Following the four horned goat! Nanda Devi Raj Jaat Yatra
Thousands of devout pilgrims follow the four horned goat as it leads them up to the glacial tarn of Roopkund where the hundred of skeletons lie, left over from an ancient tragedy - either avalanche or poisoning - no one knows! Men and women in trances, possessed by the devi, dance in mad abandon. The royal family of Garhwal conducts the Nanda Raj Jaat to please the Isht-Devi, in order to seek blessings for a prosperous kingdom and the defeat of their enemies. In Chamoli Nanda Devi Rajjaat is organized once in 12 years. The jaat starts from Nauti village near Karnprayag and goes upto the heights of Roopkund and Haemkund with a four horned sheep. After the havan-yagna is over, the sheep is freed with decorated ornaments, food and clothings and the other offerings are dischared. Special prayers and rituals are performed and the offerings are loaded on the four- horned Ram just like the things given to a daughter in her marriage are sent. The deity is decorated like a bride, ready to leave for her husband's home. The scene becomes pathetic when the devotees, in tears, bid farewell to the Devi, as if they are bidding farewell to their own daughter. The Raj Jat Yatra is held annually, in Garhwal. The Raj Jat Yatra is heldonce in twelve years. This is a study of the once-in-12-year pilgrimage, shot over two months in the monsoon of 2000, following the thousands of pilgrims and thefour-horned goat which leads the procession, from the lower hills to the18, 000 foot high Roopkund ...

7 Wonders of India: Nanda Devi
Nanda Devi is the second highest mountain in India and the highest entirely within the country. It is part of the Garhwal Himalaya, and is located in the state of Uttarakhand. Nanda Devi is notable for its large, steep rise above local terrain. It rises over 3300 metres (10800 ft) above its immediate south western base on the Dakkhni Nanda Devi Glacier in about 4.2 kilometres, and its rise above the glaciers to the north is similar. This makes it among the steepest peaks in the world at this scale, closely comparable, for example, to the local profile of K2. The peak is regarded as the patron-goddess of the Uttarakhand Himalaya.

Expedition garbage in Nanda Devi sanctuary
See expedition garbage left behind within the inner core of the Nanda Devi sanctuary, being examined by Rupin Dang. The garbage includes old lead acid batteries, tin cans, gas stoves, cheese tins and kerosene containers. The photographer takes pictures of the Primula macrophylla var. moorcroftiana, only to have his hat fly off in the windy Sarsarpatal meadow! Nanda Devi or Goddess of the Himalaya is the second highest mountain in India (excluding Pakistan occupied Kashmir) and the highest entirely within the country (Kangchenjunga being on the border of India and Nepal); owing to this geography it was the highest known mountain in the world until computations on Dhaulagiri by western surveyors in 1808. Nanda Devi is one scenic grandeur present in Garhwal Himalayas. It was also the highest mountain in India before Sikkim joined the Indian Union. It is part of the Garhwal Himalaya, and is located in the state of Uttarakhand, between the Rishiganga valley on the west and the Goriganga valley on the east. Its name means Bliss-Giving Goddess. The peak is regarded as the patron-goddess of the Uttarakhand Himalaya. After the re-opening of the Sanctuary in 1974 to foreign climbers, trekkers, and locals, the fragile ecosystem was soon compromised by firewood cutting, garbage, and grazing. Serious environmental problems were noted as early as 1977, and the sanctuary was closed in 1983. Currently, Nanda Devi forms the core of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (which includes Nanda ...

Klub Podróżnik zaprasza: Tomek Walkiewicz - Himalaje Nanda Devi East Expedition 2009 Cz. 1
Akcja prowadzona byłą w terminie 21 kwietnia - 7 czerwca 2009 roku. W wyprawie wzięło udział 10 osób. Pomysłodawcą i kierownikiem wyprawy ...

Currently, Nanda Devi forms the core of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (which includes Nanda Devi National Park), declared by the Indian government in 1982. In 1988, Nanda Devi National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, "of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humankind." The entire sanctuary, and hence the main summit (and interior approaches to the nearby peaks) are off-limits to locals and to climbing ...

HIMALAYAN BLACK BEAR
I was fortunate indeed to get this close, and for this long, to such a powerful (and dangerous) animal! Luckily for me he was on the other side of the river. I was trekking to Kaphni Glacier, on the southern flanks of Nanda Devi (25,500 ft) in the Kumaon Himalaya (Uttarkhand State, India) in July 2008.
It was early morning and he didn't see me, intent as he was on crossing the water. It is incredible to watch him wading through fast flowing glacial melt, that would knock a human off his or her feet in seconds!
These bears are hunted for their gall bladders and claws (used in traditional Chinese medicine), and are everywhere threatened by loss of habitat as forests make way for new villages and fields. Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve is still a relatively safe place for them because of it's remoteness, and the presence of trekkers and Forest Department staff.
