Ben Affleck on Post-War Democratic Republic of Congo (2011)
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (French: République démocratique du Congo), sometimes referred to as DR Congo, Congo-Kinshasa or the DRC, is a country located in Central Africa. It is the second largest country in Africa by area and the eleventh largest in the world. With a population of over 75 million,[1] the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the nineteenth most populous nation in the world, the fourth most populous nation in Africa, as well as the most populous officially Francophone country. It borders the Central African Republic and South Sudan to the north; Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi in the east; Zambia and Angola to the south; the Republic of the Congo, the Angolan exclave of Cabinda, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west; and is separated from Tanzania by Lake Tanganyika in the east.[1] The country has access to the ocean through a 40-kilometre (25 mi) stretch of Atlantic coastline at Muanda and the roughly 9 km wide mouth of the Congo River which opens into the Gulf of Guinea. It has the second-highest total Christian population in Africa. The Second Congo War, beginning in 1998, devastated the country and is sometimes referred to as the "African world war" because it involved nine African nations and twenty armed groups.[5][6] Despite the signing of peace accords in 2003, fighting continued in the east of the country in 2007. There, the prevalence of rape and other sexual violence is described as the worst in the world.[7] The war is the world's deadliest conflict since the Chinese Civil War, killing 5.4 million people since 1998.[8][9][10] More than 90% were not killed in combat. They died from diseases that were both preventable and treatable (malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia and malnutrition) aggravated by displaced populations living in unsanitary and over-crowded conditions that lacked access to shelter, water, food and medicine.[11] Forty seven percent of those deaths were children under five.[8] Until today the ongoing conflicts exacerbate the exhaustion of the country's great agricultural potential. This is one reason for a high mortality rate and prevalence of malnutrition.[12] Conflict for control of the mineral wealth is behind some of the most violent atrocities.[13] The Democratic Republic of the Congo was formerly, in chronological order, the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Republic of the Congo, and Zaire (Zaïre in French).[1] Though it is located in the Central African UN subregion, the nation is also economically and regionally affiliated with Southern Africa as a member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). On and off fighting in the Ituri conflict occurred between the Nationalist and Integrationist Front (FNI) and the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC) who claimed to represent the Lendu and Hema ethnic groups, respectively. In the northeast, Joseph Kony's LRA moved from their original bases in Uganda (where they have fought a 20-year rebellion) and South Sudan to DR Congo in 2005 and set up camps in the Garamba National Park.[34][35] In northern Katanga, the Mai-Mai created by Laurent Kabila slipped out of the control of Kinshasa. In 2009, people in the Congo may still be dying at a rate of an estimated 45,000 per month,[36] and estimates of the number who have died from the long conflict range from 900,000 to 5,400,000.[37] The death toll is due to widespread disease and famine; reports indicate that almost half of the individuals who have died are children under the age of 5.[38] There have been frequent reports of weapon bearers killing civilians, destroying property, widespread sexual violence,[39] causing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes or otherwise breaching humanitarian and human rights law. A new study says more than 400,000 women are raped in the Democratic Republic of Congo every year.[40] On February 24, 2013 a United Nations-backed accord aimed at stabilizing the Democratic Republic of the Congo called the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo was signed in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa by eleven African countries -- Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania (UN News Centre 2013). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo Image by Medill DC Uploaded by MyCanon (Ben Affleck) [CC-BY-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons- published: 13 Aug 2013

History will one day have its say, but it will not be the history that Brussels, Paris, Washington or the United Nations will teach, but that which they will teach in the countries emancipated from colonialism and its puppets. Africa will write its own history, and it will be, to the north and to the south of the Sahara, a history of glory and dignity.

