Town of Ghosts
Bodie is by far the best preserved ghost town in the United States.
Gold was discovered back in 1859 by William S Bodey and at its apex, the town had a population of 10,000 residents through the 1880's. Bodie was replete with the makings of old west folklore; gunfighters, saloons, miners, gambling halls and prostitutes, a rough place through and through. But the town's success didn't last and faded from 'glory' prior to World War I and was finally down for the count during WWII once all mining operations were halted due to the war effort. It was effectively abandoned with many of the structures retaining the inhabitants belongings because the roads out were toll and weight based; many people simply decided to leave their belongings behind to avoid large fees so the ghost town was born.
Today, after two fires, around 100 structures remain, (5% of the original town) some of which are filled with furniture, lined and matted with layer up on layer of rotting and sagging wallpaper. Some buildings are seemingly untouched time-capsules to the once treacherous lives of the miners and other inhabitants of the town. Kids toys sitting by the window, a ball peen hammer on the ground, strewn gears in a machine shop, and rusted hangers hanging in a closet.
Walking the grounds, particularly the cemetery, I was overcome with a sense of foreboding and the gentle but incessant march of time continuing on. The once important lives buried under a wood tombstone were all but forgotten and those now nameless people who were loved or loved others, brothers, fathers, sisters and mothers, almost never existed unless you look at the uneven ground at a certain angle in the perfect light.
We spent a week shooting with access to some of the interiors of the buildings, and the ability to shoot at night. Because it is located in the Sierra Neveda and its unique geography and high elevation, the weather was quite extreme and could change in a matter of minutes; most nights were very cold and the temperature often sat in the low teens and were mixed with snow, wind, and icey rain.
Bodie is kept in a state of "arrested decay" and hangs (sometimes literally) in a sort of desolated limbo, as the dry lumber, rusted nails, and worn masonry, slowly give into the sands of time.
Special Thanks to Ranger Tom Gunther. Thank you for your help!!!

What is Mõ Ventus?
Mõ Ventus is an exciting and architecturally unique luxury zero-energy home that we want to build for, or with you.
This house is unconventional in that it’s designed as a luxury zero energy house, not bound by geography, climate or access to a power grid and can be built literally anywhere in the world, on or off the grid.
This innovative, sustainable private residence known as Mo Ventus was designed without a client in mind, and therefore is designed with inherent, built-in flexibility and 70% customization potential.
This private residence has four definitive characteristics and aspirations:
1) The first pertains to Mõ or Mõtus: The real-time transformation of the main living area and home-office/studio through the mõtus or movement of large composite retractable screens and insulated shells that allow for the micro-management of day-lighting, heat gain, openness, and privacy.
The Living Area (Kitchen, Dining & Living Room) has nearly unlimited combinations of screen and shell positions. The screens and exterior shell ride on track and are moved throughout the day as desired, producing a completely transformative environment, from open glass to patterned screens with diffuse light to solid walls all at the owners discretion or automatically adjusted to changing climatic conditions.
2) The second pertains to Ventus: Mo Ventus functions as a zero-energy design capable of being built in remote, on- or off-the-grid locations, with wind (or Ventus) and sunlight being the major energy contributors.
This house is organized so as to embrace and utilize the features of an unique landscape and dramatic sloping site. The topographically integrated cup or curved form is sited towards prevailing winds and is designed to increase by five-fold the wind speed and resultant energy. The resultant wind-produced energy is stored via hydrogen fuel cells on site for later use.
The photovoltaic array, four embedded bi-directional wind turbines, and fuel cells provide power to meet all operational needs enabling the house to be remotely located off the grid.
3) The third is that Mo Ventus offers the choice of full immersion in nature and real connectedness to its environment through an all glass skin around the main living area and home-office studio, providing 180 degree views top, bottom and sides. Mo Ventus takes up the challenge of maximizing sustainable features without losing the soul of the house -- Sustainability has equal priority but not sole priority in Mo Ventus. The house attempts to find a balance, through a renewed focus on spatial quality, real connectedness to the environment and uses mechanical means at times to balance openness and heat gain as necessary.
