Jock Mahoney (February 7, 1919 – December 14, 1989) was an American actor and stuntman of Irish, French, and Cherokee ancestry. Born Jacques O'Mahoney, he was credited variously as Jock Mahoney, Jack O'Mahoney or Jock O'Mahoney. He starred in two television series, both westerns. He played Tarzan in two feature films and was associated in various capacities with several other Tarzan productions.

Early life and career[link]

Mahoney was born in Chicago but was raised in Davenport, Iowa. He entered the University of Iowa, but dropped out to enlist in the United States Marine Corps when World War II began. He served as both a pilot and a flying instructor. After his discharge, he moved to Los Angeles and was a horsebreeder for a time. However, he soon became a movie stuntman, doubling for actors Gregory Peck, Errol Flynn, and John Wayne. Director Vincent Sherman recalled staging the climactic fight scene in the 1948 film Adventures of Don Juan, and finding only one Hollywood stuntman who was willing to leap from a high staircase in the scene. The man was Mahoney, who demanded and received $1,000 for the dangerous stunt.

Billed as Jacques O'Mahoney in the late 1940s, he performed in several features, shorts, and serials for Columbia Pictures. He succeeded stuntman Ted Mapes as the double for Charles Starrett in the Durango Kid western series. The Durango Kid often wore a mask, which enabled Mahoney to replace Starrett in the action scenes. Mahoney's daring stunts made it seem that the older Starrett grew, the more athletic he became.

Stuntman and actor[link]

Like many Columbia contract players, Mahoney worked in the studio's two-reel comedies. Beginning in 1947, writer-director Edward Bernds cast Mahoney in slapstick comedies starring The Three Stooges. Mahoney had large speaking roles in these films, and often played his scenes for laughs. Striking a dauntless, heroic pose, Mahoney would suddenly get clumsy, tripping over something or taking sprawling pratfalls. Columbia management noticed Mahoney's acting skills and gave him starring roles in adventure serials, beginning in 1950.

Cowboy star Gene Autry, then working at Columbia, hired Mahoney to star in a television series. Autry's Flying A Productions filmed seventy-nine half-hour episodes of The Range Rider from 1951 to 1953 and 1959 (a lost episode shown six years after the series ended). He was billed as Jack Mahoney. The character had no name other than Range Rider. His series co-star was Dick Jones, playing the role of Dick West

In the 1958 western Money, Women and Guns, Mahoney played the starring role. The film also starred Kim Hunter.

For the 1958 television season, he starred in the popular cult western Yancy Derringer series for thirty-four episodes. Yancy Derringer was a gentleman adventurer living in New Orleans, Louisiana, after the Civil War with a Pawnee Indian sidekick named Pahoo Katchewa ('pa-who-kaht'-chee-wah') ("Wolf Who Stands in Water") who did not speak, played by X Brands.

Tarzan films[link]

In 1948, Mahoney auditioned to play Tarzan after the departure of Johnny Weissmuller, but the role went to Lex Barker.

In 1960, he appeared as Coy Banton, a villain in Tarzan the Magnificent, starring Gordon Scott. His strong presence, work ethic, and lean (6 foot 4 inch, 220 pound) frame impressed producer Sy Weintraub who wanted a "new look" for the fabled apeman.

In 1962, Mahoney became the thirteenth actor to portray Tarzan when he appeared in Tarzan Goes to India, shot on location in India. A year later, he again played the role in Tarzan's Three Challenges, shot in Thailand. When this film was released, Mahoney, at 44, became the oldest actor to play the jungle king, a record that still stands. Dysentery and dengue fever plagued Mahoney during the shoot in the Thai jungles, and he plummeted to 175 pounds. It took him a year and a half to regain his health.

Owing to his health problems and the fact that producer Weintraub had decided to go for a "younger look" for the apeman, his contract was mutually dissolved.

Television guest roles[link]

In 1960 he starred in the Rawhide episode Incident of the Sharpshooter. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he appeared in television guest-starring roles on shows such as Batman, the Ron Ely Tarzan series (again playing a villain), Hawaii Five-O, Laramie, and The Streets of San Francisco. In 1973, he suffered a stroke while filming an episode of Kung Fu, but recovered, though he sometimes had to use a wheelchair thereafter.

Later career and death[link]

In 1981, Mahoney returned to the Tarzan film series as the stunt coordinator on the John Derek-directed remake of Tarzan, the Ape Man. He was billed as "Jack O'Mahoney." He also made guest appearances on the television shows B.J. and the Bear and The Fall Guy.

