Revolutionary or emancipatory consciousness and action after 1976: Part four
As indicated, the decade after the Rivonia Trial was not one of the absence of resistance, although in the case of the ANC and SACP cadres, they had to keep a low profile because the organisations were illegal after 1960 and massive repression was meted out against its members, before and after Rivonia. This is part four of a series on revolutionary/emancipatory consciousness and actions. 7. Being a Revolutionary
The American Revolution (HIST 116)
Professor Freeman continues her discussion of the Boston Massacre and how it represented a growing sense of alienation between the American colonists and the British authorities. The Americans and British both felt that the colonies were subordinate to Parliament in some way, but differed in their ideas of the exact nature of the imperial relationship. This period saw the formation of non-importation associations to discourage merchants from importing British goods, as well as committees of correspondence to coordinate resistance. One instance of such resistance occurred in December 1773, when Boston radicals who were frustrated with the Tea Act threw shipments of tea into Boston Harbor.

The Other Iranian Army: Understanding the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps with Maryam Alemzadeh
A Crown Seminar with Maryam Alemzadeh
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was established shortly after the Iranian Revolution in 1979 as a parallel to the army. Since then, it is seen as an integral part of Iran's post-revolutionary state. Yet despite its importance, much of the IRGC's decision making processes and organizational structure remains opaque to the outside world. In this talk, Maryam Alemzadeh focuses on the first years after the establishment of the IRGC in order to shed light on these issues. Specifically, she examines the ways in which the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) shaped the IRGC as we know it today. The talk is a part of Alemzadeh’s ongoing book project on the evolution of the IRGC from its conception in 1979 to the peak of its military achievements in 1982.

My Neighbor, My Enemy: The American Revolution as a Civil War
This seminar offers a revolutionary interpretation of the American Revolution. It restores ordinary men and women to the story we tell ourselves about national independence. Moving the focus of interpretation away from the Founding Fathers, it asks questions about resistance to imperial power on the community level. What were the sources of popular mobilization? How did the creation of committees of safety shape local resistance? What role did violence and intimidation play in the relations between neighbors? How did the directives of national congresses affect the actions of local insurgents?

Maryam Alemzadeh is the Harold Grinspoon Junior Research Fellow at the Crown Center.
This seminar was recorded on November 13, 2019.
