Many prominent leaders from around the world went to Nelson Mandela's memorial service in South Africa and, as is often the case at big events like this, they had a sign language interpreter there to translate for the hearing impaired. The only problem was that the movements the translator was making with his hands made no sense and many people became suspicious of him. So we brought in a real sign language interpreter to tell us what this guy was actually signing. "There's outrage among many in the deaf community over the appearance on stage Tuesday of a man who they say was only pretending to do sign language interpretation as President Obama and other world leaders eulogized Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, South Africa. Among those who noticed what was happening was Wilma Newhoudt, the first deaf person elected to South Africa's parliament and a vice president of the World Federation of the Deaf. "Shame on this male so called interpreter on the stage," she wrote on Twitter during the memorial service. "What is he signing? He knows that the deaf cannot vocally boo him off. Mandela Memorial Fake Sign Interpreter Thamsanqa Jantjie Says He Has Schizophrenia Mandela Memorial Fake Sign Interpreter Thamsanqa Jantjie Says He Has Schizophrenia Mandela Memorial Fake Sign Interpreter Thamsanqa Jantjie Says He Has Schizophrenia The man accused of faking sign interpretation while standing alongside world leaders like U.S. President Barack Obama at Nelson Mandela's memorial service said Thursday he saw "angels" at the event, has been violent in the past and suffers from schizophrenia. Thamsanqa Jantjie said in a 45-minute interview that his hallucinations began while he was interpreting and that he tried not to panic because there were "armed policemen around me." He added that he was once hospitalized in a mental health facility for more than one year. Jantjie, who stood gesticulating three-feet (1 meter) from Obama and others who spoke at Tuesday's ceremony that was broadcast around the world, insisted that he was doing proper sign-language interpretation of the speeches of world leaders. But he also apologized for his performance that has been dismissed by many sign-language experts as gibberish. The statements by Jantjie raise serious security issues for Obama, other heads of state and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who made speeches at FNB Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg's black township. The ceremony honored Mandela, the anti-apartheid icon and former president who died on Dec. 5. "What happened that day, I see angels come to the stadium ... I start realizing that the problem is here. And the problem, I don't know the attack of this problem, how will it come. Sometimes I get violent on that place. Sometimes I will see things chasing me," Jantjie said. "I was in a very difficult position," he added. "And remember those people, the president and everyone, they were armed, there was armed police around me. If I start panicking I'll start being a problem. I have to deal with this in a manner so that I mustn't embarrass my country." Asked how often he had become violent, he said "a lot" while declining to provide details.- published: 12 Dec 2013

Thamsanqa Jantjie says he has been an interpreter for nine years and is qualified although the government has now said he is not a professional. "I've got a training as an ordinary interpreter, necessary skills as interpreter, that's why I get a job as an interpreter, not further than that" he added. Jantjie has appeared at various ANC events signing on stage and says this is the first time anyone has questioned his skills. "My worry is that if I was doing something that is speechless for all these years, why were they quiet these organisations, these universities, these institutions, then it's a question that has to be asked before they call me a fake," he said. He went on to describe how he started to see angels and grew frightened while trying to maintain the sign language. Thamsanqa Jantjie said he suffers from schizophrenia which affected him during the service. The 34-year-old told Johannesburg's Star newspaper he started hearing voices and hallucinating while on stage. Jantjie explained how the condition has affected him: "I see angels come to the stadium. Sometimes I will react violently on that place. Sometimes I will see things chasing me. You know, I was in a very very difficult position," he said. "Please forgive me, but what I was doing, I was doing what I believe is my calling, I was doing what I believe makes a difference to the country," Jantjie continued. After the memorial, South Africa's leading deaf association denounced Jantjie as a "fake." The government has admitted he was not a professional interpreter.
