KYW 1060 AM HD Radio Test
This broadcast was received on a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X596 from Lancaster, PA.
One of the drawbacks of AM HD (and sometimes FM HD) is that even a small amount of interference causes the HD signal to fall back to standard AM, besides the fact that this is over 60 miles away from the transmitter. Also, the quality sounds like a 64k MP3 or low bitrate Internet stream.

Please Touch Museum (PTM) transported visitors to a galaxy far, far away during "May the 4th Be With You," on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, from 9:00am to 7:00pm. Space-themed programs and Star Wars toy displays helped children learn through play, while celebrating "unofficial Star Wars Day." Activities for "May the 4th Be With You" were included in the regular price of admission.
Since its premiere in 1977, Star Wars has played an important role in pop culture and childhood play. Movies, comic books, lunchboxes, activity books, toys and action figures provided children with important tools to expand their imaginations. Many of these items have remained popular over the last thirty years, and have since become collectables for children of all ages. Please Touch Museum presented a wide array of these vintage and contemporary Star Wars toys from the museum's greater collection of over 20,000 toys and play objects.
In addition to the toy collections, PTM hosted Jedi Knights, from PA Jedi, that will met the little "citizens of the "empire." At 12:30pm and 6:00pm, children danced to music from the Star Wars movies, as well as other music from those eras, during the "Far Far Out Dance Party." Princess Amidala hosted story-time in the Story Castle at 12:30pm and 3:30pm. Between 5:00pm and 7:00pm, the 501st Garrison Carida presented Stormtroopers, Darth Vader, Darth Maul and Boba Fett for photographs with children. The villains will also led the "Imperial March" End of Day Parade.
On-going museum programming included a trip to the outer reaches of the galaxy in the permanent space-themed gallery, "Flight Fantasy." The Elaine-Wideman Vaughn Program Room, adjacent to "Flight Fantasy," also hosted star map painting, along with other activities.

1060 KYW 1985 Hostage Situation. Boys Tell Of Their Hostage Ordeal. AP, Associated Press. Dec. 11, 1985 6:26 AM ET. PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ After being cooped up in a room with an armed captor for seven hours, 17- year-old Mike Wissman decided to ''go for it'' because he could no longer stand the man's demands for cocaine and President Reagan's resignation. First, though, Wissman noticed a blockage in the barrel of the gun that police say 22-year-old Steven Gold used to take six hostages Monday at Archbishop Ryan High School for Boys. ''It was just an impulse,'' Wissman said Tuesday. ''We were in there for like seven hours. I was just getting fed up with it. Then I realized ... this guy just had a toy. And we decided, you know, go for it - so we did.'' After an exchange of winks, nods and signals, Wissman and the two remaining teen-age hostages jumped their captor, wrestling away a 5-inch knife and what turned out to be a tear-gas gun. Gold, an outpatient at a community mental health center, was held today in lieu of $1 million bail on charges of kidnapping, assault, possession of an instrument of crime and felonious assault. Wissman and the other two hostages - Patrick Hood, 15, and Ray Smith, 16 - said Gold seemed unsteady near the end of the ordeal at the Roman Catholic school. He seemed to crave the cocaine he had demanded repeatedly from police, and was shaken after a police negotiator tried to speak with him while deliverying food to the room, the students said. ''You could see him shaking every time he tried to light a cigarette,'' Hood said. ''He was burned out.''
Gold was sitting on the floor when the three lunged, the students said. Wissman grabbed Gold's right hand and when the gun fell loose, Hood took it and ran into a hall, calling for police. Wissman said he hit Gold ''as hard as I could'' with his elbow and tore the knife from his shirt pocket. Another student taken hostage escaped when he was allowed to leave to get a soda shortly after Gold entered the school and pulled a gun, police said. Gold released two school administrators after a police negotiator agreed to allow a radio station to broadcast a statement demanding Reagan's resignation to allow Gold to take the president's place. Had Gold fired the loaded pistol, it would have released enough tear gas powder ''to maybe irritate somebody's eyes'' but could not have fired bullets, police Capt. Thomas Seamon said. Hood said he noticed something ''black inside the barrel'' of Gold's gun that made him suspicious, because he had been taught to shoot by his father, a Philadelphia police officer. Hood told Smith and the two signaled Wissman, who after concluding the gun wasn't real tried to spell out ''toy'' with his hands, he said. Wissman's mother, Margaret, 54, said that when she was reunited with her son, ''I cried, and I said, 'Now it's Christmas.'''
'85 H.s. Hostage-taker Is Returned To Hospital. By DAVE RACHER, Daily News Staff Writer. February 18, 1988. Steven Gold, who held six persons hostage at Archbishop Ryan High School for Boys in December 1985, pleaded guilty yesterday to a kidnapping charge. Gold, 24, was placed on 15 years' probation, but was recommitted to Norristown State Hospital, where he has been under psychiatric care while awaiting trial. Gold's plea of "guilty but mentally ill" allowed Common Pleas Judge Fredrica Massiah-Jackson to order him back to the hospital until doctors feel he does not pose a danger to the community. Assistant District Attorney Barbara McDermott said she expected Gold to remain hospitalized for "a long time" because he is a chronic schizophrenic. McDermott said that "guilty but mentally ill," a relatively new finding, means that although the person was ill, he knew right from wrong when he committed the crime.

