North Korean travel experts have slammed the BBC for putting local guides at risk, saying the country would hold them responsible for the actions of the journalists who posed as LSE students on a tour of the country. And two tour guides speaking to HuffPost UK said it was relatively easy for anyone to visit the country, and even obtain a journalist visa. The London School of Economics has expressed fury at BBC journalists who went undercover on a student trip to North Korea, claiming the corporation recklessly endangered students. The BBC claims the students were informed of the risks, necessary to take to get into the country. Huff Post UK- published: 15 Apr 2013

North Korean Camps - North Korea
November 2008 The only escapee of North Koreas most brutal prison camp has lived to tell us a story of unspeakable horror. Starved of food and common humanity, Shin proves that gulags are still a tragic reality. We were always hungry. Shins most vivid memory of his life in the camp is the constant hunger he felt, food made me escape, even if it was going to cost me my life. The only thing that interested me was the food. Before his escape three years ago, he didnt even know that a world existed beyond the barbed wires. Until then, his life had been one of torture, hard labour and complete isolation. My mother was supposed to inform on me and me on her. He believed she deserved her fate as he witnessed her execution. I blamed her. I had no real feelings as a kid. Shin didnt know love, only violence. Once the guards beat a little girl on the head so hard, she died the next day. He eventually escaped through a gap in a high-voltage fence. His charred legs still bear the scars. As horrible as it is, Shins story is not unique. Wang, himself a former prisoner, is a prominent writer on the subject. He believes that oppression in North Korea will keep increasing: The brutality of the system has grown to the point where Kim Jong Il now fears that he will suffer the same fate as Caucescu of Romania. He simply wants to kill all his enemies.- published: 24 Sep 2013

Subscribe:http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=arirangtoday -Testimony of a North Korean female defector in her 20s A story of a North Korean defector who settled down in South Korea was published in Korean in October. Kim Eun-joo, a college student in her 20s is the heroine of the book titled "The last will of an 11-year-old girl." She already published a book on her defecting story in French, creating a sensation from Europe. To the eyes of ordinary people, the nine years of defecting procedure appears to be a very dangerous experience, but the very person who actually defected from the North says it was a relatively normal defecting process. Any hardships from the defection seemed better than the life in North Korea. If so, what do North Korean defectors have to go through to defect from the North? And why do they have to defect from the North and go through such a dangerous process? Kim Eun-joo, a defector in her 20s, gives us the lively testimony of her defection process and the reason she had to defect.- published: 08 Nov 2013

Pyongyang Pressure Cooker - Inside Kim Jong Un's North Korea
What do the people of North Korea really think? Does the West give them a bad press? This report tries to find out. North Korea has always created a carefully choreographed image of itself, but have the Western media also created a false picture of life there? With rare access, this report tries to answer that question. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65838&bid;=2 "They want to be more open. But they have been let down too many times by overseas journalists", says Ray Ferguson, of the Australia-North Korea Friendship Association. He claims that the regime is making real efforts to reach out. But heavy restrictions are still placed on journalists filming there. And a quick interview with a member of the public shows the pressure to tow the official line. "The U.S. imperialist invaders, we must drive them out!" Asking the guide whether people are "pretending" provokes the anxious response: "Don't use that word!" But Ray remains hopeful of change: "At least if you're engaging it creates a groundwork for better relations..". SBS- published: 16 Sep 2013

I was lucky enough to interact with a North Korean, and film it!
Spending time with the hairdresser, Kim Hye-Sun was unlike spending time with any of the usual North Koreans you get to meet. She was charming and quirky. For the first time, I felt like I was seeing something real, that wasn't shown to me.

Spin (by Max Hattler)
"Has it really been over 2½ years since Max Hattler first teased us with his toy soldier animation Spin? Well like an early choreographed Christmas present Max’s conflict spectacle finally makes its way online to entertain us." Directors Notes (17 Dec 2012)
FINALLY ONLINE, THE FULL VERSION OF MAX HATTLER'S MULTI-AWARD WINNING 'SPIN' (2010)
Full info and credits: http://www.maxhattler.com/spin
"Utilising a Busby Berkeley-style song and dance routine, with CGI toy soldiers as the players, Hattler succeeds brilliantly in blurring the lines between conflict and entertainment in a piece laced with satire. One foot wrong, and a film like this can quickly take the wrong turn into mawkish territory. But Hattler’s Spin triumphs were so many fail; engaging an audience and hitting them with the knock-out blow of a wake-up call." The Double Negative (2012)
"Max Hattler's fantastically bizarre, deliciously satirical Spin, a madcap cross between Singin' in the Rain (1952), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and A Town Called Panic (2009) the film portrays a synchronized group of dancing toy soldiers as they melt, maim and gun each other down." Cine Vue (2011)
"Animator Max Hattler, based in London and Germany, has been busy over the last couple of years creating his characteristically precise and geometric works that in some ways recall the kaleidoscopic choreography of Busby Berkley. Some of his best works unite the visual precision with military themes for a deft critique of totalizing control. His 2005 short, Collision, for example, brings together the visual iconography of Islam and the US, while Spin, from 2010, flips small military figures into spinning dervishes that again, create patterns that underscore the violence implicit in the images." Blur and Sharpen (2012)
"Spin is synchronised swimming for toy soldiers. Aficionados of plastic infantrymen will recognise them almost instantly, and while they've here been rendered such that they can move their limbs, some positional changes see them swapped for another. Here, they are green and black, the living-room invading menace of the tan toy soldiers perhaps being left for a sequel. The sometimes jaunty music from Eclectic works well with Max Hattler's visuals, all creating an entertaining spectacle. It's dark in places, intentionally so, and that's also to the credit of those involved. Perhaps the only note is that among the various GIs and Wehrmacht are some soldiers that appear in fact to be a police SWAT team - what one suspects is actually a battering ram is treated as if it were a giant Roman candle. That may be an artifact of childhood imagination, however, and given how many bricks substituted for firearms before Lego, if you will, bit the bullet, it's totally forgiveable. Watching Spin does in some ways recall the pageantry of fascism, the Nuhremberg rallies and North Korean stadium displays, though again that's an important element - divorced of ideology such efforts still glorify something, and the very notion of a toy soldier raises all sorts of questions. Spin doesn't attempt to answer any of them, nor should it - sometimes the mere act of asking questions is enough, and Spin manages that amply." Eye For Film (2010)
"The development of Spin has led to Hattler researching political parades and mass rallies, alongside kaleidoscopic Hollywood dance routines: ‘I’ve been looking at work by Leni Riefenstahl, and the escapist vision of Busby Berkeley. I’ve also been considering Fordism and the division of labour, where individuals create a bigger pattern. I’m interested in the human as ornament. What happens when you replicate a figure a million times?’ With this correlation of dance troupes and military troops, Spin presents a constantly self-replenishing supply of plastic toy soldiers, whose uniform movements shift from dizzying eye-candy patterns into increasingly threatening displays, all to a soundtrack of 1940s big band music." *** Nominated for the GERMAN WEB VIDEO AWARD 2013 ***
ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE NORTH is a short documentary about a unique visit of the Munich Chamber Orchestra (MKO) to Pyongyang, North Korea.
In addition to joint orchestra rehearsals at the Pyongyang Kim Won Gyun Conservatory, the MKO conducted one-to-one chamber music classes with North Korean students. After 3 days of rehearsals the German-Korean ensemble performed in a closing concert at the conservatory.
The Goethe Institut Korea arranged this cross-cultural encounter to one of the most internationally isolated places in the world. Nils Clauss was kindly invited to join and document this special event in form of a short documentary.