During the final years of his life Mahoney was a popular guest at film conventions and autograph shows. He died of a stroke two days after being in an automobile accident in Bremerton, Washington. His ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean.

Legacy[link]

A tribute to Mahoney entitled "Coming Home" is found on the Internet site of the late marksman Joe Bowman of Houston, a close Mahoney friend. On February 6, 1990, the poem was read at a memorial tribute to Mahoney held at the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City, California. More than 350 attended, included Bowman. The reading was conducted by Mahoney's widow, Autumn Mahoney.^[1]

Personal life[link]

Mahoney was married three times, first to Lorraine O'Donnell, with whom he had two children. After his divorce from O'Donnell, he married actress Margaret Field in 1952. Mahoney and Margaret Field had one child, Princess O'Mahoney, born in 1955. Mahoney and Field divorced in June 1968. In 1969, Mahoney married actress Autumn Russell; the couple remained married until his death.

As Margaret Field's husband, Mahoney was stepfather to Richard Field and Sally Field. Mahoney and Sally Field appeared together in the 1978 film The End. His daughter Princess O'Mahoney later became a television and film assistant director.

Greta Thyssen (born Greta Thysegen on March 30, 1933) is a Danish-born American film actress and former model. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, she appeared in films and television shows between 1956 and 1967.

The petite Thyssen arrived in the United States after winning the Miss Denmark crown in 1952. She attempted to follow in the footsteps of the reigning blonde sex symbols Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield by forging a movie career. She was Monroe's double in Bus Stop,^[1] and appeared in Accused of Murder, Terror Is a Man, Journey to the Seventh Planet, and Three Blondes in His Life. In addition to her appearances on the television shows Dragnet and Perry Mason, Thyssen also appeared on Broadway in Pajama Tops as a replacement for June Wilkinson.^[2]

Thyssen is probably best remembered for her appearances in the Three Stooges films Quiz Whizz, Sappy Bull Fighters and Pies and Guys. In her brief stint with the roughneck Stooges, she endured a cream pie to the face in the latter film. After appearing in Cottonpickin' Chickenpickers in 1967, Thyssen retired from acting.

Leigh Snowden (born Martha Lee Estes, June 23, 1929 – May 16, 1982) was an American actress in motion pictures and television.

Studios bid for a young actress[link]

Snowden was from Covington, Tennessee. She began her career as a model for household appliances. A publicity photo of Snowden appeared in the July 1956 issue of Golf Digest; she was identified as a "movie starlet." Earlier in the year she had served as queen of the Tournament of Champions pro golf event in Las Vegas. Snowden was blond with a southern accent. She was first noticed on a Jack Benny television Christmas show when she walked across the stage before ten thousand sailors.^{[citation needed]} A newspaper piece with the headline Sailors Whistles Blow Blond Into Film Studio, followed. The column revealed that the morning after the show, agents for eleven Hollywood studios either phoned or came to Snowden's door bidding for her attention. Universal Pictures won the right to sign Snowden. There followed voice lessons to correct her southern accent and acting classes. She was instructed along with Mara Corday, Pat Crowley, Clint Eastwood, James Garner, and John Saxon. There was a seemingly endless number of dates with men arranged by Universal.

Actress in sci-fi classics[link]

Snowden became an actress in B-movies like All That Heaven Allows, The Square Jungle, The Creature Walks Among Us, and Hot Rod Rumble. Her screen career was a brief one, enduring only from 1954 – 1961. Her last performance in movies was an uncredited part as Evie in The Comancheros (1961). Her last TV roles came in episodes of This is Alice (1958) and Tightrope (1960).

She married accordionist Dick Contino who was once romantically involved with Piper Laurie. She met him at a party given by Tony Curtis to celebrate the first TV show performance of Rory Calhoun. Within three months Snowden and Contino wed. After a year, with the arrival of their first child, Snowden's career was all but over. She chose to be a stay-at-home mom who cared mostly about her family. She hated housework but enjoyed cooking.

Return to acting[link]

In 1971 Snowden made a comeback of sorts. She played the role of Maggie in the Fresno Community Theater production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams. She claimed to be nervous about having to appear in her slip during most of the play's second act. Even though briefly embarrassed, the actress professed a love of the stage. She liked it more in some respects than either television or films because of "the feeling of being more in touch with people."

Leigh Snowden died in 1982 of cancer in North Hollywood, California.

John McIntire (June 27, 1907 – January 30, 1991) was an American character actor.^[1]

Career[link]

The craggy-faced film actor was born in Spokane in eastern Washington State but reared in Montana, having grown up around ranchers and cowboys, an experience that would later inspire his performances in dozens of Westerns.

