Senate Banking Committee, U.S. Foreign Policy, Contraceptives Controversy, Tax Breaks (2012)
http://thefilmarchive.org/ February 2, 2012 More Democratic politicians favor these mandates than Republican politicians.[13] Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi favor the Obama policy.[7] Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) said that Americans are divided on this issue: "While some Americans may not feel that forcing them to pay for contraception are an infringement on their religious beliefs, others consider it to be an assault against their freedom of conscience."[14] The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops says that contraception is not basic health care but "an elective intervention that stops the healthy functioning of healthy women's reproductive systems",[15] unlike treating infertility, which is a medical disorder. Some people see the matter as primarily one of women's health, such as the National Women's Law Center.[16] Others see it as a matter of religious freedom. A senior fellow at the Cato Institute wrote: What makes the contraception (as well as sterilization and abortifacient) mandate especially ominous is the direct assault on basic religious beliefs.[17] . Certain consumers of mandatory health insurance, such as students matriculated at colleges of further education, have criticized what they perceive to be discrimination in provision or in practice: employer-provided plans that cover University faculty and staff may be subject to legal mandates whereas plans that cover the student body may not. Sandra Fluke was invited to present oral arguments on behalf of certain female student consumers dissatisfied with restrictions attached to registration for undergraduate and graduate attendance at Georgetown University School of Law. No contraceptive mandate applies to private parties entering into an association for commercial gain. Students are only required to purchase the University's plan if thay are not covered elsewhere, for example under a family members' (parents, spouse) plan. or are able to demonstrate their ability to self-insure at equivalent policy limits for certain levels of medical care. Fr. James V. Schall, professor at Georgetown's Department of Government, addressed a much broader framing. Constitutional questions of liberty of citizens from oppressive government interference, grounded in natural law arguments of Aquinas based on the classical metaphysics of Aristotle.[18] The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee says, "House Republicans have launched an all-out war on women since taking the Speaker's gavel over a year ago",[19] referring to the "hearing on women's health with five men and no women" (February 2012) Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) said Republicans "want to take us back to the Dark Ages ... when women were property."[20] Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) said Mitt Romney would "allow big corporations to deny health care options to their female employees."[21] Brent Bozell said that supporters of contraceptive mandates "have defined anyone who would oppose this mandate as waging" a war against women.[22] Ted Cruz called the issue "a battle at the heart of a wider war on religious liberty".[23] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contraceptive_mandate- published: 10 Feb 2014

Obama's Nomination of Senator John Kerry as Secretary of State (2012)
John Forbes Kerry (born December 11, 1943) is the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts, in office since 1985, and Barack Obama's designee to replace current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He is the ninth most senior United States Senator and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He was the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party in the 2004 presidential election, but lost to President George W. Bush. The son of an Army Air Corps veteran, Kerry was born in Aurora, Colorado. He attended boarding school in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and went on to graduate from Yale University class of 1966, where he majored in political science and became a member of the influential Skull and Bones secret society. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1966, and during 1968-1969 served an abbreviated four-month tour of duty in South Vietnam as officer-in-charge (OIC) of a Swift Boat. For that service, he was awarded combat medals that include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Securing an early return to the United States, Kerry joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War in which he served as a nationally recognized spokesman and as an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War. He appeared before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs where he deemed United States war policy in Vietnam to be the cause of "war crimes". After receiving his J.D. from Boston College Law School, Kerry worked as an Assistant District Attorney and co-founded a private firm. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts under Michael Dukakis from 1983 to 1985, where he worked on an early forerunner to the national Clean Air Act. He won a tight Democratic primary in 1984 for the U. S. Senate and was sworn in the following January. On the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he led a series of hearings from 1987 to 1989 which were a precursor to the Iran--Contra affair. He was an early backer of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, but became a strong opponent of the subsequent war. Kerry based his 2004 presidential campaign on opposition to the Iraq War. He and his running mate Senator John Edwards lost the race, finishing only 35 electoral votes behind the Republican ticket headed by President George W. Bush (and only 19 behind the 270 required for election). Since then, he has established the Keeping America's Promise PAC. He became chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2009, and in 2011 he was appointed to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. On December 15, 2012, several news outlets reported that President Barack Obama would nominate Kerry to succeed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. This came after Susan Rice, widely seen as Obama's preferred choice, withdrew her name from consideration citing a politicized confirmation process following criticism of her response to the 2012 Benghazi attack. On December 21 Obama officially made the nomination. The nomination received positive commentary and confirmation by the Senate was expected to be straightforward. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_kerry- published: 10 Feb 2014
