Title: Arirang News Title Title: Opening It is midnight in Washington, 6 in London, and 2 on a Friday afternoon here in Seoul. I'm Moon Conn-young. Let's get a check of the main stories we're following at this hour. Title: Headlines 1 An out-of favor uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been executed for trying to overthrow the government... the North's state-run news agency says,... in a headline that calls him a traitor. Title: Headlines 2 Exactly why was the second most powerful man in North Korea executed and what are the implications for the future? How will it impact the reclusive state's relations with the outside world and what about inter-Korean relations? We'll speak to an expert. Title: Headlines 3 A U.S. budget deal hailed as lifting the cloud of political dysfunction hanging over the world's largest economy... clears the House of Representatives with overwhelming support... after the leaders of both parties quashed dissent within their ranks. Title: Jang's Execution Bridge N. KOREA'S NO.2 EXECUTED Title: North Korean leader's uncle executed for treason We got reports out of North Korea earlier this Friday morning... Jang Song-thaek has been executed following a short military trial that found him guilty of treason. The once powerful uncle of leader Kim Jong-un, stripped of his power just a few days ago, was accused of forming a faction against the state and harboring his own political ambitions. Ji Myung-kil reports. The North's Korean Central News Agency reported early Friday that the uncle of leader Kim Jong-un had been executed. Jang Song-thaek, long considered as the country's second most powerful man and Kim Jong-un's former mentor, was sentenced to death for being a traitor who had tried to overthrow the state. Jang was executed after admitting to his crimes before a military tribunal on Thursday, the North said in a statement released by its state-run news agency. The execution comes just four days after Jang was dramatically removed from a Workers' Party session by armed guards. According to the agency's statement, Kim Jong-un accused Jang and his allies of double-dealing behind the scenes, dreaming different dreams, and selling the country's resources at cheap prices... thereby threatening North Korea's economic development. Jang's removal marks the most significant shake-up in two years under Kim's leadership and suggests the North's young leader is willing to go after his rivals publicly, and in ways more secretive than his father Kim Jong-il ever did. The North has never so explicitly described the crimes or the punishment of a high-level official before. Pyongyang labeled Jang "a traitor to the nation" and "worse than a dog" in its report. Jang was married to Kim Jong-un's aunt, Kim Kyong-hui, the younger sister of late leader Kim Jong-il. Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News.- published: 13 Dec 2013

Title: Arirang News Title Title: Opening It is midnight in Washington, 6 in London, and 2 in the afternoon on the first Thursday of 2014 here in Seoul. I'm Moon Conn-young. Let's get a check of the main stories we're following at this hour. Title: Headlines 1 Korea's new administrative city of Sejong is now up and running. The government held its first meeting of 2014 there for the very first time earlier this morning and broadcast the meeting live at the central government complex in Seoul. Title: Headlines 2 North Korean leader Kim Jong-un calls for better relations with South Korea... while boasting of his regime's tightened grip on power... in his first public speech since the purge and execution of his uncle, Jang Song-thaek, last month. Does he mean it and what should the rest of the world make of Kim's New Year's speech this year? We'll have the details. Title: Headlines 3 Things are again looking bright on the nation's trade front in the new year. With the global economy showing steady signs of a recovery,... Korean exports are expected to reach close to 6-hundred billion U.S. dollars this year. Title: Korean government holds first meeting of new year in Sejong City The Korean government held its first meeting of the new year this morning... and for the first time it was held in the new administrative city of Sejong in central Korea. The meeting, led by Prime Minister Chung Hong-won, was also broadcast live at the Central Government Complex in Seoul. The government's annual New Year's meeting has been held in Seoul for the past 40 years,... but starting this year... it will take place at the government complex in Sejong. Around 6-hundred officials that represent ministries and state agencies in the new administrative hub took part in the meeting. About 10-thousand officials of 31 government entities, including the Prime Minister's Office and the Finance Ministry, have moved to Sejong... following the second phase of a government relocation plan that wrapped up last December. Title: Rival parties vie for victory in June local elections Moving over to parliament... After passing the 2014 budget bill and other key bills in the early hours of New Year's Day, Korea's rival parties are now turning their attention to local elections set for June. Arirang News' National Assembly correspondent Kim Yeon-ji reports. The ruling Saenuri Party is determined to win a landslide victory in the June local elections, in which more than 39-hundred local government seats are up for grabs. It plans to harness all party resources and energy for the elections