4) The fourth is that Mo Ventus provides an inspired home-office studio. A distanced and contemplative yet stimulating space that is physically separated via an open air cantilever bridge, but visually and psychologically connected to the body and life of the main house. Mo Ventus attempts to define a quintessential and inspirational home office environment for the not so faint of heart.
Mo Ventus is best suited for fresh- or saltwater beachfront locations with moderate slopes and temperate climates, but can be adapted for inland mountain topography with a range from tropical to alpine climates.
A list of some suitable international sites for Mo Ventus would include but is not exclusive to:
Paradise Valley, Arizona
Sonoma, California
Trancoso, Brazil
Maldives
Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica (Four Seasons)
Turtle Island, Fiji
Anguilla
Allen Island, Washington, US
Hong Kong
Krabi, Thailand
Aspen, Colorado
Hainan Island, China
Punta Mita, Mexico (Four Seasons)
On account of the floor plan’s linear configuration of bedrooms along the top edge, the footprint of the residence can range between 5,000-12,000 square feet depending on the owner’s desires and building site conditions.
Project construction costs are estimated at $3,500,000 to $10,000,000 US Dollar (depending on client needs, total square footage, site conditions, and local costs), more details are provided on the project website www.mo-ventus.com
Mo Ventus is represented by Ryan Ole Hass MBA of Nourmand & Associates, Beverly Hills, California, we’re excited for the possibility of working in conjunction with you and your contacts to move this project forward and see it built.
We would be interested in learning of your interest in building this unique, one of a kind house in a location of your preference anywhere in the world.
To speak with Ryan or Todd Theodore Fix about Mo Ventus, kindly contact Ryan Ole Hass.

Electronic Countermeasures @ GLOW Festival NL 2011
In the skies above the city a drone flock drifts into formation broadcasting their local file sharing network. Part nomadic infrastructure and part robotic swarm they form a pirate internet, an aerial napster, darting between the buildings....
Today we are much closer to our virtual community than we are to our real neighbours. This death of distance has created new forms of city based around ephemeral digital connections rather than physical geography. The infrastructure that drove the development of the city was once large permanent networks of roads, plumbing and park spaces but are now nomadic digital networks, orbiting GPS satellites and cloud computing connections.
Revolutionary communities are coalescing around social networks and text messages and occupy the city with the force to topple governments. The U.S. military’s has development autonomous aerial drones that they can be launched across a place like Egypt, when the government cut off internet access to prevent people from organizing protests. These drones would fly off and hover above the city, and create ad hoc connections and networks in a new form of nomadic territorial infrastructure.
Electronic Countermeasures is a project inspired by these new forms of nomadic infrastructure. The project explores the design and manufacture of a flock of interactive autonomous drones that form their own place specific, temporary, local, WIFI community- a pirate internet.
We have built a flock of GPS enabled quadcopter drones from components that were originally intended for aerial reconnaissance and police surveillance to create this flying pirate file sharing network. The drones are autonomous and drift above the public spaces of the city as a balletic interactive aerial choreography. Part nomadic infrastructure and part robotic swarm we have rebuilt and programmed the drones to broadcast their own local wifi network as a form of aerial Napster. They swarm into formation, broadcasting their pirate network, and then disperse, escaping detection, only to reform elsewhere.
The public can upload files, photos and share data with one another as the drones float above the significant public spaces of the city. The swarm becomes a pirate broadcast network, a mobile infrastructure that passers-by can interact with. It is a site specific file sharing hub, a temporary, emergent online community where content and information is exchanged across the drone network. When on location, a visitor can log onto the drone network with their phones and laptops. When the audience interacts with the drones they glow with vibrant colours, they break formation, they are called over and their flight pattern becomes more dramatic and expressive. Impromptu augmented communities form around the glowing flock. Their aerial dance and dynamic glowing formations give visual expression to the digital communities of the city.