Radio is the wireless transmission of signals through free space by electromagnetic radiation of a frequency significantly below that of visible light, in the radio frequency range, from about 30 kHz to 300 GHz. These waves are called radio waves. Electromagnetic radiation travels by means of oscillating electromagnetic fields that pass through the air and the vacuum of space.
Information, such as sound, is carried by systematically changing (modulating) some property of the radiated waves, such as their amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse width. When radio waves strike an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. The information in the waves can be extracted and transformed back into its original form...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KYW_(AM)
KYW is a class A AM radio station on 1060 kHz licensed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. KYW is owned by the CBS Radio unit of CBS Corporation, and has broadcast an all-news format since 1965. The station's studios are located on Market Street in Center City Philadelphia, and its transmitters are located in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania. The signal can be received to up to 60 miles. KYW can be heard in Southern New Jersey (including the Jersey Shore), Harrisburg, Lancaster, and York...
Origins
KYW began in 1921 in Chicago. It was jointly owned by Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Commonwealth Edison. Westinghouse later bought out ComEd's share and became sole owner. In 1927 Westinghouse aligned its four radio stations (KYW, KDKA in Pittsburgh, WBZ in Boston, and WBZA in Springfield, Massachusetts) with the NBC Blue Network, which originated from former sister station WJZ (the present-day WABC) in New York City. Westinghouse had been a founding partner of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), NBC's original parent company.
Move to Philadelphia
In 1934, the assignment of clear channels took a frequency away from Illinois and gave it to Pennsylvania, resulting in Westinghouse moving KYW to Philadelphia. Upon arriving, KYW supplanted WFI and WLIT (which merged as WFIL in 1935) as Philadelphia's Blue Network affiliate—an affiliation that lasted 20 years. (According to the June 14, 1940 edition of the Philadelphia Daily News, KYW used the frequency of 1020 kHz at the time.)
In March 1941, KYW changed frequencies to 1060 kHz as part of a nationwide shift of radio frequencies mandated by the North American Radio Broadcasting Agreement. KYW and the other Westinghouse radio stations remained with NBC after RCA was ordered by the FCC to break up its radio networks, aligning with the former Red Network (the predecessor of modern-day NBC) in 1942. KYW acquired a television counterpart when Westinghouse bought WPTZ (channel 3) -- the nation's third commercial television station and NBC's second television affiliate -- in 1953...

Public domain film from the Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

My father, John B. Lawrence Jr., was a respected investigative reporter in Philadelphia in a turbulent and historic era - the 1960's. He worked for both WCAU-TV and KYW-TV. He died alone in an accident in his home in 1997 at age 62. For decades my family had safely stored a few reels of 16mm mag-stripe film that he had long ago brought home from work. Only recently did I have the film converted to a digital format, and only then was the discovery made as to what those reels contained. Here are three stories he worked on, none of which I believe made it to air, hence perhaps the reason he was able to bring them home. Clearly the one story on the possible detonation of a nuclear bomb underground in rural Pennsylvania was not fully edited, and it is my guess as well that the other two stories may not have aired for differing reasons - that happens in the news business. He was a decent man. As an only-child with no cousins, who from childhood on was seldom if at all in the company of his aunts and uncles, and raised as a Presbyterian in a predominantly Catholic neighborhood in East Germantown, his early life was filled with indescribable loneliness, and he suffered from a terrific stutter. Excepting an uncle on his mother's side, he became the first in his family to graduate from college, and by his mid-thirties he was well-known in Philadelphia for his investigative reporting. By the time he was forty however, he had lost his way: he had left the news business and tried to make his living as a novelist, but failed. Other ventures failed, and he struggled with alcohol dependency, a thing which contributed to his death. When he was forty-seven the family left him. He loved Christmases, Thanksgivings, and giving gifts more than receiving. He was supportive of his three children and their respective goals, if at times somewhat inattentive. For those who miss and still love him, enjoy.