in a bid to empower the Park Geun-hye administration. As the first regional elections under the Park administration, the June elections will serve as an interim evaluation of her presidency. "It's time for us to pull up our collars and approach the public with a humble heart and integrity. We must make 2014 a year that guarantees a bright future for the party." The stakes are particularly high for the main opposition Democratic Party, which suffered a string of election defeats starting with the 2012 presidential election. It plans to appeal to voters by accusing the Park administration of worsening the people's livelihoods and the nation's democracy. "In addition to protecting democracy and the people's livelihoods, we need an election victory this brand new year." The Democratic Party recognizes the need for all-out reform and strengthened internal unity... as it has not only the ruling party to battle, but also a new party led by independent lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo. Ahn is pushing ahead with plans to form a third party that he says will overcome the old politics of the two-party system. His new party is fast gaining popularity in the southwestern Honam region, which has long been the Democratic Party's traditional power base. "The old system and way of thinking that wants to keep its vested rights by settling for regionalism and refusing to reform itself while talking down on the other... must be eradicated starting in the Honam region." Ahn's new party is sure to split the opposition vote, but Ahn has stressed that he won't merge with others... like he did in the 2012 presidential election when he, unsuccessfully, joined with the DP to try and get their candidate, Moon Jae-in, elected president. ARIRANG NEWS 14:00 Posco steel project expected to progress during President Park's India trip
President Park Geun-hye is in New Delhi for bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on this Thursday. During her stay in India,... there is expected to be some progress in stalled projects spearheaded by Korean companies, in particular, a steel mill launched by Posco that has been delayed for nine years. Our presidential office correspondent Eoh Jin-joo, who is traveling with the president, filed this report from India. Posco's stalled project to build a steel mill in the Indian state of Odisha looks like it's finally back on track,... coinciding with President Park's state visit to India. The Korean steel giant was granted an environmental clearance for the 27-hundred acres of land required for the project... and has secured a promise from the Odisha state government that the Korean steelmaker will be granted a prospecting license for an iron ore mine some 300 kilometers from the steel mill. The details will be confirmed during President Park's bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday. The project was launched in 2005... but has been delayed for roughly nine years due to land acquisition issues and environmental concerns. "The Korean government says that if the project goes forward as planned, the steel mill in Odisha will be able to start producing steel in eight years, which is in 2022. It also expects the POSCO project to create some 870-thousand jobs and generate annual sales of 3 billion dollars." President Park, who arrived in the Indian capital of New Delhi on Wednesday,... started her trip by meeting with Korean residents living in the South Asian country. The president said... there are a lot of fields in which Korea and India can create synergy through cooperation,... as the two countries each have a unique cultural heritage and are leading nations in advanced science and technology. In particular,... she emphasized the importance of the Korean community in India. "You should play the main role in expanding cooperation between Korea and India. You should also enjoy the fruits of such developments more than anyone else." President Park also pledged to seek greater opportunities for Korean businesses in India and reduce the difficulties Korean firms face when doing business in the nation by calling on the Indian government to reduce the restraints on foreign investment. Click "CC" for Scripts Subscribe to Arirang News! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=arirangnews With the leaders of Korea and Vietnam looking ahead to economic cooperation projects of the future,. let's now take a moment to look back at how the economic relationship between the two countries has developed over the past 20-plus years. And for that, we have Arirang News' Hwang Ji-hye joining us live at the newscenter. Jihye,. let's start with where economic ties between Korea and Vietnam stand today. The two nations share a long economic history together. That's right, Daniel. This year marks the 21st anniversary since the two countries established diplomatic ties. and during that period,. trade volume between the two nations has risen more than 40 times over. Last year,. bilateral trade volume stood at over 21-billion U.S. dollars. making Vietnam Korea's sixth-largest trading partner. and the third-largest among ASEAN nations that include countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Korea's main exports to Vietnam are mostly production parts for Korean companies that do business in Vietnam,. while imports from Vietnam include products like shoes and clothing that Korean companies produce there. A surprising point here,. is that 36 percent of