CORRIDOR OF KNOWLEDGE vol.89 Exploring Hyakunin Isshu
Supervisor: Tomomi Yoshino Associate Professor, Faculty of Letters, Chuo University Ogura Hyakunin Isshu was arranged by Fujiwara no Teika, a Japanese poet, at Ogurayama in Kyoto during the Kamakura Period. He picked outstanding Japanese waka from one hundred poets extending from the Nara Period to the Kamakura Period. He selected from Chokusen Wakashū imperial collections of Japanese poetry and listed the poems in chronological order. The original purpose was to decorate mountain villa screen fusuma with poems about love and the beauty of the seasons in an elegant and sophisticated fashion. In the Muromachi Period, Ogura Hyakunin Isshu became well known as a beginner's book for Kadō, which is the study of waka. After the Edo Period, people started to know more about it due to Karuta, a Japanese card game, and from academic books and as people's entertainment. Even to this day, Japanese people love Ogura Hyakunin Isshu as a very familiar waka collection. "Exploring Hyakunin Isshu" Let's take a look at Hyakunin Isshu and its historical background while walking in Kyoto; the place connected with Fujiwara no Teika. 2012 Production- published: 18 Nov 2013

After Yoshiakira's death, the temple changed its name to Hokyo-in, the posthumous name given to Yoshiakira.
The present buildings were reconstructed after the Meiji Period. The main hall is dedicated to the Deity of mercy who has eleven faces and one thousand arms.

The Sacred Garden of Jonangu: Rakusuien!
Toward the end of the Heian Period (794-1185), the retired Emperor Shirakawa built a majestic villa (Jonan Rikyu/Toba Rikyu) at this scenic location which lay along one of the major transportation routes into and out of the capital. Once he began to rule here in retirement, poetry-composition gatherings and banquets, and boating and equestrian events were frequently held, and the elegant culture of the court and nobles came into flower. Also, there developed the custom for those who were preparing to make a pilgrimage to Kumano to set off by purifying themselves at Jonan Rikyu, in prayer for safety along the way, and this gave rise to the belief that prayers offered here would protect one from natural disasters and assure safety during travels.
The sacred garden, named Rakusuien (“comfortable waters garden”) , that surrounds the elegant shrine buildings is composed of five different gardens. Starting from the manmade “Spring Hill” of the Jonan Rikyu, there is the Heian Garden, where the poetry event called Kyokusui-no-utage takes place; the Muromachi Garden, with its tasteful pond-edge rock arrangement; the Momoyama Garden, featuring beautiful trimmed bushes; and then the dry landscape Jonan Rikyu Garden. One can flavor the characteristics and atmosphere of these gardens that represent the various historical periods. In addition, more than one hundred varieties of plants that give literary color to the “Tale of Genji” have been planted and cultivated here and there, and so the entire shrine garden is known as “The flower garden of the Tale of Genji”. Seeing the plants glowing in the sunlight and swaying in the breeze, one can sense the grace of the Heian era, and the refined spirit of the nature-loving people of Japan.

Ujigami Shrine, Along the “Rekishi Kaido” in Uji City, Kyoto!
Situated in Uji City, Kyoto, the Ujigami shrine is dedicated to Emperor Oujin and Emperor Nintoku. The shrine's Honden (main hall) is Japan's oldest architecture of late Heian period that exists today. It is listed as World Heritage as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. Although its origin is unknown, according to a dendrochronology research, the shrine's construction was dated at somewhere around 1060. The nearby Byodo-in temple, also registered as World Heritage, was built in 1052 and the two buildings are presumed to have been built together.
Later in the Muromachi period, seven natural springs in the Uji area, known as Uji Shichi Meisui, were designated as water source to be used in tea ceremonies. One of the seven springs, Kirihara mizu, flows from the Ujigami Shrine. The other six springs have all dried up over the years, and today, Kirihara mizu is the last spring left today where good Uji water is discharged.

Nanzeji Temple Kyoto
Nanzenji Temple (南禅寺), whose spacious grounds are located at the base of Kyoto's forested Higashiyama mountains, is one of the most important Zen temples in all of Japan. It is the head temple of one of the schools within the Rinzai sect of Japanese Zen Buddhism and includes multiple subtemples, that make the already large complex of temple buildings even larger. The history of Nanzenji dates back to the mid 13th century, when the Emperor Kameyama built his retirement villa at the temple's present location and later converted it into a Zen temple. After its founding, Nanzenji grew steadily, but its buildings were all destroyed during the civil wars of the late Muromachi Period (1333-1573). The oldest of the current buildings were built after that period.- published: 23 Nov 2013
