Maya Lin on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Complete video at: fora.tv Artist Maya Lin discusses the meaning behind her once-controversial design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC ----- Maya Lin: Systematic Landscapes is a major exhibition of new sculptures, drawings, and installations by renowned artist Maya Lin. In 1981, Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial dramatically changed the language and form of commemorative sculpture by infusing minimalist design with the emotional charge of memory. Her subsequent work, whether monument, sculpture, design object, or building is equally characterized by its harmony of message and material. In recent years, Lin has focused on a reconsideration of landscape in a time of ecological tension and change. This new body of work engages the issue of our fragile connection to the environment in timely and poetic ways - De Young Museum Born in 1959 in Athens, Ohio, Maya Lin catapulted into the public eye when, as a senior at Yale University, she submitted the winning design in a national competition for a Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be built in Washington, DC She was trained as an artist and architect, and her sculptures, parks, monuments, and architectural projects are linked by her ideal of making a place for individuals within the landscape. Lin, a Chinese-American, came from a cultivated and artistic home. Her father was the dean of fine arts at Ohio University; her mother is a professor of literature at Ohio University. She draws inspiration for her sculpture and ...

Maya Lin at American Art - Updated Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNQUQLzKRk0
For More Webcasts: americanart.si.edu Maya Lin, one of the few individuals who has forged a path in both art and architecture, is at once a sculptor, architect, and designer. In all of her projects, Lin brings a contemporary perspective to the landscape by merging the rational order of high technology with organic forms. While Lin has created many socially motivated works of art, she is intent on avoiding didacticism and politics. Her monuments, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1982) in Washington, DC, and the Civil Rights Memorial (1988—1993) in Montgomery, Alabama, have been highly acclaimed for creating an intensely private experience in a public context. Lin has won numerous awards, including the Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. For More Webcasts: americanart.si.edu

Ovation TV | MAYA LIN: An American Revolutionary
After creating the Vietnam War Memorial, Maya Lin became, at the age of twenty-one, one of America's most significant architects and designers. She was born in 1959 in Athens, Ohio, to an academic family -- her father was the Dean of Fine Arts and her mother a professor of literature at Ohio University. In Lin's senior year at Yale Univeristy, she entered the national competition with her design for the Vietnam War Memorial. Chosen from 1421 unlabeled submissions, Lin's simple black walls with the names of all dead and missing in chronological order has become the most visited monument in Washington. Lin has since designed the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, the enormous translucent clock in the ceiling of New York City's Pennsylvania Station, an ecology based installation along the Columbia River to commemorate the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the Museum of African Art in New York, along with other projects, private homes, and furniture designs. Maya Lin: Between Art and Architecture (Part 1)
The artist-architect-designer Maya Lin presented a lecture "Between Art and Architecture" at the Graham Chapel on Thursday, September 6 as part of the Fall 2007 Assembly Series at Washington University in St. Louis. Lin's talk was presented by the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, host for her major exhibition, "Maya Lin: Systematic Landscapes" from Sept. 7 through Dec. 30. The exhibition showcased her more recent artistic interests that explored the meaning of landscape in a time of ecological tension and technological change, and expressed the fragile connection we have to our environment. From 1981, when the 21-year-old Yale University student won the contest for designing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, to her current projects featuring sculptures, drawings and large-scale installations, Lin has resisted categorization and has built a remarkable body of work establishing herself as one of the most significant artists of her time. Whether it is a public monument, sculpture, design object, or building, her images are characterized by their harmony of message and material, often blurring the boundaries of art, architecture and design. She achieved prominence early in her career by literally redefining America's idea of a memorial. Since then she has continued to create monuments, including the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Ala., as well as a variety of large-scale, site-specific installations.

POV - Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision . 30 Sec | PBS
The Vietnam War Memorial was one of the most controversial monuments of its time. Thrust in to the eye of the storm was architect-sculptor Maya Lin, whose design for the memorial was chosen when she was a 21-year-old college student. Withstanding bitter attacks, she held her ground with clarity and grace. In this Academy Award winner, Freida Lee Mock follows a decade in the life of this visionary artist.
