Plot
This is the story of an ancient meditation technique named Vipassana, which shows people how to take control of their lives and channel them toward their own good.It is the story of a strong woman named Kiran Bedi, the former Inspector General of Prisons in New Delhi, who strove to transform the notorious Tihar Prison and turn it into an oasis of peace. But most of all it is the story of prison inmates who underwent profound change, and who realized that incarceration is not the end but possibly a fresh start toward an improved and more positive life. These people have shown that reform can work if it is self-reform. Their success has been so dramatic that recently the Indian Government decided to apply Vipassana in all the country's prisons. Other countries are becoming interested as well. The filmmakers spent about two weeks inside Tihar Central Prison in New Delhi and Baroda Jail in the Indian state of Gujarat. They interviewed inmates and jail officials, and filmed in places rarely accessible to film crews, whether Indian or foreign.

Eilona Ariel is a documentary filmmaker whose work was deeply inspired by her life in Asia and her practice of the ancient meditation technique called Vipassana. She moved to New York City in 1978 and spent nine years studying and working as a musician and a photographer. In 1980, she received a diploma from the Germain School of Photography. She left the USA in 1987 to spend several years living in Asia. In 1995 she returned to Israel and established the Karuna Films Production Company together with Ayelet Menahemi. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Aufgrund dieser und weiterer Erfahrungen mit dem Fischer Verlag - etwa mehr als ein halbes Jahr Lücke zwischen der 1. und 2. Auflage, obwohl die 1. Auflage nach knapp 6 Monaten verkauft war, oder eine 5-prozentige (!) Beteiligung am Nettoladeverkaufspreis - freue ich mich, das Buch angesichts des "Rise" des Ebooks bald als solches herauszugeben. Ich bot das Buch später noch dem dtv-Taschenbuchverlag an. Denn bei dtv erscheint das Einführungsbuch der Vipassana-Tradition von S. N. Goenka, das früher auch zur "Spirit"-Reihe des Fischer Verlags gehörte. Es wurde bei Amazon "im Pack" mit meinem Buch angeboten mit einem ähnlichen Verkaufsrang . Eine große Diskussion zu dieser Tradition von S. N. Goenka findet auf meinem Blog www.buddha-heute.de/blog statt. Die dtv-Lektorin antwortete mit dem folgenden wissenschaftlich völlig unhaltbaren Argument, das genauso von Vertretern der Vipassana-Tradition von S. N. Goenka hätte kommen können: Sie engte nämlich den großen Überbegriff "Vipassana" auf die Methode alleine dieser Richtung ein, indem sie meinte, es ginge in meinem Buch nicht um Vipassana, sondern generell um Achtsamkeit. Der Verdienst für den Autor an einem Ebook ist trotz des deutlich günstigeren Preises für den Kunden ungleich höher als an einem gedruckten Buch. Auch wenn das Ebook etwa über den Kindle-Shop von Amazon angeboten wird, sind es 70 % für den Autor; und auf der eigenen Website 100 %. Dem Ebook gehört die Zukunft, zumindest im Sachbuchbereich: Auf einem kleinen, leichten Ebook-Reader kann etwa eine ganze Bibliothek mitgenommen werden, lassen sich übersichtlich digitale Notizen anbringen oder schnell Stellen finden. Die Ebook-Reader oder Tablets und Smartphones mit Ebook-Apps sind heute schon sehr hoch entwickelt. Unterstützen Sie den Autor und nicht an Maximalprofiten orientierte globale Buchkonzerne oder Großverlage (wobei es Ausnahmen gibt, wie den Suhrkamp Verlag der Weltreligionen, oder kleine Spartenverlage). Eine deutlich erweiterte und gründlich aktualisierte Fassung des gedruckten "Kursbuch Vipassana" kann rechtlich erst nach der Dissertation erscheinen, weil Teile von ihr in das neue Kursbuch einfließen werden. Die Dissertation über die zeitgenössische Bewegung der Achtsamkeits- bzw. Einsichtspraxis Vipassana entsteht an der interfakultären Religionswissenschaft in München, die von Michael von Brück geleitet wird.
