of the global ECHELON intelligence gathering network. "The Hill", as it was known colloquially by the many American soldiers who worked there around the clock and who commuted there from their quarters in the American Sector, was located in the British Sector. Prior to establishing the first permanent buildings there in the very late 1950s, Mobile Allied listening units had driven to various other locales throughout West Berlin hoping to gain the best vantage point for listening to Soviet, East German, and other Warsaw Pact nations military traffic. It was also used to supervise the West Berlin Air Corridors. One such unit drove to the top of Teufelsberg and discovered a marked improvement in listening ability. This discovery eventually led to a large structure being built atop the hill, which would come to be run by the NSA (National Security Agency). At the request of US government, the ski lifts were removed because they allegedly disturbed the signals. The station continued to operate until the fall of East Germany and the Berlin Wall, but after that the station was closed and the equipment removed. The buildings and radar domes still remain in place.

In July 2013 I stayed for 10 days in Berlin. After finishing some jobs, meeting up with my brother and exploring the city I wanted to make another Magic Lantern RAW test. The funny thing is, in my appartment was a picture of the radar station of which I was absolutely curious about from the beginning but nobody could tell me where I could find it. Hungry for a good rooftop location I began the research for a good place for the next test - and I found it!
A blogpost about abandoned places from 2010 gave hints how to access the former NSA ground – sneak around the security at the front and go right through the hole in the fence at the back oft the station. But having a decent bag of equipment and a female model - this was not an option. The blogpost’s comments went on till April 2013 – luckily some abandoned places hunters still went there and wrote about having no problems at all and/or getting busted by the police.
Today this property belongs to a group of people and they offer tours around the former NSA field station on the highest hill in West Berlin. After a couple of phonecalls I managed to get permission to make this video – success!

Tech Talk: Steve Blank -- "The Secret History of Silicon Valley: How Stanford & the CIA/NSA Built the Valley We Know Today"
ABSTRACT
How much does an average engineer know about the history of the place he/she works in---Silicon Valley? Come and test your knowledge. Silicon Valley entrepreneur and professor Steve Blank will talk about how World War II set the stage for the creation and explosive growth of Silicon Valley, and the role of Frederick Terman and Stanford in working with government agencies (including the CIA and the National Security Agency) to set up companies in this area that sparked the creation of hundreds of other enterprises.
BIOGRAPHY
After 21 years in 8 high technology companies, Steve retired in 1999. He co-founded his last company, E.piphany, in his living room in 1996. His other startups include two semiconductor companies, Zilog and MIPS Computers, a workstation company Convergent Technologies, a consulting stint for a graphics hardware/software spinout Pixar, a supercomputer firm, Ardent, a computer peripheral supplier, SuperMac, a military intelligence systems supplier, ESL and a video game company, Rocket Science Games.
Steve moved from being an entrepreneur to teaching entrepreneurship to both undergraduate and graduate students at U.C. Berkeley, Stanford University and the Columbia University/Berkeley Joint Executive MBA program. In 2009, he was awarded the Stanford University Undergraduate Teaching Award in the department of Management Science and Engineering. The same year, the San Jose Mercury News listed him as one of the "10 Influencers in Silicon Valley". In 2010, Steve was awarded the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley Haas School of Business.
In 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Steve to serve on the California Coastal Commission, the public body which regulates land use and public access on the California coast. In 2009, he became a trustee of U.C. Santa Cruz and joined the board of the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV). In 2010, Steve was appointed to the Expert Advisory Panel for the California Ocean Protection Council.
