Fantastic trip to North Korea with Koryo Tours in September, 2013, I really like North Korean towns. I lived in China for a few years and love the small townst here. But in North Korea, the towns are similar, but the towns seem so safe and relaxed and peaceful. Everyone has a similar badge on their shirt, a similar background and is all part of the same overall framework. No political statement, but it feels good, somehow. Peaceful, safe, clean and pleasant. Almost science fiction like. When I felt Pyongyang and landed in Beijing, it felt like I had left civilization and landed in a loud cacophony. Some people say North Koreans will be so surprised when they find out how wonderful the rest of the world is, but I have a feeling a lot will feel like heading back home and will always miss their homeland. In Kaesong we stayed in a traditional house, having to sleep on the floor with something the thickness of a doubled up blanket between our bones and the floor. This together with the hard pillow roll was a killer. Dining at the low table was hard work as well as there is nowhere for the legs to go. One can vary between kneeling, long sitting and sitting crosslegged so if you have a bad back and a bad knee there is no dinner for you... DMZ is short for 'demilitarized zone', which is the border between North and South Korea. In 2007 we experienced the border from the South Korean side and it may come as a surprise but the American driven propaganda on the South Korean side was much worse and severe than what we experienced in North Korea, where the presentation was much more objective and the approach to the border more relaxed.

Well, the factory is in North Korea, at Kaesong Industrial Park. Oddly, Obama removed goods made there from his "North Korea Sanctions" .. which means cheap electrical products from LG, Samsung, Hyundai, Hankook Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, etc for Americans .. and a billion American dollars flowing into North Korea yearly. Odd that, yes? "If anyone tampers with the industrial zone in even the slightest way, we will regard it as heinous sanctions against us and take stern measures in response, including withdrawing all preferential treatment for the Kaesong Industrial Complex and turning that region back into an area for our military," a Feb. 6 2013 statement from North Korea said. Background: Kaesong is home to 123 South Korean companies making basic goods like clothes, shoes and household items.. The park now covers over 25 square miles, employs just over 500,000 people (95% North Korean) and has a private rail link to South Korea and their ports. Goods reach the USA in 4 weeks. The electricity, water, internet and telephone service is supplied from both North and South Korea. Wages average $50 USD per month - much less than in South Korea ... and even lower than China ..... ... and that's how Americans can get cheap goods " from South Korea" .. and perhaps why America has so many soldiers there ...

The Kaesong industrial complex run jointly by North and South Korea reopens after more than four months. Full story: It's been more than four months since this border crossing between South and North Korea was so busy. That's been since the jointly-run Kaesong industrial park shut in April as tensions between them were rising sharply. On Monday South Korean workers started heading back over the border as the joint Kaesong industrial park reopened for a trial period. [Cho Bong-Sook, South Korean Worker]: "I cannot tell you how glad I am. I hope it can be a good opportunity for the South and North to harmonise." [Kim Cheong-Jin, South Korean Worker]: "It should go well. There are many people who felt hurt, so I hope it doesn't happen again." Kaesong is the last remaining symbol of co-operation between the rival nations. It employs some 53,000 North Koreans. Lines of trucks and cars crossed South Korea's northern border on the way to Kaesong, North Korea. About 800 South Korean workers and their supervisors entered the jointly operated Kaesong Industrial Complex. They brought materials and parts to restart production for the first time in months. South Korean managers expressed happiness at returning to work. Ji Yoon-tae is deputy chief of a South Korean company in Kaesong. He said it was very hard while the factories were closed. From now on, he says, he hopes everything works out well and the factory zone comes back to life. In April, North Korea removed about 53,000 workers from the joint manufacturing effort. Their withdrawal resulted from military tensions with South Korea and the United States. South Korean companies say they lost about $1 billion from the suspension of work at the factories. The industrial area produces cloth, watches and parts for electronic products. After months of negotiations, the two Koreas reached a deal to reopen the area. They agreed to set up a joint committee to settle future problems. Officials from the two sides have been holding weekly meetings to discuss other details. The re-opening is seen as the most important sign of warming relations between North and South Korea since the North carried out missile and nuclear tests. Choi Kyong-lim is South Korea's deputy minister of trade, industry and energy. He told reporters in Seoul that the government hopes many Chinese companies will invest in Kaesong. S Korea postpones investors' event for Kaesong

South Korea has postponed an event for foreign investors at a joint inter-Korean industrial complex. It was scheduled to be held at the end of this month in the North Korean border city of Kaesong. The event was to attract foreign investors to set up at the complex. Operations there were resumed last month after about 5 months of suspension. But a South Korea Unification Ministry official said on Monday that it would be hard to hold the event under the conditions that both sides agreed to in August. He said his ministry conveyed this to North Korea. The official said the postponement reflects the lack of progress in bilateral talks to enhance cross-border communication and travel between Kaesong and South Korea. On September 21st, North Korea announced the postponement of a reunion of families 4 days before it was due to take place. They have been separated since the Korean War. This month, North Korea has also been stepping up its criticism of the South Korean government.