Inhalt:

Kenny Gamble & Georgie Woods, The man with the goods! A Philly legend. Georgie started on radio at WWRL in New York n 1952, and a year later moved down the turnpike to Philly, where stayed on the radio for over 50 years. The first voice on the aircheck is Kenny Gamble, of Gamble & Huff Music & Philadelphia International Records, who worked at WDAS for many years. This was Alumni Day. A yearly tradition at WDAS when they would bring back jocks from the past. If you want to learn more about Georgie Woods and how he & WDAS played a roll in in the civil rights movement, check out http://www.wdashistory.org

30 minutes of AM Stereo
This is a recording of WCOR in the early morning hours of January 12, 2014. WCOR is a class C AM broadcast station in Lebanon, Tennessee operating at 1 kW full time. It, like WANT, a co-owned FM station, broadcast various community related programs and has locally produced shows on a daily basis. WCOR simulcasts WANT for the most part and differs in programming in some day parts usually to carry local sports programming. WANT and WCOR carries Cumulus Media's Real Country.
http://wantfm.com
This was recorded with a Tascam DR-07 digital recorder in uncompressed PCM from a Sony SRF-A100 FM/AM Stereo receiver and uploaded in uncompressed PCM. The only data compression is from YouTube processing.
The Sony has a touch of distortion for some reason, so any distortion you hear is from the receiver and not so much the station.
With a wideband receiver, it's pretty easy to hear how AM Stereo can make AM stations sound, even with current bandwidth limitations. Try getting that with digital HD radio on the same band, especially with the systems use of Spectral Band Replication (or SBR).
A great example of how great AM Stereo sounds starts at 16 minutes, but the entire recording sounds good.

WBRE & WYOU 60TH ANNIVERSARY 1953 02013
It signed-on New Year's Day 1953 becoming the first television station in the market. It was owned by the Baltimore family along with WBRE radio (1340 AM now WYCK and 98.5 FM now WKRZ). Although it appears that the call letters stand for Wilkes-BaRrE, they actually refer to Baltimore Radio Exchange, the Baltimore family's company. The radio stations were sold off in 1980.
For much of its early history, channel 28 was unable to get a direct feed from NBC because AT&T; microwave and wireline operations weren't available in northeast Pennsylvania. Station engineers were thus forced to switch to and from the signals of WNBT in New York City (now WNBC) and WPTZ in Philadelphia (now KYW-TV) when NBC programming was airing. WPTZ was used as a backup. In efforts to improve the quality and reliability of the received signals, WBRE built its own relay site on Pimple Hill on the west side of Route 115, just south of Pocono Raceway. Reception of the New York stations is very clear and reliable from this site; indeed, it served as a microwave retransmission site for many of the area's cable systems well into the 1990s when fiber optics made microwave transmission obsolete.
In 1972, disaster struck at WBRE when its offices were flooded by Hurricane Agnes. Most of the station's equipment was moved above ground and survived but a film archive in the basement was destroyed. After numerous changes of ownership, the Nexstar Broadcasting Group acquired the station in January 1998. Nexstar already owned WYOU but opted to keep WBRE and sold WYOU to Mission Broadcasting. However, Nexstar continues to control WYOU's operations through a joint sales agreement. On January 3, 2007, Nexstar named Louis J. Abitabilo as Vice President and General Manager for the two stations.
On February 17, 2009 as part of the optional transition to digital-only broadcasting, WBRE left UHF channel 28 and continued to operate its digital signal on VHF channel 11.
In September 2011, the station was evacuated once again due to potential flooding by heavy rains from Hurricane Lee. For 48 hours, the station operated remotely out of the garage of the local Fox affiliate, WOLF-TV. They provided coverage for the entire duration of the evacuation period, nearly 63 hours. Luckily, the station and the majority of Wilkes-Barre were protected by the levee.
