Existentialism: Lev Shestov, Penultimate Words
In this video, we explore the piece "Penultimate Words" an early work by Lev Shestov, an important figure in the development of Existentialism. This piece focuses heavily on Shestov's approach to truth, philosophical activity and systems, and a sort of empiricist-existentialist pluralism Shestov adopts and outlines. Existentialism: Lev Shestov, All Things are Possible (part 1)
In this video, I start my discussion of "All Things are Possible," one of the early works by Lev Shestov, an important figure in the development of Existentialism. I discuss in particular Shestov's critique of the philosophy and culture of his own time, his antisystematic empiricist approach to philosophy and to life, and his importance as an early interpreter who saw the connections between Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, and Nietzsche. I also discuss several of the metaphors in this work that illuminate his thought, then read and discuss a variety of passages in which he talks about why Philosophy must pull itself out of the yoke of logic, bring passion into metaphysics, and embrace the possible. Existentialism: Lev Shestov: All Things Are Possible (part 2)
In this video, I continue discussion of "All Things are Possible," one of the early works by Lev Shestov, an important figure in the development of Existentialism. I discuss in Shestov's critique of the philosophy and culture of his own time -- in particular metaphysics, positivism, and utilitarianism -- and his view of morality, science and logic as "those police agents", as ways in which we human beings allow necessity to be foisted off on us, infringing freedom, possibility, and experiment. I also discuss his insight that philosophical systems, while aiming at complete universality, cannot provide that, since they are ultimately rooted in the subjective, passional stances of the human beings who develop them The text is available online at the Lev Shestov site: http://shestov.phonoarchive.org/all/all_0.html- published: 31 Oct 2013

Existentialism: Lev Shestov, "The Theory of Knowledge"
In this video, I discuss the Existentialist philosopher Lev Shestov's short essay, "The Theory of Knowledge". In it, Shestov discusses the nature of truth and how post-Kantian Critical Philosophy, and the History of Philosophy have missed the sorts of truth that philosophers genuinely engaged in the practice of Philosophy -- an activity rather than a method or a discipline -- have encountered and attempted to convey. In his view, the Theory of Knowledge really functions as an apologetics for science, which indicates a kind of uneasiness or insecurity even about what is helps to be most reliable and certain. Truth in the full sense is not what the sciences can provide, nor is it found by universal assent of all rational beings, nor by application of disciplinary methods Shestov attacks logic and necessity, and espouses a metaphysical pluralism, in which it is possible for a number of great philosophers and philosophies to attain ultimate truths while still disagreeing with each other. He also distinguishes between philosophies, teachings or interpretations about those philosophies, and deductions from those philosophies.- published: 18 Dec 2013

In this video, I continue discussion of "All Things are Possible," one of the early works by Lev Shestov, an important figure in the development of Existentialism. I discuss in particular Shestov's views about the inherent difficulty of creative work, the mistaken views about creative activity that come from consumers of creative work, the difference between masters and innovators and those students, disciples, and emulators who come after them -- and I finish up by discussing the danger of the creative artist or philosopher turning into a "prophet", making reference to another essay by Shestov, "The Gift of Prophecy", written for the 25-year anniversary of Dostoevsky's death The texts of "All Things Are Possible" and "The Gift of Prophecy" are both available online at the Lev Shestov site: http://shestov.phonoarchive.org/all/all_0.html- published: 05 Dec 2013

Dr. Sadler's Channel Updates -- December 2013
In this update, I talk about some of the projects, talks, and activities I've got planned for the month of December 2013, and review what I've been doing in the month of November. One of the events upcoming for December -- one I'm particularly excited about -- is a Google Hangout on Air that I'll be holding on Saturday Dec 14, when I'll be discussing and fielding questions about Socrates, his thought, and his influence. Existentialism: Ranier Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
In this lecture, I discuss Ranier Maria Rilke's short but very rich work, Letters to a Young Poet, a series of ten deeply reflective letters Rilke writes over a roughly 5-year period to a younger man who is entering the military profession, but who aspires to be a poet. In the course of the Letters, Rilke articulates an understanding of personal development, advocating and describing what he calls "solitude," and cautioning against falling into "convention" or stifling one's growth by taking easy paths rather than undergoing the difficult growth that patience and time make possible. He ranges over a number of other topics, including Nature, Things, what poetry is and requires, what to make of sex, what love requires, childhood, time, and how to understand God. 2:20 - overview of the text and general themes 11:00 - the situation of Rilke as a poet, giving advice to a possible poet 21:00 - solitude, the most central theme 44:14 - development of oneself as a person, avoidance of falling into convention and easy paths 1:05:25 - Rilke on Things, God, sex and love- published: 14 Jan 2014

Martin Heidegger, The Origin of the Work of Art (part 3)
In this third and last lecture on Heidegger's essay, The Origin of the Work of Art, we bring his investigation in aesthetics and metaphysics back now to its starting point, enriched by a number of well-explored concepts and insights. We pick up by turning now to the nature of creation as Heidegger understands it -- involving his concepts of World and Earth, the strife and the Rift between them, and the thingly aspect out of which the work is in fact created. We also discuss the relationship between creator, artwork, and the preservers (the audience, the appreciators) of the work, and what it means for truth to appear historically. We end by discussing the paradigmatic status of poetry, and then reflecting upon the problem of artwork -- whether or not art can still open up truth for us in this late modern age.- published: 21 Aug 2013

Philosogeek Reflections # 3: Will MOOCs Democratize Education? (I argue No)
I've gotten a lot of questions from viewers about the MOOC (Massive Open Online Class) phenomenon in online education: Will MOOCs really replace face to face college education? Can MOOCs provide high quality education? Why aren't I teaching a MOOC? But for me, the most interesting question is that raised by claims made by proponents of these new educational platforms -- and largely ignored by critics of them -- i.e. that MOOCs will actually democratize higher education. To me, this seems unlikely for several reasons, perhaps the most important one being that MOOCs and the organizations that are offering them simply replicate an already well-entrenched, long-existing, but often less-than-apparent class system in higher education. Some of the site/articles mentioned in my discussion here are: An article about Mitchell Duneier's decision not to license his Coursera MOOC: http://chronicle.com/article/A-MOOC-Star-Defects-at-Least/141331/ An article about the high percentage of MOOC users already having degrees: http://www.edtechmagazine.com/higher/article/2013/12/80-percent-mooc-students-already-have-college-degree The "Udacity's Pivot" article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jonathan-haber/the-mooc-backlash-udacity_b_4339487.html Educause's library of MOOC-related articles: http://www.educause.edu/library/massive-open-online-course-mooc Open Culture's "625 Free MOOCs from Great Universities": http://www.openculture.com/free_certificate_courses- published: 06 Dec 2013

10 More VYou Shorts About Religion
This is the ninth video composed of 10 short (2 minute or under) clips which I recorded as a user of the now defunct VYou -- an innovative social network which allowed users to record short video responses to questions and comments. This video addresses a set of questions about topics in religion, and my own views about religious matters. All of the clips are responses recorded in various places and at different times, where I address another VYouser's questions or comments. The video quality is not particularly good on some of these clips -- they were recorded using older webcam technology. not at all sure how the Title, etc. stuff migrated into the video around 1:10 -- I've got to say: I'm not loving the recently updated version of iMovie, precisely because of that sort of stuff!- published: 11 Dec 2013