■ Pangloss in Second Life
First time I met Bowie we talked about her inspiration
Pangloss was inspired originally by photographer Richard Mosse's photo "Men Of Good Fortune". http://www.richardmosse.com/content/4.works/10.infra/21.jpg. This photo is taken using a military infrared camera, making the photos look like a beautiful Lisa Frank dream land, when in reality they are devastating pictures of a war-torn Congo. The contrast of harsh reality and haunting, surreal beauty really moved me and I was reminded of a character in Voltaire's "Candide" named Pangloss. Pangloss is a delusional character who believes that he lives in the best of all possible worlds. He sees the world through rose-colored glasses, and he refuses to acknowledge the pain and suffering before him; Again, the contrast of reality and surreality.
Was obvious I had to make a second machinima revealing the hidden ghosts of Pangloss. History of Congo is a long list of disasters. Shortly, one of baddest never ending colonization history. Under the reign of Belgium King Leopold II, from 1885 to 1908, it is estimated that the Congolese native population decreased by about ten million people. During the Cold War western countries particularly the United States supported a dictator Mobutu due to his anti-communist stance. By 1996 the past victims of Rwanda genocide became the genocider in east of Congo, without almost any reaction of International Community. Two wars 1996-1997, 1998-2003, never ending conflict in North Kivu. 11 countries engaged making it the deadliest war since World War II with over 5.6 million of deaths. Sadly those wars has been financed by all of us. A mineral Coltan, used to build computers, mobile phones, tablets is extracted in the east of the country, and partly finances the rebels, along with the equally deplorable gold and cassiterite (tin oxide) trades.

■ War Witch (Rebelle)
A film by Kim Nguyen
http://www.rebelle-lefilm.ca/english/
Montreal-based filmmaker Kim Nguyen paints a poignant and harrowing portrait of Komona, a 14-year-old girl who has been kidnapped from her African village by rebels to become a child soldier. She escapes from the camp with an older albino soldier and experiences for the very first time the joys of a peaceful and loving life, but a fresh tragedy will force her to confront and fight the ghosts haunting her mind. Inspired by a real story that took place in Burma. Nguyen worked on the film for 10 years, watching and catching children's points of view with his camera and mixing in tightly edited flashbacks in which the spirits of human beings appear with an ultra-realistic and violent storyline. War Witch is also a poignant and impossible love story filled with magic, picturesque images.

THE CONGOLEASE
(from "congolese" - inhabitants of the Congo
and the verb "to lease")
I had decided that I would try to get in touch with an association, in order to make a short film for them, for free. We chose Friends of the Congo.
The film has been screened during the Congo Week 2013
"An old and tired congolese man tells us the History of the Congo, in Africa, through various ages of his own life. Child, teen, adult and old correspond to 4 critical periods in the History of the Congo : belgian colonisation, world war II, the reign of Mobutu Sese, and nowadays stealings by multinational."
The graphics of the film, with a pastel touch, are inspired by this picture of Lumumba that appears on the website of FOTC : http://www.friendsofthecongo.org/images/footer/lumumba_red.jpg

THE CONGOLEASE
(de "congolese" - les habitants du Congo en anglais
et le verbe "to lease" - le fait de voler, léser)
J'avais décidé que j'essaierais d'entrer en contact avec une association, afin de leur faire un film gratuitement. Nous avons choisi Friends of the Congo (Les Amis du Congo).

David Beriain is a Spanish war correspondent that has covered conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Congo, Colombia and Kashmir, among others. He is currently in charge of coordinating the fea- ture section at Medina Media, a production com- pany based out of Spain.
Beriain is one of the few reporters in the world that has managed to infiltrate the FARC guerrilla camps in Colombia. His work there made him a finalist for the Bayeux-Calvados, the most pres- tigious international award for war correspon- dents. He has interviewed the Taliban command- ers who killed Spanish soldiers, met with the twelve-year-old hitmen that Colombian druglords exploit as child soldiers, and even accompanied the American Army on some of their most danger- ous military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. His latest TV documentary took him to Eastern Congo, where he covered the conflict between the Congolese Army and the rebels who fight, kill and rape in order to gain the control of the Coltan and Cassiterite mines.
During his time at Sea Bites, Beriain was in charge of producing the story and coordinating all the members in the team. He was the one who convinced everyone to get on board and as a true leader, he turned a group of people who did not know each other into a real team.

CONGO; WAR LOOMS IN DRC despite rebel withdrawal FORCES MASS
As promised, the rebel M23 forces moved out of Goma on Saturday, pulling back the agreed 20 kilometres to allow a dialogue to begin with the government in Kinshasa. The rebels take with them an arsenal of weapons and munitions captured from the government forces who abandoned the Democratic Republic of Congo's second city without firing a shot. But the week-old ceasefire brokered by the Great Lakes states led by Uganda looks in imminent danger of collapse after the DRC's new military chief sounded off: "Now it's war that will bring peace in Congo. It is you, the Europeans, who said 'if you want peace, make war'. Well, we're preparing for war now," said General François Olenga. Government police are already returning and are hearing complaints of pillage or worse by M23 which, under the terms of the ceasefire shares the running of the international airport and retains the right to station at least 100 armed men in the city.- published: 01 Dec 2012
