Elk vs. Photographer | Great Smoky Mountains National Park
While photographing elk at sunrise in the Cataloochee Valley of Great Smoky Mountains National Park I turned around to see what appeared to be just a curious young bull sniffing a photographer's camera. I snapped a few frames of the apparent harmless encounter. But the elk became more interested in making trouble than simply the scent of a camera. He started physically harassing the photographer, escallating to full on head-butts. I quickly switched the camera to video and let it roll (much of the time wondering when I should seriously consider intervening). Most people who see this ask why the photographer seems to just take the abuse. I asked him in an email what was going through his head. This is his response: "My first thoughts were "wow, he's getting pretty damn close here." But I've been up close before without incident. I hoped being still and passive would see him pass on. When he lowered his antlers to me, I wanted to keep my vitals protected and my head down. I felt that standing up would provoke him more and leave me more vulnerable to goring. I think that while protecting myself with my head down, having my head down was a signal that I was rutting with him. I was concerned at first, but when he started rearing back and lunging at me later on, I got scared and pissed off. That's when I wagged my finger at him to cut that shit out. I was relieved to see the Ranger coming. So I guess at some point if the Ranger hadn't of pulled up, I would have had to disengage the best I could. I've joked with my friends that at least he took me for a buck and not a cow!"- published: 12 Nov 2013

Elk on our Trampoline
Elk on our Trampoline
OMG - Just when you thought you had seen it all.......and we see a lot of crazy Elk behavior here in Evergreen, CO....but this Takes The Cake for sure! We were just sitting down for our morning coffee when I watched this young elk poking his head into the entrance of the trampoline..when all of a sudden he decides to jump in for some fun! Getting out proves to be a bit harder than getting in!!! The Elk's friend on the outside actually looks like he wants to get in and join the fun while the Mom looks on. For any viewers offended by my wife's comment on the notion of shooting it....the only reason my wife suggested doing so was to keep it from suffering if it got too badly hurt due to the hole in the tramp. We recently watched in horror as a fox was strangled to death in our neighbor's soccer goal netting. My reaction to her comment gave her the reality check she needed as she was a bit over-reactive due to her sensitivity to its wellbeing and not wanting to see it suffer like the poor little fox! Hope you enjoyed the video!!!- published: 04 Nov 2013

Motorcycle chased down highway by elk in rut
Motorcycle chased down highway by elk in rut
On Sunday, October 3rd, my boyfriend Glen and I decided to take a ride from Missoula, MT to Ovando, MT. On our way back, we headed south on hwy 200. I was looking around at the gorgeous scenery when Glen started to slow down as he saw a truck stopped in front of us. We stopped behind the truck and saw a bull elk approach the truck. The person in the truck must have had some food because the elk jumped up on his hind legs and peered in to the drivers window. (I have that on video as well) Then the elk jumped down and started to approach us. There were two actually. One was a bit smaller and had different looking antlers. I am not much of a hunter so I don't know why they appeared different than the other. I was surprised that the elk came so close to us and I could feel a great deal of tension between us and the animal. I am willing to bet that if Glen hadn't hit the throttle when he had, that elk would have jumped up on us. The elk chased us for a while and I don't know when he would have stopped hadn't I told Glen to lose it. I didn't want the animal to chase us on the road and put it in any danger so losing it seemed appropriate. I had enough excitement for one day! A video shot on the iPhone 4S
Holy cow. Time to throw my 7D in the bin*
Got an iPhone 4S yesterday and got up this morning to go for a surf. No surf, so thought I'd shoot some stuff to see what the new camera is like on the 4S. Got home, looked at the footage, and couldn't believe it came out of a phone. Was so excited so thought I'd quickly cut a vid to share the goodness.
It's actually amazing. The automatic stabilisation seems to work wonders, and gets rid of most the jello. Depth of field is flipping awesome. Colours are really good straight out the camera, but I did give this footage a slight grade with the 3-way colour wheel in Final Cut.
Cut/graded with Final Cut 7.

Lyrics translated from Icelandic
Bíum bíum bambaló,
Bambaló and dillidillidó
My little friend I lull to rest
But outside, a face looms at the window
When the mighty mountains
Fill your chest with burning desire,
I will play the langspil
And soothe your mind
Bíum bíum bambaló,
Bambaló and dillidillidó
My little friend I lull to rest
But outside, a face looms at the window
When the cruel storms rage
And the dark blizzard crouches above,
I shall light five candles
And drive away the winter shadows
