Must watch - How riot police should be doing it! (South Korea)

South Korean riot police use ancient Roman warfare tactics to control crowds. Information about tactics can be derived from accounts of battles, but the very military manuals known to have existed and to have been used extensively by commanders, have not survived. Perhaps the greatest loss is the book of Sextus Julius Frontinus. But parts of his work were incorporated in the records of the historian Vegetius. The importance of the choice of ground is pointed out. There is an advantage of height over the enemy and if you are pitting infantry against cavalry, the rougher the ground the better. The sun should be behind you to dazzle the enemy. If there is strong wind it should blow away from you, giving advantage to your missiles and blinding the enemy with dust. In the battle line, each man should have three feet of space, while the distance between the ranks is given as six feet. Thus 10'000 men can be placed in a rectangle about 1'500 yards by twelve yards, and it was advised not to extend the line beyond that. The normal arrangement was to place the infantry in the centre and the cavalry on the wings. The function of the latter was to prevent the centre from being outflanked and once the battle turned and the enemy started to retreat the cavalry moved forward and cut them down. - Horsemen were always a secondary force in ancient warfare, the main fighting being done by the infantry. It was recommended that if your cavalry was weak it was to be stiffened with lightly armed foot soldiers. Vegetius also stresses the need for adequate reserves. These could prevent an enemy from trying to envelope one's own forces, or could fend off enemy cavalry attacking the rear of the infantry. Alternatively, they could themselves move to the sides and perform an enveloping manoeuver against an opponent. The position to be taken up by the commander was normally on the right wing. The tortoise was a essentially defensive formation by which the legionaries would hold their shields overhead, except for the front rows, thereby creating a kind of shell-like armour shielding them against missiles from the front or above.

KCIJ(Korea Center for Investigative Journalism) exposed the National Intelligence Service(NIS), South Korea's spy agency illegally did political campaigning and manipulated public opinion during presidential election in 2012. KCIJ found out that the spy agency had formed secretive cyber psychological warfare unit, created at least 660 Twitter accounts. KCIJ identified those accounts posted or re-tweeted 280,000 tweets usually criticising the opposition candidates for helping the ruling party candidate.

South Korean President Declines Direct Action on Yen Fall

[Park Geun-hye, South Korean President]: "Companies can turn this crisis into an opportunity by cutting costs and restructuring themselves, while exploring overseas markets more aggressively." The yen's value against the won fell by more than 30 percent over the past two years, reaching its weakest point in more than five years last week. Analysts say it will hurt South Korean exporters competing with the Japanese, for products ranging from cars and ships to home appliances. Park also expresses concerns over tensions with Japan after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to a controversial war shrine, seen by critics as a symbol of Tokyo's wartime aggression. However, she says she has not ruled out a summit with Abe, which should help the development of ties between the two countries. Regarding the communist neighbor North Korea, Park proposed to hold reunions for separated families divided by the border between the South and North. [Park Geun-hye, South Korean President]: "Last year, it was truly regrettable that the family reunion was cancelled with four days to go. I hope that elderly members of separated families will be allowed to reunite around Lunar New Year, so that the wounds in their hearts can be healed." North Korea executes 80 in brutal public killings: South Korean report

At least 80 people are said to have been executed in North Korea in a series of simultaneous public slaughters in seven different cities on November 3, according to a South Korean newspaper. The report in the JoongAng Daily cites a single unnamed source whose claims have been backed by one group representing North Korean defectors. Authorities reportedly machine-gunned eight bound and hooded prisoners in front of a crowd of 10,000 in a 30,000-capacity sports stadium in the port city of Wonsan. The bodies were so badly show up they were hard to identify afterwards, according to the source. The source believes their crimes mainly involved watching South Korean videos, being in possession of bibles and of distributing pornography. In September, Japan's Asahi Shimbun reported that nine members of the Unhasu Orchestra were executed for making sextapes and then selling them.
