Nevada Middle School Shooting: Student Kills Teacher Interrupting Him Playing with Gun - 10/21/13
10/21/13 - (Telegraph.co.uk) Sparks, Nevada Middle School Shooting: Teacher and student reported dead. Teacher and armed student are reported dead and two boys critically injured in shooting in a Nevada middle school. A boy has shot dead a teacher who tried to stop him playing with a gun and then killed himself at a middle school in Nevada, according to an eyewitness. Two other boys were in critical condition as they underwent emergency surgery for bullet wounds suffered in the latest school shooting in America. Kyle Nucum, 13, told journalists that he witnessed another student shoot his teacher in the incident at the school in Sparks, a small town near Reno in western Nevada. Kyle described to the Reno Gazette-Journal the horror that unfolded at about 7.15am shortly after Monday morning classes started in Sparks Middle School. He said that his teacher saw the student playing with a gun and ran towards the boy to tell him to put the weapon down, but was then shot. At a brief press conference, police did not initially confirm whether the dead and injured were students or teachers. But Tom Robinson, Reno's deputy police chief, did reassure parents that the danger was over. "I can tell them to rest assured," he said. "The schools are safe. The rest of the city is safe." The authorities said that the individual responsible for the shooting had killed himself with a self-inflicted wound. Terrified parents had earlier been told to go to a nearby high school car park to wait for children evacuated from the middle school. The scenes brought back memories of the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut last December when a gunman killed 26 pupils and teachers before turning his weapon on himself. Brian Sandoval, the Nevada governor, issued a statement after the shooting. "I was deeply saddened to learn of the horrific shooting at Sparks Middle School this morning," he said. "Kathleen [his wife] and I extend our thoughts and prayers to the victims and those affected by these tragic events."- published: 21 Oct 2013
