Danish architect Bjarke Ingels delivered the Royal Academy's 25th Annual Architecture Lecture in the unique setting of the RA Summer Exhibition.
Bjarke Ingels is one of the world’s most exciting architects. His approach to design is to begin with the question, ‘What is the biggest problem – what is the greatest potential?’ He finds the answer through careful analysis of everything from local cultures and climates and ever-changing patterns of contemporary everyday life, to the ebbs and flows of the global economy.
The result is an information-driven architecture, innovative in both programme and technology, which stands as the material counterpart to the rapidly evolving realities of the twenty-first-century digital economy and digital communication networks.

Hot to Cold
Evening Lectures
Architecture never happens in the clinical conditions of a lab. It is always responding to a series of existing conditions – the context, the culture, the landscape, the climate. Our climate is the one thing we can’t escape – the one condition we always have to respond to. HOT TO COLD is a colourful exploration of how architecture evolves in response to its context and climate and as an artistic contemplation of how life in return reacts to the framework created by the architecture.
Bjarke Ingels started BIG Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005 after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001 and working at the Office of Metropolitan Architecture in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Through a series of award-winning design projects and buildings, Bjarke has developed a reputation for designing buildings that are as programmatically and technically innovative as they are cost and resource conscious. Bjarke has received numerous awards and honors, including the Danish Crown Prince’s Culture Prize in 2011, the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2004, and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Award for Excellence in 2009. In 2011, the Wall Street Journal awarded Bjarke the Architectural Innovator of the Year Award. In 2012, the American Institute of Architects granted the 8 House its Honor Award, calling it “a complex and exemplary project of a new typology.”
Alongside his architectural practice, Bjarke has taught at Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University, and Rice University and is an honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen. He is a frequent public speaker and has spoken in venues such as TED, WIRED, AMCHAM, 10 Downing Street, and the World Economic Forum.
Following the lecture copies of Hot to Cold will be sold at a special launch price of £30
Please note: This lecture will not be ticketed. Seats will be assigned on a first come first served basis until the lecture hall is full. A relay of the lecture will be available in the Rear Second Presentation Space for those unable to enter the Lecture Hall.

Renowned Danish architect Bjarke Ingels here offers his architectural advice to aspiring architects and explains why architecture is fundamentally important for the world we live in.
Bjarke Ingels is considered one of the greatest architects of our time, with projects such as the BIG U, which contains a plan to fortify the whole south tip of Manhattan against future storms and rising sea levels. His architectural vision evolves around a philosophy that could be described as a pragmatic utopianism, combining everyday needs with sustainable solutions to the climatic challenges.
We live in the anthropogenic age, where humans don’t adapt to life, but life adapts to human needs, Ingels explains, which makes his advice to young architects designing tomorrow’s world simple and clear. The key for young architects is to acquire the tools and language to comprehend the human needs outside of the architectural bubble, and understand that they are here to accommodate - and not to be accommodated.
Bjarke Ingels (born 1974) is a renowned Danish architect and founding partner of BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group located in Copenhagen and New York. In 2013 BIG was chosen to redesign the Smithsonian, the world’s largest museum and research complex in Washington, a project which will be implemented over a period of 20 years. His projects include The Mountain, a residential complex in Copenhagen, and the innovative Danish Maritime Museum in Elsinore. In 2004 he received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and the Danish Crown Prince’s Culture Prize in 2011. Moreover, BIG received Architizer’s Firm of the Year Award in 2014.

The completion of the World Trade Center will restore the majestic skyline of Manhattan and unite the streetscapes of TriBeCa with the towers Downtown. To complete this urban reunification BIG have proposed a tower that will feel equally at home in TriBeCa and the World Trade Center. From TriBeCa, the home of lofts and roof gardens, it will appear like a vertical village of singular buildings stacked on top of each other to create parks and plazas in the sky. From the World Trade Center, the individual towers will appear unified, completing the colonnade of towers framing the 9/11 Memorial. Horizontal meets vertical. Diversity becomes unity.
Our film which was used to launch the design combines film footage with a range of visualisation techniques. Following a single spiralling movement the camera moves upwards through the building revealing inhabitants going about their everyday activities. Interviews with Bjarke Ingels were filmed at various locations around the building and were combined with motion graphics to help explain how the architectural vision will fit within the surrounding environment.
