The Secret History of How Cuba Helped End Apartheid in South Africa
The Secret History of How Cuba Helped End Apartheid in South Africa
http://www.democracynow.org - As the world focuses on Tuesday's historic handshake between President Obama and Cuban President Raúl Castro, we look back at the pivotal role Cuba played in ending apartheid and why Castro was one of only five world leaders invited to speak at Nelson Mandela's memorial. In the words of Mandela, the Cuban "destroyed the myth of the invincibility of the white oppressor ... [and] inspired the fighting masses of South Africa." Historian Piero Gleijeses argues that it was Cuba's victory in Angola in 1988 that forced Pretoria to set Namibia free and helped break the back of apartheid South Africa. We speak to Gleijeses about his new book, "Visions of Freedom: Havana, Washington, Pretoria, and the Struggle for Southern Africa, 1976-1991," and play archival footage of Mandela meeting Fidel Castro in Cuba. Roadmap to Apartheid
Roadmap to Apartheid
With a comparison between apartheid South Africa and the Israel/Palestine conflict, this doc traces the future of one conflict from the past of another. Weaving the history of apartheid into the complex issues facing Israelis and Palestinians, it highlights the frighteningly similar laws and tools used by Israel and apartheid-era South Africa. It's a dark picture of the present but offers hope based on the peace that South Africa eventually found.- published: 05 Dec 2012

A Place in the City: Inside the struggle of South Africa's post-apartheid shackdwellers For downloads and more information visit: http://journeyman.tv/59335/short-films/a-place-in-the-city.html More than a decade after apartheid ended millions of South Africans still live in basic home-made shacks. We hear from the inhabitants as they eloquently argue their case for real citizenship rights. The shack dwellers movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo, began in 2005. Their slogan is 'Talk to us, not about us.' 'It's not that people like to live in shacks. No one will ever want to live in these conditions but they need to be close to their work' explains S'bu Zikode, Abahlali's elected leader. However, the group has not been welcomed by the ANC. They've been met with aggression rather than with negotiations. Police shot Mariet Kikine with six rubber bullets at a peaceful demonstration. 'I'm not stopping to fight the government for my rights. Now they've made me brave.' In the build-up to the 2010 soccer World Cup, Durban shack dwellers fear they will be bulldozed out of the city, or arrested. 'This new legislation makes it a crime to build shacks or resist demolition and eviction.' But the shack dwellers are determined not to give up. Africa 360 | Racial integration in South Africa
Johannesburg - 1 November 2013, A controversial new documentary FATHERLAND explores some race relations issues in South Africa, particularly the fine line between patriotism and racism. The movie is a hard and unscripted look inside the 'Kommandokorps' military boot camps that are being run in some white Afrikaans rural communities in South Africa. This week, eNCA Africa Editor, Chris Maroleng, talks to Franz Jooste, head of the Kommandokorps and analyst Dr. Piet Croucamp of teh University of Johannesburg.- published: 05 Nov 2013

White Poverty (in the New South Africa)
White Poverty (in the New South Africa)
More than 40 000 whites, of a total 4,5 million South Africans are currently classified as absolutely poor and live in informal settlements. Shacks and tents can be found on farms hidden far away from the public eye. Occasionally you may see a white beggar at the traffic lights, but in general most South Africans deny that there is such a thing as white poverty. This is the story of several white families who have lost their jobs and fallen into poverty as a consequence of preferential treatment for blacks. They are known as the "poor whites," a group that hardly gets discussed but that is rapidly increasing in size. Director Saskia Vredeveld follows an older couple that tries to help by picking up food at the supermarkets and meat auction and handing it out to the poor. They do not get any financial support from the government for their work, and it is only thanks to their determination that they manage to keep their heads above water. They bring us along to Coronation Caravan Park, an encampment just outside of Johannesburg where a large group of primarily white people live in wretched conditions.