Korea's trade surplus came from Vietnam last year,. meaning that a large number of Korean companies are heavily investing in the emerging economy. Ji-hye, we have been hearing that the rise of BRICS is something of the past and it's VIP - Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines that are attracting investors worldwide. Is it also rising as the new production base for Korean companies? Yes. Conn-young, I will get to your point about the rise of VIP in just a bit - but, to answer your question, many major Korean construction, manufacturing and financial companies are venturing into the Vietnamese market. Around 27-hundred Korean companies are engaged in more than 3-thousand projects in Vietnam,. which makes Korea the country's largest investing nation in terms of the number of projects. Korea's total investment reached nearly 25-billion dollars last year. and it stands as Vietnam's fourth-largest investor nation,. following Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. Tech-giant Samsung Electronics, for example, has invested 5-point-7 billion dollars. and more than 10 percent of Vietnam's trade surplus last year. came from mobile phone exports from Samsung's Vietnamese factories. So, for local companies,. Vietnam is rising as the next frontier for investment. and this is due to the business climate there. "The Vietnamese domestic market is huge, with a population of more than 92 million. The country also has a good geopolitical location. It's near China and other Southeast Asian countries." And more than half of that population is made up of the younger generation,. another factor that attracts foreign investment. But those are traits that many other emerging nations also share. What's so special about Vietnam? Experts say that Vietnam is politically stable compared to other emerging nations like Indonesia. and differentiates itself from South American countries like Brazil in terms of labor force. "Their labor is quite diligent, and they're so eager to learn something more like Korean people." And seeing the potential in Vietnam,. Korea is pouring money into aid projects there. The Korea International Cooperation Agency's assistance,. which is in charge of implementing the government's grant aid,. had pumped a total of 170 million dollars into Vietnam as of 2011. The agency's assistance is concentrated on supporting the central region of Vietnam -- one of the most vulnerable areas in the nation. And a large stake of Korea's economic development cooperation fund,. the EDCF,. is also directed toward projects in Vietnam. Korea Exim Bank, which operates the fund to foster industrial development and economic stability in Korea's partner countries, allocated the largest portion to Vietnam, more than 20 percent. The total amount of funds flowing from Korea into Vietnam to date. stands at 1-point-4 billion dollars. And following today's summit, it appears that those economic ties are only going to grow stronger. Exactly. The summit is expected to speed up free trade negotiations between the two countries, which would also build a foundation for even more companies to do business in the market. And, lead to stronger bilateral relations between Korea and Vietnam both economically and diplomatically. All right, Ji-hye. Thank you for the report.- published: 09 Sep 2013

You are watching Arirang News at 8. It's Monday,... January 13th here in Korea. Live from Seoul..., I'm Yoo Ji-hae. Title: President Park: Reunification will allow Korean economy take "fresh leap forward" We begin this evening at the nation's top office... and another reference by President Park Geun-hye about a possible reunification of the two Koreas. In an interview with Bloomberg News published on Monday,...President Park said reunification would serve as an opportunity for the Korean economy... to take a [quote] "fresh leap forward." She added that her administration would do its best to make more people understand... and recognize the need for reunification. President Park also said... that nobody knows when the two Koreas will become one again,... but she pledged to work toward bringing about that day at an early date. Title: Democratic Party chief stresses welfare, gradual reunification in New Year's press conference Moving now to a New Year's press conference by the main opposition Democratic Party. The party's chief, Kim Han-gil used the opportunity to take aim at President Park Geun-hye... while stressing universal welfare and a gradual reunification with North Korea. Our Kim Yeon-ji reports. Democratic Party chief Kim Han-gil criticized President Park's New Year's speech, saying she failed to provide concrete details on how she intends to improve the livelihoods of ordinary people... in a country with the world's highest suicide rate among the young and senior citizens. "The president did not mention 'economic democratization' or 'welfare' even once during her new year's speech. It's shocking." Kim said... his party will promote welfare support... aimed at helping people live a dignified life. "My party will strengthen policy for education, housing and health care to stop the collapse of the middle class and restore the ladder of hope that enables the poor to move into the upper class." Specifically, the Democratic Party chief said his party will push for free school meals, free high school education and cutting the cost of college tuition in half. He added that he and his party will work toward putting a cap