A graduate of USC, McIntire began acting in radio and on stage, before embarking on a lengthy film and TV career as a character actor. He was already 40 when he made his big-screen debut in 1947, but went on to appear in some 65 films, often playing police chiefs, judges, crazy coots and western characters. His films include the film noir classic The Asphalt Jungle (1950), the 1960 Hitchcock thriller Psycho and the 1960 drama Elmer Gantry, but some of his more memorable roles were in westerns such as the acclaimed Winchester '73 (1950) and The Far Country (1955), both with James Stewart, and The Tin Star, with Henry Fonda (1957). He also played a judge in Rooster Cogburn (1975), the sequel to True Grit featuring John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn. His final film role was in Turner & Hooch (1989).

In the mid-1950s, McIntire moved into television, appearing in anthology series, sitcoms and dramas, including a regular role on ABC's Naked City, before his character was killed off. Though McIntire had never had the lead role in a film, television provided him with his most prominent and long-running role when in 1961 he replaced the late Ward Bond in the popular NBC-ABC series Wagon Train, playing trailmaster Chris Hale in more than 150 episodes between 1961 and 1965. His co-stars were Robert Horton, Robert Fuller, Denny Scott Miller, Terry Wilson, Frank McGrath, and Michael Burns.

McIntire subsequently replaced actors Lee J. Cobb and Charles Bickford on NBC's The Virginian in 1967, playing Bickford's character's brother. Prior to his Wagon Train role, he guest starred as William Palmer in the series finale, "The Most Dangerous Gentleman", of the short-lived 1960 NBC western Overland Trail, starring William Bendix and Doug McClure, his subsequent co-star on The Virginian.

McIntire married actress Jeanette Nolan, in 1935, and they had two children together, one of whom was the actor Tim McIntire (1944–1986) who starred in the 1978 film American Hot Wax. McIntire and Nolan both figured in Psycho; he played a sheriff, while she voiced some of the "mother" lines. McIntire worked more closely with Nolan in the 1977 Disney animated film The Rescuers, in which he voiced the cat Rufus and she the muskrat Ellie Mae. Four years later, the couple worked on another Disney film, The Fox and the Hound, with McIntire as the voice of Mr. Digger, a badger, and Nolan as the voice of Widow Tweed.

Death[link]

John McIntire died from emphysema and lung cancer in Pasadena, California, in 1991. In addition to his wife Jeanette Nolan he was also survived by his daughter Holly McIntire. His son Tim McIntire preceded him in death in 1986 from heart problems.

Shawn Smith (October 28, 1965)^[2] is a Seattle-based songwriter, vocalist and musician in several bands (Brad, Satchel, Pigeonhed) and also as a solo artist. He was born in Spokane, Washington.^[2]

Smith has cited Freddie Mercury, Prince and KISS as early influences.^[3] Other influences he has noted are Steven Tyler, Bon Scott, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Andy Wood and Chris Cornell.^[4] It is easy to hear the impact of all of these varied performers in Smith's various projects.

In 2005, Smith unveiled a musical project called The Diamond Hand involving many musicians. He also has worked with Thaddeus Turner (formerly of Maktub and many other projects including Brad) under the name Forever Breakers.

From the North is Shawn's newest band with core members of Malfunkshun (Regan Hagar, Kevin Wood, Cory Kane) and the lyrics left by the late Andrew Wood. The band has also been billed as "Power of Wings" and "Von Nord" ("From the North" in German).^[5] Hagar has since been replaced by Seattle drummer Mike Hommel.^{[citation needed]} The band changed its name in July 2008 to All Hail the Crown and plans to release new music under this banner.^[6]

"Shake It (Like You Just Made Bail)," a song that remained unreleased until Shawn Smith made it available in digital format in 2007, was featured in the background of the cocaine scene of the "Proshai, Livushka" episode of The Sopranos (third season, 2001). "Leaving California" and "Wrapped in My Memory" from Smith's solo album Shield of Thorns were both featured prominently on the "Long Term Parking" episode of The Sopranos (fifth season, 2004). Yet another Shawn Smith related song has been featured on the show: Pigeonhed's "Battle Flag" appeared on the "46 Long" episode (first season, 1999) and was later included on The Sopranos: Peppers & Eggs: Music from the HBO Original Series.

"Battle Flag" has also been featured in a season six episode of NBC's prime-time medical drama ER, season three episode eleven of Showtime's drama Queer as Folk US, as well as a season one episode of The WB's Smallville. It has also been featured in the film Coyote Ugly and the trailer for Charlie's Angels.
