KDF Shifta War veteran
www.ntv.co.ke The Kenya Defence Forces are claiming what they say is their biggest victory yet in their sixteen week stay in Somalia. The forces say last evening they captured two critical centres of Hosingo and Baadade. However, one veteran who now lives in Nyeri says he would be happy to give a few tips to the troops. 62-year-old Layfields Mureithi fought in the 1977 Shifta War in Somalia, and as Brenda Wanga reports, he says it was much more difficult back then.

Minister Weeps at TJRC Hearing
A Cabinet Minister broke down as he recounted his personal experience during the Wagalla massacre before the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission. Northern Development Minister Mohamed Elmi emotionally spoke of how government security officers reportedly killed tortured, raped and destroyed people's property in Wajir in 1984, under the guise of a disarmament exercise. The emotional session also saw radio and TV producer Fred Machoka weep, recounting his time as a police officer deployed to fight in the Shifta war of the 1970's.

Vishwatma (1992)Hear the sights and sounds of beautiful Kenya!
Director: Rajiv Rai Release Date: 24 January 1992 (India) KENYA The Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa. Lying along the Indian Ocean, at the equator, Kenya is bordered by Ethiopia (north), Somalia (northeast), Tanzania (south), Uganda plus Lake Victoria (west), and Sudan (northwest). The capital city is Nairobi. Kenya spans an area about 85% the size of France or Texas. The country is named after Mount Kenya, a significant landmark and the second among the highest mountain peaks of Africa. However, most historians consider that the colonial history of Kenya dates from the establishment of a German protectorate over the Sultan of Zanzibar's coastal possessions in 1885, followed by the arrival of the Imperial British East Africa Company in 1888. Incipient imperial rivalry was forestalled when Germany handed its coastal holdings to Britain in 1890. This followed the building of the Kenya-Uganda railway passing through the country. From October 1952 to December 1959, Kenya was under a state of emergency arising from the Mau Mau rebellion against British rule. The governor requested and obtained British and African troops, including the King's African Rifles. In January 1953, Major General Hinde was appointed as director of counter-insurgency operations. The situation did not improve for lack of intelligence, so General Sir George Erskine was appointed commander-in-chief of the colony's armed forces in May 1953, with the personal backing of Winston Churchill. The ...

SOMALI AIR FORCE
15th February 2011 is the 51st Anniversary of the official establishment of Somali air force. However, the Somali air force existed nearly 10 years before its official establishment as branch of the armed forces. The Somali air force academy was one of the preeminent in Africa for a long time, many countries used to send their pilots to be trained by the SAF. Somali air force members were sent by the Somali government to play a secret part in many of the libration struggle in African countries especially former Portuguese colonies, South Africa and Rhodesia (Zinbabwe, Zambia & Malawi) as military advisers to the freedom struggle groups. During the Ogaden war, the Somali air force was a major contribution to the war effort, and made foremost aerial gains at the beginning. However, a massive intervention from the Soviet Union and the communist cluster lead to serious strains later in the war. The Somali air force also played roles in the 1964 Somali-Ethiopian war and the shifta skirmishes with Kenya. The air force was also regularly employed for disaster Managment, search and rescue operations and drought reliefs in its lifetime. In this video, you will see some of the SAF pioneers, images and sounds from the era.

Kenya to help crush Somali insurgency
www.instablogs.com Kenya to help crush Somali insurgency Kenyas intention to help crush the insurgency in Somalia is the strongest government response so far to the crisis in the troubled eastern neighbour. Somalia has been Kenyas most enduring security headache since independence, starting with the Shifta movement that waged war in the 1960s; onto the present threats posed by the infiltration of global terrorist groups like al-Qaeda into the governance vacuum in Somalia. Al Shabaab, the Islamist militia group currently engaging government forces in Mogadishu, makes no secret of its links to Osama bin Ladens al-Qaeda network, and that would be a major concern to Kenya. Some of the key leaders of the East African Al-Qaeda cell that planned the two bombings are believed to be still operating in Somalia and playing key roles in managing the Islamist militias that now threaten to topple the transitional government.

One Day in the Life of Richard Gonzalez
I will never be the same person that I was when I left the States, writes Richard Gonzalez in a haunting remembrance of his experience as a US Army operating room technician and medic in Iraq. I will never be the same person I was when I came back. Who I will become, though, remains to be seen. A BMCC Writing and Literature major who graduated this spring, Gonzalez received the $1000 prize for autobiography in this years Writing and Literature Program competition, and plans to continue his studies this fall at Hunter College. His entry was titled MASCAL military jargon for mass casualty incident. A detour en route to college Raised in Brooklyn, Gonzalez had planned to go to college upon graduation from high school in 1998. But I didnt know how to pay for it, he says, so I decided to enlist and then attend college on the GI bill. After training stateside, Gonzalez was deployed to Iraq in the summer of 2005, landing first in Kuwait. From there, he flew into Baghdad and then helicoptered into Abu Ghraib, site of the notorious military prison where US military personnel reportedly abused and tortured Iraqi war prisoners. He would spend the next year in the base hospital there, tending to patients subjected to a kind of pain and suffering that I hope I never understand. Gonzalezs 12-hour workshifts would routinely be filled with blood, gore, screams and chaos. But one hellish day in particular stood out in his memory and inspired MASCAL, which he originally wrote as a student ...
