The Hong Kong Open (also known as the Salem Open) is a defunct tennis tournament that was held in Hong Kong on the Grand Prix tour from (1973–1987) and the ATP Tour from (1990–2002). It was replaced in 2003 by the Thailand Open.

In 2001, as with legislation restricting tobacco sponsorship, organisers controversially altered its official logo to include the logo of Perrier, causing anti-smoking campaigners to claim that the organisers exploited a loophole in its sponsorship clause.

Players competed in the Victoria Park Tennis Centre, on outdoor hard courts. A women's competition was also held briefly, from 1980-1982; and then once more in 1993, as a Tier IV event. Michael Chang held the record number of wins with three; Wendy Turnbull won two in the women's competition.

Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港) is one of two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the other being Macau. A city-state situated on China's south coast and enclosed by the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea, it is known for its expansive skyline and deep natural harbour. With a land mass of 1,104 km² (426 sq mi) and a population of seven million people, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Hong Kong's population is 95 percent ethnic Chinese and 5 percent from other groups. Hong Kong's Han Chinese majority originate mainly from the cities of Guangzhou and Taishan in the neighbouring Guangdong province.

Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the First Opium War (1839–42). Originally confined to Hong Kong Island, the colony's boundaries were extended in stages to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and then the New Territories in 1898. It was occupied by Japan during the Pacific War, after which the British resumed control until 1997, when China resumed sovereignty. The region espoused minimum government intervention under the ethos of positive non-interventionism during the colonial era. The time period greatly influenced the current culture of Hong Kong, often described as "East meets West", and the educational system, which used to loosely follow the system in England until reforms implemented in 2009.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei (simplified Chinese: 李宗伟; traditional Chinese: 李宗偉; pinyin: Lǐ Zōngwěi; born October 21, 1982 in Georgetown, Penang) is a professional badminton player from Malaysia who resides in Bukit Mertajam. Lee won the silver medal in the 2008 Olympic Games, thus becoming the first Malaysian to reach the final of the men's singles event and ending Malaysia's Olympic medal drought since the 1996 Games. This achievement also earned him the title Datuk, and a description by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak as a national hero.

As a singles player, Lee was ranked first worldwide on August 21, 2008. He is the third Malaysian men's singles shuttler after Rashid Sidek and Roslin Hashim to achieve such a ranking (since official rankings were first kept in the 1980s), and is the only Malaysian shuttler to hold the ranking for more than two weeks.

Lee is one of the most accomplished Malaysian badminton players having won two All-England championships. However, he is still searching for his first Olympic Games, World Championship and Asian Games titles as the world number 1.

Sony Dwi Kuncoro (born July 7, 1984 in Surabaya, Jawa Timur, Indonesia) is a male badminton singles player from Indonesia.

When he was young, he joined the Suryanaga Surabaya badminton club. His parents are Moch. Sumadji (father) and Asmiati (mother). His hobbies are fixing automobiles and hanging-out or travelling. Generally people call him Sony, which can also be spelled as Soni.

Kuncoro played badminton at the 2004 Summer Olympics in men's singles, defeating M. Roslin Hashim of Malaysia and Jim Ronny Andersen of Norway in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, Kuncoro defeated Park Tae-sang of Korea 15-13, 15-4. Kuncoro advanced to the semifinals, in which he lost to Shon Seung-mo of Korea 15-6, 9-15, 15-9. Playing in the bronze medal match, he defeated Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand by a score of 15-11, 17-16 for the bronze medal.

He became runner up at the 2007 IBF World Championships after losing to Lin Dan in straight sets with score 11-21 20-22 in Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Malaysia.But, in his road through the final, he defeated Lee Chong Wei in the third round 21-9 21-11, Peter Gade in the quarter final, 22-20 21-18. He also beat Chen Yu in the semifinal with 3 tough game

Taufik Hidayat (born August 10, 1981 in Bandung, West Java) is an Indonesian badminton player. He is a former World and Olympic champion in men's singles. He has also won the Indonesian Open six times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006).

When he was young, he joined the SGS Club, a badminton club in Bandung, where he trained under Iie Sumirat.

Hidayat won the men's singles competition in badminton at the 2004 Summer Olympics. In August 2005, he won the men's singles competition at the IBF World Championships. He also won the gold medal at the Asian Games twice, at Busan in 2002 and Doha in 2006.

Popular media has at times focused on the perceived rivalry between Hidayat and Chinese player Lin Dan, referring to the two as "arch rivals".

Hidayat's main qualities are his backhand (as he is perhaps most famous for his backhand smash, revered for its unusually high generation of power), forehand jump smash, drop shot (reverse slice in particular), smooth footwork and deceiving net play. Hidayat's forehand jump smash in the 2006 world championships is currently the fastest smash recorded in single's competition: he recorded a 305 km/h in a match against Ng Wei.
