Les Allen and his Canadian Bachelors - "Mine Alone" (1936)
The flip side of "Moon for Sale". Recorded in January, 1936. From the 1935 film "I Live for Love" directed by Busby Berkley and starring Dolores del Rio. Les Allen was one of Britains most popular vocalists, born in London in 1902, he was brought to Canada as an infant. It was here he learned to play the clarinet and saxophone. In 1924 he was hired by bandleader Hal Swain and made his way to England to play at the "New Princes" restaurant. Swain usually sang the vocal on records himself during this time, but Allen joined in on duets. It wasn't before he came to Alfredo's band in 1927 that his vocal skills were developed. In 1930-32, he did a huge amount of freelance work, including duets with Al Bowlly on the Edison Bell label. In 1932, he joined Henry Hall and the BBC Dance Orchestra, where he stayed until 1934. After his tenure with Hall, Les Allen was a big star, and toured with great success. One of his biggest hits of this period was "Little Man, You've Had A Busy Day", a cute number he recorded with his wife and son. In 1938 he appeared at the Royal Variety Performance. After the war he toured in the musical "Miss Hook of Holland" before returning to Canada in 1948 where he started an office supply business. He retired in 1971 and died in 1996.- published: 14 Apr 2014

Les Allen and his Canadian Bachelors - "Moon For Sale" (1936)
This record is a little later than what I usually post, but I can't resist this tune, with a catchy melody and very corny lyrics. Recorded in January, 1936. Reach has supported the development of Evanstown & Gilfach Goch Historical Society's project, to preserve their local history and heritage and share their stories with previous Evanstown & Gilfach Goch residents who now live abroad and to the younger generations of the Valley. They successfully received a Heritage Lottery Grant to help with the design and print of a booklet entitled: Memories of Evanstown & Gilfach Goch. Don't ever Change, Les Allen, 1930's
As well as collecting purely dance band records I do like the numerous solo ones made by the great singers of the 1930's period. These seem to have been over looked, certainly in CD compilations. You get a lot more singing and less "Band" for your money. Here's a lovely Les Allen one from my collection.- published: 28 Mar 2014