Toledo, Spain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded 7th century
Toledo (Latin: Toletum) is a municipality located in central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid. It is the capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Moorish cultures. Many famous people and artists were born or lived in Toledo, including Al-Zarqali, Garcilaso de la Vega, Alfonso X and El Greco. It was also the place of important historic events such as the Visigothic Councils of Toledo. As of 2007, the city has a population of 78,618 and an area of 232.1 km² (89.59 square miles).
Toledo once served as the capital city of Visigothic Spain, beginning with Liuvigild (Leovigild), and was the capital until the Moors conquered Iberia in the 8th century. Under the Caliphate of Cordoba, Toledo enjoyed a golden age. This extensive period is known as La Convivencia, i.e. the co-existence of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Under Arab rule, Toledo was called Tulaytulah (Arabic طليطلة, academically transliterated Ṭulayṭulah).
On May 25, 1085 Alfonso VI of Castile took Toledo and established direct personal control over the Moorish city from which he had been exacting tribute, and ending the mediaeval Taifa's Kingdom of Toledo . This was the first concrete step taken by the combined kingdom of Leon-Castile in the Reconquista by Christian forces.
Toledo was famed for its production of iron and especially of swords and the city is still a center for the manufacture of knives and other steel implements. When Philip II moved the royal court from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, the old city went into a slow decline from which it never recovered.
Toledo's Alcázar became renowned in the 19th and 20th centuries as a military academy. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 its garrison was famously besieged by Republican forces.
Arts and culture
Toledo reached its zenith in the era of Islamic Caliphate. Historian P. de Gayangos writes:
The Muslim scientists of this age were not rivaled in the world. Perhaps among their greatest feats were the famous waterlocks of Toledo.[1]
The old city is located on a mountaintop with a 150 degrees view, surrounded on three sides by a bend in the Tagus River, and contains many historical sites, including the Alcázar, the cathedral (the primate church of Spain), and the Zocodover, a central market place.
From the 4th century to the 16th century about thirty synods were held at Toledo. The earliest, directed against Priscillian, assembled in 400. At the synod of 589 the Visigothic King Reccared declared his conversion from Arianism; the synod of 633 decreed uniformity of liturgy throughout the Visigothic kingdom and took stringent measures against baptized Jews who had relapsed into their former faith. The council of 681 assured to the archbishop of Toledo the primacy of Spain.
As nearly one hundred early canons of Toledo found a place in the Decretum Gratiani, they exerted an important influence on the development of ecclesiastical law. The synod of 1565–1566 concerned itself with the execution of the decrees of the Council of Trent; and the last council held at Toledo, 1582–1583, was guided in detail by Philip II.
Toledo was famed for religious tolerance and had large communities of Muslims and Jews until they were expelled from Spain in 1492 (Jews) and 1502 (Muslims). Today's city contains the religious monuments the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the Synagogue of El Transito, Mosque of Cristo de la Luz and the church of San Sebastián dating from before the expulsion, still maintained in good condition. Among Ladino-speaking Sephardi Jews, in their various diasporas, the family name Toledano is still prevalent - indicating an ancestry traced back to this city (the name is also attested among non-Jews in various Spanish-speaking countries).
In the 13th century, Toledo was a major cultural center under the guidance of Alfonso X, called "El Sabio" ("the Wise") for his love of learning. The program of translations, begun under Archbishop Raymond of Toledo, continued to bring vast stores of knowledge to Europe by rendering great academic and philosophical works in Arabic into Latin. The Palacio de Galiana, built in the Mudéjar style, is one of the monuments that remain from that period.
The Cathedral of Toledo (Catedral de Toledo) was built between 1226-1493 and modeled after the Bourges Cathedral, though it
