TORONTO - The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones may have bombed at the summer box office in 2013, becoming the latest supernatural flick based on a YA book series to do so, but the Toronto-shot fantasy pic did just over CAN$5.1 million ($4.78 million) at the Canadian multiplex to best all other comers among homegrown films this past year -- according to Telefilm Canada's year-end tally.
The Canada-Germany co-production from director Harald Zwart and producers Don Carmody and Robert Kulzer beat out a host of French-language films from Quebec, including Daniel Roby's period drama Louis Cyr: The Strongest Man in the World and its CAN$4 million ($3.75 million) box office take.
The Quebec biopic portrays a real-life athlete and performer, played by Antoine Bertrand, who died 100 years ago.
Other Canadian film heavyweights in 2013 include Andres Muschietti's horror thriller Mama, a Canada-Spain co-production that stars Jessica Chastain and earned around CAN$3.74 million (US$3.5 million) in Canadian box office, and Eric Tessier's Les Pee Wee 3D, a kids hockey drama that took in around CAN$2.4 million ($2.25 million).
Other Canadian film performers included Louise Archambault's Gabrielle and its CAN$1.31 million ($1.23 million) take, and Stefan Miljevic's Amsterdam, about friends who get detoured on a weekend fishing trip and end up in the Dutch city of sin, which pulled in CAN$532,000 (US$499,000) at the Canadian box office.
