Description

The ushnisha was not described initially in the Physical characteristics of the Buddha spelled out by the Buddhist canon. Rather, there are several mentions about a topknot:

Representation

The first representations of the Buddha in the 1st century CE in the Greco-Buddhist art of Gandhara also represent him with a topknot, rather than just a cranial knob. It is thought that the interpretation of the ushnisha as a supernatural cranial protuberance happened at a later date, as the representation of the topknot became more symbolic and its original meaning was lost.

In Early Buddhism, the uṣṇīṣa was represented differently. The Mahāvastu (1.259f) and the Divyāvadāna, as well as the Theravadin Milindapañha, describe the marks of the cakravartin or "idealised world-ruler": uṣṇīṣa or patka turban, chhatra "parasol", "horn jewel" or vajra, whisk and sandals. Silicon tetraiodide

Silicon tetraiodide is the chemical compound with the formula SiI₄. It is a tetrahedral molecule with Si-I bond lengths of 2.432(5) Å.

SiI₄ is a precursor to silicon amides of the formula Si(NR₂)₄ (R = alkyl). It has also been of interest in the manufacture and etching of silicon in microelectronics.

Reactions

The compound is stable to strong heating and can be stored for long periods at room temperature but must be kept dry as it reacts quickly with water and also reacts slowly with moisture in the air in a similar way to silicon tetrachloride. It can be made on a large scale by reaction of silicon or silicon carbide with iodine on heating to about 200 °C. Of more academic interest is the reaction of silane with iodine vapour at 130 - 150 °C, as this produces a series of compounds ranging from iodosilane SiH₃I to diiodosilane SiH₂I₂ and triiodosilane SiHI₃ as well. These compounds are colourless liquids at room temperature. The last one can be readily distinguished from the similar carbon compound, iodoform which is a yellow solid at room temperature.

The uvea (Lat. uva, grape), also called the uveal layer, uveal coat, uveal tract, or vascular tunic, is the pigmented middle of the three concentric layers that make up an eye. The name is possibly a reference to its reddish-blue or almost black colour, wrinkled appearance and grape-like size and shape when stripped intact from a cadaveric eye. Its use as a technical term in anatomy and ophthalmology is relatively modern.

Uvea (Wallis and Futuna)

ʻUvea (Wallisian: ʻUvea, French: Royaume coutumiers de Uvea) is one of the three official chiefdoms (Royaume coutumiers) of the French territory of Wallis and Futuna (the other two being Sigave and Alo) in Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean.

History

ʻUvea has probably been inhabited by Polynesians since the 15th century CE and was then part of the Tu'i Tonga Empire. The two archaeological sites of Talietumu and Tonga Toto are remains from that period.

The kingdom of ʻUvea was founded sometimes in the 15th century and the monarch was titled Tuʻi ʻUvea (king).

April 5, 1887 the island became a French Protectorate after queen Amelia Tokagahahau Aliki signed a treaty with France but keeping her royal powers.