on rental prices, including jeonse, which requires that a large lump-sum deposit be paid up front... and is returned in full at the end of the rental period. Kim also called for a strengthening of public health care policy and an expansion of public medical facilities for patients with severe diseases and dementia. He stressed that the party will oppose any attempt by the government to privatize health care or railway services. He also said he welcomed President Park's concept of reunification as a "jackpot" for the two Koreas, but stressed that the government must be sure to take practical steps to improve inter-Korean relations and prepare for a gradual and peaceful reunification with North Korea. "Targeting the local elections in June, the Democratic Party leader vowed to overcome the factionalism within his party and respond quickly to the public's demands. To break a long-standing deadlock in parliament, he pledged to push for an independent investigation into the alleged illegal electioneering by state institutions in 2012. Let's take a look at what's making the headlines. Title: Headline 1 Korea and China strongly protest Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's controversial war shrine visit. The U.S. says it's disappointed as Tokyo's latest move will further escalate tensions in Northeast Asia. Title: Headline 2 Labor and management of the state run rail operator KORAIL resume working-level talks as hopes rise the two sides can reach a compromise to end the nationwide rail strike that began nearly three weeks ago. Title: Headline 3 Plus,... The Korean government lays out its economic goals for 2014. It expects growth of just under four percent next year, up from 2-point-8 percent growth estimated this year. Title: Japanese PM Abe's visit to controversial war shrine angers Korea We begin with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's controversial visit to a war shrine... that honors Japan's war dead, including several Class-A war criminals. His surprise move... has infuriated Japan's neighbors, including Korea, which lodged a strong complaint. Han Da-eun reports. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe marked the anniversary of his first year in office by visiting the Yasukuni war shrine in Tokyo on Thursday morning. It's the first time a sitting prime minister has visited the controversial site since Junichiro Koizumi's visit in 2006. The Yasukuni Shrine honors two-and-a-half million Japanese war dead,... including some convicted war criminals. Abe had previously steered clear of the shrine for fear of further damaging regional ties, choosing instead to send donations. But the possibility of a visit has always lingered... due to the prime minister's strong nationalism and hawkish foreign policies. Abe told reporters on his way out... that he was paying respects to those who sacrificed their lives for Japan, and that he had no intention of upsetting the people of Korea or China. He added that he hoped to have a chance to explain his actions to the leaders of both neighboring countries. Korea's Culture Minister Yoo Jin-ryong called Abe's behavior "anachronistic." "The Korean government can't help but express its deep regret and anger over Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit, in defiance of the concerns of Japan's neighbors. The Yasukuni Shrine harbors war criminals and eulogizes Japan's imperialism." Yoo added Japan should acknowledge its past wrongdoing and build trust with its neighbors, starting with a sincere apology. Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kyou-hyun summoned Takashi Kurai, the deputy chief of the Japanese embassy in Seoul... to relay Seoul's concerns. Han Da-eun, Arirang News. Title: China slams Abe's Yasukuni visit, U.S. says it's disappointed The Japanese leader's visit to the war shrine has also drawn criticism from China and the United States. In a statement Thursday, the U.S. embassy in Tokyo said that, while Washington considers Japan a valued ally and friend,... it was disappointed Japan's leadership took an action that will exacerbate tensions in the region. China slammed Abe's visit,... saying the action makes it that much more difficult to improve bilateral relations... and that Japan must take responsibility for all the consequences that this creates. Title: 10 News Title Title: Opening Good morning... it's Thursday the twenty-sixth of December... you are tuned in to our 10am newscast here at Arirang's News Center in Seoul. Let's take a look at what's making the headlines. Title: Headline 1 In an unexpected sign the months-long political impasse could be drawing to an end, Korea's ruling and main opposition parties agree to pass key bills at next week's general Assembly session, including ones for the 2014 budget and spy agency reforms. Title: Headline 2 After evading arrest during a police raid Sunday, a union leader and three other members find refuge at a temple in downtown Seoul. While the police have set up checkpoints outside the temple, the union has asked the religious sector to help resolve the over two-week-long crisis. Title: Headline 3 Plus,... in its toughest step yet, Egypt's military-backed interim government declares the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group. The move gives the authorities even more leeway to crush the Islamist group. Title: Korea's rival political parties agree to pass key bills Monday In an effort to end the prolonged parliamentary