South Sudan\'s warring parties were set to open peace talks in Ethiopia aimed at bringing an end to a nearly three-week-old civil war, amid reports of an imminent showdown between government and rebel forces in the state of Jonglei. Government and rebel officials confirmed their negotiating teams were preparing to fly to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, and diplomats said they expected negotiations on a possible ceasefire to begin later on Wednesday.

http://www.euronews.com/2014/01/02/schumacher-fresh-reports-about-accident-as-his-45th-birthday-nears
On the eve of his 45th birthday on Friday, Michael Schumacher is still fighting for his life in hospital.

His wife Corinna and former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt were back at the motor racing legend\'s bedside today. Ex-Formula one champion Niki Lauda and Arsenal football club have sent some of the latest messages of support.

Schumacher suffered severe head injuries in Sunday\'s accident in which German press reports say he was using rented skis.

The Bild newspaper reports that he helped the daughter of a friend who had fallen in the snow, before his own crash in the Alpine resort of Meribel.

It speculates that he may have been distracted by the binding on his boot and says the helicopter airlifting him to hospital stopped on the way so that a tube could be inserted to help his breathing.

With many claims unconfirmed, French authorities continue to investigate.

Schumacher: Fresh reports about accident, as his 45th birthday nears
1:01
http://learningenglish.voanews.com | http://youtube.com/voalearningenglish

From VOA Learning English, this is the Health Report. The World Health Organization says there has been an increase in the number of children in developing countries who weigh too much. In African countries, the WHO says the number of overweight or obese children is two times as high as it was 20 years ago. Around the world, about 43 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2011. Doctors use height, weight and age to measure whether a person is underweight, normal, overweight or obese. Overweight and obese children are more likely to become overweight and obese adults. They are also at risk of developing health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Francesco Branca is the director of the WHO Department of Nutrition for Health and Development. He says governments should consider providing vitamins for children. And they should have policies on how food is marketed to children. But reducing the number of overweight children will not be easy. The goal is difficult to meet, even in wealthy countries. Experts say lowering obesity rates is especially complex in countries that also have high rates of infectious diseases. But the WHO has some basic solutions. The organization says people should eat less fat, sugar, salt and processed food. This can be replaced with more fruits and vegetables and increased physical activity. These goals are especially important for children. The WHO also says mothers should breastfeed their babies for at least the first six months, if possible. The current goal for the WHO\'s World Health Assembly is to prevent any increase in the percentage of overweight children in the next 12 years. For VOA Learning English, I\'m Alex Villarreal.

South Sudan's warring parties were set to open peace talks in Ethiopia aimed at bringing an end to a nearly three-week-old civil war, amid reports of an imminent showdown between government and rebel forces in the state of Jonglei. Government and rebel officials confirmed their negotiating teams were preparing to fly to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, and diplomats said they expected negotiations on a possible ceasefire to begin later on Wednesday.

http://www.euronews.com/ Three weeks after what was seen as the provocative launch of a long-range rocket, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called for an end to the confrontation with South Korea. In a rare New Year speech, Kim said - in the past - inter-Korean relations had led to "nothing but war". Tensions remain high between Pyongyang and Seoul despite previous efforts to build ties following their three year war in the 1950s. During his speech, Kim also said that becoming an "economic power" would be a key priority. But there was no mention of the North's nuclear ambitions which have antagonised its neighbours and the West. The call for better relations comes days after South Koreans elected Park Geun-hye as their new president. North Korea attempted to assassinate her father at the height of their Cold War confrontation. His wife Corinna and former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt were back at the motor racing legend's bedside today. Ex-Formula one champion Niki Lauda and Arsenal football club have sent some of the latest messages of support. Schumacher suffered severe head injuries in Sunday's accident in which German press reports say he was using rented skis. Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

Obesity Rises Among Children in Developing Countries

http://learningenglish.voanews.com | http://youtube.com/voalearningenglish From VOA Learning English, this is the Health Report. The current goal for the WHO's World Health Assembly is to prevent any increase in the percentage of overweight children in the next 12 years. For VOA Learning English, I'm Alex Villarreal.