deadlock, leaders of Korea's two main political parties met on Christmas Day... after which they agreed to pass key pending bills next Monday. The bills, include ones for next year's budget and spy agency reforms. Hwang Ji-hye reports. Could Korea's rival parties be ready to lay down their swords and pass a number of key bills that have been held up over bipartisan bickering in recent months? Officials from the ruling Saenuri Party and main opposition Democratic Party met on Wednesday... and agreed to pass next year's budget bill... this coming Monday. The 357-point-7 trillion won, or roughly 340 billion U.S. dollar budget plan for 2014, drawn up by the government in September,... has been stuck in the legislature amid a deadlock between the ruling and main opposition parties over allegations... that the National Intelligence Service... tried to sway public opinion in favor of now President Park Geun-hye ahead of last year's presidential election. To that end, the two parties also agreed on Wednesday to pass a bill on reforming the NIS. Additional talks on the details are scheduled to run through Friday. The Christmas Day agreement, however, does not resolve all the pending issues at the National Assembly. The ruling and opposition parties remain at odds over a series of bills aimed at revitalizing the economy, which is suffering from sluggish growth. President Park Geun-hye urged policymakers earlier this month... to pass the legislation, saying it's needed in order to maintain the momentum of recovery seen among record-high exports this year. Title: 10 News Title Title: Opening Good morning... it's Thursday the nineteenth of December... you are tuned in to our 10am newscast here at Arirang's News Center in Seoul. Let's take a look at what's making the headlines. Title: Headline 1 Citing a more positive economic outlook, the U.S. Federal Reserve trims its bond-buying stimulus from 85 to 75 billion dollars a month from January. It marks the beginning of a long journey back to a more normal policy setting. Title: Headline 2 Marking one year since President Park's election victory, the presidential office says the administration has focused on policies designed to improve people's livelihoods and made strides on the diplomatic front. The rival parties blame each other for the past year of political deadlock. Title: Headline 3 Plus,... Korea strongly protests Japan's latest security strategy, in which Tokyo refers to Korea's Dokdo islets as a territory in dispute and implicitly indicated its will to take the issue to the International Court of Justice. Title: U.S. Federal Reserve to start scaling back stimulus in January We start with the U.S. Federal Reserve's decision to trim by ten billion dollars its monthly bond-buying program beginning in January, citing stronger economic conditions in the U.S. Park Ji-won reports. The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday,... that it will reduce its long-running bond purchasing program to 75 billion dollars a month,... from previous 85 billion beginning next month. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank's decision came as the U.S. economy shows strong signs of recovery. "Today's policy actions reflect the committee's assessment that the economy is continuing to make progress but that it also has much farther to travel before conditions can be judged normal. Notably, despite significant fiscal headwinds the economy has been expanding at a moderate pace and we expect that growth will pick up in coming quarters helped by highly accommodative monetary policy and waning fiscal drag. The job market is continuing to improve with the unemployment rate having declined further." He added the Fed will further taper the stimulus bond-buying program next year,... if the economy continues to pick up. To minimize any possible blow on financial markets, the Fed kept its record-low key interest rate near zero. "The committee also clarified its guidance on interest rates, emphasizing that the current near-zero range for the federal funds rate target likely will remain appropriate well past the time that the unemployment rate declines below six and a half percent, especially if projected inflation continues to run past the committee's two percent longer run goal." The announcement comes a little over a month before Bernanke steps down from his post as Fed chairman. Bernanke said he closely consulted with the Fed's Vice Chair Janet Yellen,.... who is widely expected to be the next Fed chair,... and she fully supported the decision. Park Ji-won, Arirang News. Title: Possible effects of Fed's stimulus tapering on Korea, Asia For a detailed analysis on the effects the Federal Reserve's tapering of its stimulus program might have on Korea and the rest of the region, we are joined on the line by Yang Jun-sok , professor of economics at the Catholic University of Korea. Good morning, Professor Yang.... 1. What are the likely impacts on the Korean economy from the Fed's decision to start trimming its stimulus program? 2. Many analysts have predicted that tighter monetary policy in the U.S. will cause capital flight from Asian economies, including Korea. Do you agree with that? And, if so, what steps should policymakers and companies take to cope with such a scenario? 3. Tighter liquidity in the U.S. would probably mean a stronger U.S. dollar and weaker Japanese yen. Given that Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan compete in export markets, do you expect a currency war in the coming months. Thank you for your insights, professor. That was Professor Yang Jun-sok , professor of economics at the Catholic University of Korea on the possible effects the Fed's tapering might have on Korea and the rest of the region.- published: 19 Dec 2013

The president also vowed full government support to enhance the country's employment policy. Title: Cargo truck drivers say they won't pick up undelivered freight from rail strike Turning to the latest on the nationwide rail strike that has entered its 10th day.... In the latest development, a union of cargo truck drivers... said Wednesday it won't pick up the freight that's not being delivered because of the railway strike. Shin Se-min has the details. The railway strike that has affected commuters and businesses nationwide continues to expand. A union of cargo truck drivers... 12-thousand strong... said Wednesday it will not absorb the additional load from rail cargo that's not being delivered because of the strike. Rail cargo has been the hardest hit by the strike, suffering a service reduction of roughly 50 percent,... while subway services in Seoul have been scaled back by 7 percent. The Korea Railroad Corporation, or KORAIL, reduced its operations of KTX express trains by 12 percent on Tuesday. Regular passenger trains are running on restricted schedules, with only a 60-percent service reduction. As the strike enters its tenth day... the union for Seoul Metro, which operates lines subway one through four in the capital, found common ground with management... hours before its planned walkout on Wednesday. Meanwhile, some 9-hundred of the 8-thousand striking KORAIL union members have returned to work. Prosecutors are seeking arrest warrants for 18 more union members, in addition to the 10 warrants already issued since the strike started. Striking workers are demanding the government reverse its plans to set up a new railway operator, which they claim is a first step toward privatization. The government and police have characterized it as an "illegal strike," and say they will follow the letter of the law in dealing with it. Shin Se-min, Arirang News. In relation to the prosecutors' charges, nearly 150 union members are being called in by KORAIL in a separate investigation. We'll have more on this story as it develops.- published: 18 Dec 2013

ARIRANG NEWS 14:00 (THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT FOR ARIRANG NEWS THAT AIRED ON 26 Dec 2013- 14:00 KST.) Title: Arirang News Title Title: Opening It is midnight in Washington, 6 in London, and 2 on a Friday evening here in Seoul. I'm Moon Conn-young. Let's get a check of the main stories we're following at this hour. Title: Headlines 1 Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pays a visit to a controversial war shrine on his first anniversary since taking office -- in a move sure to infuriate Japan's neighbors,... including Korea. Title: Headlines 2 In a pleasantly surprising move, Korea's ruling and main opposition parties agree to pass key bills next week,... including bills for the 2014 budget and reforming the nation's spy agency. Title: Headlines 3 As the nation's railway workers' strike continues for the 18th day -- unprecedented in length -- state-run rail operator KORAIL says it will hire 6-hundred-60 new workers. The head of KORAIL is set to visit a temple where union leaders are seeking refuge... just about now. Title: Japanese PM Shinzo Abe visits controversial Yasukuni war shrine Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid a visit to the highly controversial Yasukuni war shrine in Tokyo on this Thursday morning. His move is expected to strain Japan's already tense relations with Seoul and Beijing, both of which see it as a symbol of Tokyo's unwillingness to repent for its wartime wrongdoing. Our Han Da-eun starts us off. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid a visit to the Yasukuni war shrine in Tokyo on Thursday morning to mark the anniversary of his first year in office. This is the first visit to the shrine by a sitting prime minister since Junichiro Koizumi's visit in 2006. State-run broadcaster NHK and other Japanese media outlets aired the visit live in reports beginning at 11:30 a.m. local time. The Yasukuni shrine honors two-and-a-half million Japanese war dead,... including some convicted war criminals. Abe had previously refrained from visiting the shrine for fear of further damaging regional ties, sending cash and other donations instead. But the possibility of his visiting has always lingered,... due to his strong nationalism and hawkish foreign policies. His move is almost certain to worsen Japan's already tense relations with Korea and China,... which have denounced past Yasukuni visits, saying it reflects Japan's unwillingness to acknowledge its past wrongdoing. Korea was quick to respond to the visit. The Korean ambassador to Japan, Lee Byung-ki, lodged a complaint with the Japanese government,... saying Abe's visit is an attempt to justify Japan's wartime atrocities and that it's unacceptable. The Korean foreign ministry's deputy director-general for the Northeast Asia division, Lee Sang-deok , also expressed his deep regret about the visit to the deputy chief of the Japanese Embassy, Takashi Kurai , via telephone. Seoul's foreign ministry will release an official statement criticizing Abe's move later this afternoon. Han Da-eun, Arirang News.- published: 26 Dec 2013
